This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

WotC's entire back catalog to be released electronically starting 2013.

That's good news. I wonder if they will sell them through Paizo again? And, if so, will my previous purchases will be available for download again?

That's a good move. Fascinating how much not being assholes can accomplish.

I wonder if this is a sign of financial desperation. "We pulled all the pdfs before because they were being pirated. But we're willing to go back to that situation just so we can get some revenue."

Did enworld update?  All I see now is 'electronic copy', not PDF.

I find it hard to believe it will not be attached to a subscription model. The Sub model generates too much revenue to not have Almost every product drives sales to it.

A company creating a new revenue stream by making its older IP available for purchase is a sign of financial desperation? That would make Disney and other film studios hella desperate. Not to mention GOG.COM and, uh, just about every single book publisher that doesn't specialise on current bestsellers. So I don't buy it.

Non sequitur here. He's not opining whether Disney may or may not have been desperate. He's saying that WotC may be. It's a function of their financial and emotional state, which we are not privy to, and is unrelated to Disney. It's speculation, but a reasonable one.

Aspie goggles off.

If anything, I would say it's less of a "but we really need money BAD" but, like with the reprints, "let's try to foster some goodwill among lapsed players!"

I think you mean "lapsed buyers" as many of the people older material targets are playing RPGs, just not what they are currently publishing (the current edition of D&D).

That's exactly what I meant, yeah. I was including myself in the "lapsed buyer" category as I occasionally have the desire to revisit AD&D2e, but I certainly haven't left gaming behind...just WotC.

a no-subscription-required re-release is crucial to this gamer's goodwill.

also of note from the gen con keynote--the 5e release will be 2014?  yawn, remaining interest lost.

Personally, I see zero chance of a non-subscription release.  That, I think, is exactly why they are not saying 'PDF'.  They want to launch some kind of an app/portal, I'd imagine.  Sign in and use what you bought, one user at a time, valid contact info maintained so they can advertise new products to you...

The Apple model, basically.  FWIW, Windows 8 is going that same direction as well.  Blizzard did it with StarCraft II and Diablo III.  The tech world is coming to accept 'always online', and I'll be mildly surprised if WoTC doesn't.

I fear you're right.  Video game consoles are moving in the same direction.  Companies are really looking for ways to sell as many copies as possible by eliminated the used market.  Everything will be digitally licensed.
D&D is not an "everyone gets a ribbon" game.  If you\'re stupid, your PC will die.  If you\'re an asshole, your PC will die (probably from the other PCs).  If you\'re unlucky, your PC may die.  Point?  PC\'s die.  Get over it and roll up a new one.

The video starts at the 8 minute mark, and the electronic release of everything is talked about starting around minute 38.

If thats the case they will lose a ton of sales. For tabletop rpg products, I want to own what I purchase to view offline, or print in whole or in part whatever I need. PDF gives this flexibility.

So you have absolute certainty it will be one way, and mild surprise if it isn't? Well, I think that covers the range of speculation nicely :)
