[LoO] What kind of stuff would you want to see happening on Modern Earth?

In the Lords of Olympus game, it assumes that the gods have the ability to travel to numerous worlds, some are like ancient versions of our own earth.  The one labelled "Modern Earth" basically IS our earth.

If you were starting a campaign there, or if you were going to have Modern Earth feature prominently in your game, what kind of things would you imagine the greek gods being up to on our world?
How would the greek gods behave in our modern world in your game?

I could see Ares becoming an indiscriminate illegal weapons dealer in wartorn African regions, selling to everyone at a low price because it's just so hard to get a decent war running these days.

Apollo would either fund major  ("cure cancer"-scope) medical research projects from the background, or feel totally offended by how mortals are trying to upstage him and invent a new strain of chickenAIDSebola to knock them down a peg.

Since being the god of the Underworld also meant owning everything subterranean, Hades might take an interest in oil drilling, blood diamonds, and if he's feeling really high-tech, all those super-rare minerals that are needed for microchips and the like.

Poseidon would find out about the Great Pacific Garbage Patch and probably become the infuriated ecoterrorist from hell.

Dionysus - synthetic designer drugs, 'nuff said.

They'd all be pissed off by the Roman copycats stealing their thunder and having the planets named after them.
Obvious troll is obvious. RIP, Bill.

RPGPundit

Those are all interesting perspectives.  I do imagine that Ares would have a field day on modern Earth, while Athena would probably be much less impressed with our style of warfare.

I've mentioned some of the NPCs' potential activities in Modern Earth, but there's quite a few I left off.

I could see Hera being a big player in some kind of Republican Family Values "Real Women" sort of CPAC.

I imagine that earth would be a type of large scale game, where the gods would be attempting to pursue goals that would increase their 'score' in the game.  Going to give some serious thought to this as I am considering using something similar for a campaign once I get through reading the rules.

That's one of the things I'd envision as a typical LoO campaign theme: when you want to focus on "Olympian Gods in our Modern World".

I'm not sure. I think the whole concept of information warfare, command & control, battlespace intelligence and the like would appeal to her strategic sensibilities, while Ares would be more the Hoo-ah! Let's shoot some enemies! kind of guy.

You have a point, sort of. I just think Athena would not be impressed at the lack of nobility in modern warfare.  She'd have loved WWI dogfighters, for example, but the idea of war where you press a button and blow up a million people is not appealing to her, I would think.

Whereas Ares doesn't like a fair fight, he just likes carnage.  He'd have been all over the My Lai massacre.

Yeah, I can definitely see Poseidon causing trouble. Maybe the increase in the number and scope of environmental disasters in the seas and rivers can be correlated with the increase of earthquakes and hurricanes. Ice caps melting? Climate change? Maybe it's Poseidon working up some big ass-kicking mojo.

It could make for an interesting game plot. How can the PCs protect humanity on modern earth? Taking on international corporate conglomerates with divine backing could be just as challenging as heading up against Poseidon himself.

I can see Aphrodite and Eros on autopilot when it comes to the affairs of modern earth. With the internet and computerized match-making formulas, most of their work is done for them. Nowadays, they most likely mess only with celebrities to amuse themselves.

RPGPundit

Aphrodite would probably disguise herself as a mortal celebrity; its the kind of worship she digs.

Are we talking about Kim Kardashian famous a la "Oops, my sex tape went public and now everyone wants to know my business" or something more professional like an award winning actress?

I'd say that depends on what version of Aphrodite you want to portray.

Reading through the rules it strikes me that doing mutants with this kind of system would be fairly easy.  Say your Gods are wandering and poke their head into a random world or somebody stashes something important on a world similar to the Marvel universe.  Lots of the powers could easily be grouped into power sets for various mutants.  Did anybody else notice this?

LOL how about this set up.  One of the elder gods calls your characters into his presence.  "There is a 'god' calling himself Thor that is diverting too much attention away from our efforts at revitalizing belief in Zeus in world m616.  Go and teach him a lesson that he will not soon forget!"

That's intriguing, but are you thinking of specific examples?

That would be funny.  Of course, according to the way the rules work, that (marvel) Thor would be very powerful in his world (m616), and probably more or less so on nearby worlds (the other "M" universes and maybe the nearby "DC" ones too), but away from those would lose almost all of his powers.
