This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

[Valiant Universe: The Roleplaying Game] What's the system like?

I'm only passingly familiar with the comics but I'm always on the lookout for new supers RPGs in the vain, vain hope that the next will be The One.

Anyone got this? Read it? Played it, even? What's it like?

David Johansen

I read the original Valiant comics but the revival with Solar fighting Babylonian gods put me off so badly that I haven't looked at them since.

That was the Dark Horse version, not Valiant. Valiant no longer owns the rights to Solar or the other Gold Key characters. They did a stint at Dark Horse, and are now with Dynamite.

I'm planning to do a review soon, but at first glance it seems to be based on the "Cosmic Patrol" system.

Not familiar with it, just Googled it up and gave the Cosmic Patrol quick-start a brief look. Reads vaguely storygame-ish at a glance.

Bill

I like Magnus Robot Fighter.  Is he from Valiant?

Always interested in a new supers game. Its a difficult genre to slap game mechanics onto.

He was part of the old Valiant. Like Solar, he's published by Dynamite currently, after a short stint at Dark Horse

I've read somewhere people take turns as GM with that system?

Nexus

Its seems like most newer supers systems are more story game in design*.

*Assuming I have the definition right.

Yeah, Valiant Universe is a story game where every player has a turn as GM.  I.e., there is no GM.

I'd say maybe 50-50 myself.

These days, anyway.

Yeah, I meant recently, like the last few years. Maybe I'm just bitter since I like supers game and I'm not a huge fun of narrative games (with some exceptions).

It's probably a matter of the design space being crowded, and there not being that many superhero RPG authors or fans compared to other types. You're not going to do a heavy, effects-driven system that will catch on as well as Hero or M&M, so you've got to go elsewhere; and superheroes are typically a bit handwavey about things anyway, so that's a logical place to go.

You guys are just in a really small niche.

I have DC Heroes / Blood of Heroes, Mutants & Masterminds Third Edition, BASH!, and ICONS.  I'm good for super-heroic role-playing.  I've heard good things about Bulletproof Blues, but I wasn't too crazy about the idea of their Kickstarting a second edition one year after they published their first edition, heh.
