This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

So i tried to not only find, but dl the preview for this Mars rpg. Took me long enough to get there since typing Mars in the search engine brings up a gazillion entries. Once I remembered who makes it I went to their portion and tried to dl the preview. Instead of actually getting it straight from the 'free preview' link I find i have to join the fucking site and piss about with all that shit?

No preview, no interest. Find another way. This shit has pissed me off, what a badly made site (it's so ugly and amateurish). What's wrong with companies selling from their own doorsteps so to speak, instead of all these awful pdf sites. To think I only wanted to see what it was like.

For all my efforts, I've actually never ONCE gotten a free preview pdf from them.

Gave up a year or so ago. If a company can't put together their own website to offer a free preview on, they're not trying hard enough to get my dollars.

They are working on a totally new website that is supposed be much better and merge RPGnow and Drivethru.

I wouldn't get your hopes up.

my hopes are lower than hermes conran at the Limbolympics.

Isn't "MARS" the one the G M Skarka is doing?  I forget where his company website is (search for "GMSkarka MARS", etc), but if you email him directly he'll probably make the preview available from his own website, and not just RPGNow.

If he says, "fuck that" or whatever, then yeah I can see a beef.  But you might want to tell him, he might not realize how much crap people have to go through to try to DL the preview...

It's even worse on another site (Lulu, I think).  Not only do you have to register to view a free preview, but registration requires you put in a credit card number.

Fuck that shit!

How strange.  I've never had a problem obtaining a free download (or purchases, for that matter).  Takes about a minute...if I have a slow connection.  I do it all the time.

If I'm not sure who the publisher is, I'd just do a general Google search, which has normally netted me a publisher name.

Not too surprising they'd want you to sign onto the site before getting free downloads.  Are there any online stores that don't?

Yep.  Google search, click, download.  I think it took about 3 minutes when I first heard of MARS to be looking at the preview.

I'm not registering on a site i don't want to ever use. If companies cannot make their preview and promo material readily available without this nonsense then they can draw an income elsewhere. NE Ways I emailed Adamant, so I'm sure i will get a polite reply in short order :D

I can see what sign is saying...if it's a free preview, why not just include it on your site?

Maybe bandwidth is an issue. I dunno. GMS will, naturally, be able to clarify.

Whatever, I already had an account, so downloading the preview was easy. And I do like what I saw (even if secretly in my heart of hearts I was hoping for something like the Mars treatment in League of Extraordinary Gentleman Vol II...that is to say, some bizarre amalgamation of many literary sources...).

Sadly, I still can't get my head round actually using the system, but might still get hold of the full version and apply some hackery to it. I've become quite the bon vivant when it comes to converting stats to something akin to BRP. It really is a very nearly enjoyable process.

Alternatively, I CAN cope (just about, experience points awards aside) with Conan OGL (although I think you have to fudge the armour values, or it's all a little odd), so it might be simpler with that...

No, there isn't.   It is only available from our webstore, which is run by
RPGNow.

That's what the mailman sent. So in summary the only way to view this preview is throug the rpgnow machinery.

I can't be arsed. sorry.

I download free stuff from rpgnow - takes less than a minute if you're already registered.  Unfortunately, they use the same setup for free stuff as other stuff instead of a simple link so it's not as easy as it should be - hopefully they change that or add a free downloads page.

Hmm. That's a shame. I would have made a preview available in as many ways as possible. Maybe there's some kind of contractual obligation prohibiting that. If not...that's a shame.
