This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Players who never learn the rules?

Poor math skills annoy me far more than lack of rules knowledge.
Yeah, but who gives a fuck? You? Jibba?

Well congrats. No one else gives a shit, so your arguments are a waste of breath.

math distracting from roleplaying annoys me far more than players who don't learn the rules.

Quote from: Blackhand;597680If you ever say "the rules don't matter" don't fucking expect your players to give a shit about them.  Let alone anything you say about them when using them in an argument.

I don't expect them to give a shit about them. I expect them to remember (not care about, but remember) "roll the d20" like I've told them 100 times in a row by the 101st time it comes up. My cat is capable of this level of learning. I don't think it's a terribly high standard to hold an adult human being to.

QuoteWhy should they learn them if they are not enforced, bent or broken every time they are referenced?

The Middle just called me to complain about how you've been excluding it.

Me too, if only because players who don't learn roleplaying aren't going to be around long enough to be a major annoyance.

This.

Despite my nostalgia for games like rolemaster,

I prefer rules lite systems for this reason.

The two main things that ruin immerssion for me are intrusive rules, and horrid metagame mechanics.

Benoist

Well to be fair to Rolemaster, once you have the characters nailed down and that you have the right bookmarks at the right places in Arms Law, it's a breathe to run the thing, honestly.

Its a wee bit addition heavy :)

Worth it for the critical hits I think.

RPGPundit

I've never run into a player who "doesn't learn roleplaying".  Obviously, a few who take a bit more time than others to figure out the nuances of roleplaying etiquette and things like that, yes.

Agreed.

Sandepande

I put our group through new rules every year or two, and the mechanics tend to vary so much that they have no real hope of keeping up.

So, I simply say "roll high" or "roll low" and eventually they get the hang of it, but I don't bother them with the rules that much.

There's this guy in my group, six months into my Exalted campaign, he keeps asking what size die we use for the game.

After being in the game for several months.  He even asks when there are piles of D10s in front of the other players.

And he runs a VTM campaign.

I find this hard to believe.
