Quote from: RPGPundit;358812Yeah, Everway pretty much got screwed by a perfect storm of unfortunate circumstances. Had it been released earlier or later, it would probably have been a very succesful game with a larger following than it now has.
Oh, I don't know.  I have it, and I love it, but it's really not that accessible in its basic format. In fact -- and I know you're not going to appreciate this comparison -- I rather liken it to Nobilis.  It's big, and pretty, and ambitious, very much the author's artistic vision of a game...and no one can figure out what the hell to do with it.

Collectible cards?  No thanks.

I'll take my RPG/Boardgame/Card Game experiments using the "Living" model of FFG thanks.

And Yes, if it wasn't collectible, I would have probably bought this.

I'll look into this as well. From listening to the D&D Experience podcasts it didn't seem like the booster packs were mandatory to play, just another way to dole out mutations. You could just as easily use a list or write on index cards. Though it makes me wonder why they're using random card packs then, except for the novelty / gotta have 'em all feature. A tad odd that it has a different progression than D&D 4E but then Gamma World or before that MA was never straight up D&D.

And yes, I didn't like the Changeling 1st edition power cards. It didn't help with those that they were in the "widescreen" card size format either (and before they became popular), so not only were they random but they were oversized. Still liked the game though.

If the presentation is good, if nothing else this could be a nice box for Mutant Future. :P

Magic: The Gathering would be my guess. Easier and cheaper for them to use Magic's format than a set of non-randomized cards.

Quote from: jgants;358575I'm just going to point out that WotC already put out the first RPG with a collectible card component back in 1995, Everway.

And coming at DnD's lowest point, and the height of the collectible card craze, this feature helped lift Everway to incredible heights of popularity!

Or something.

Well, the failure of Everway had many many many reasons, and I don't think the collectible cards were even a major factor.

Game stores hated the game:
  • they were forced to buy the game - WotC had tied the allocation of the then-recent MTG expansion to a shop's Everway order numbers
  • Everway was the most expensive RPG to that date
  • the Everway box was so big that it didn't fit the usual store fixtures
  • the cover layout screamed "pretentious esoteric touchy-feely emo-ethno game" instead of "plain fantasy (dungeon) adventure"
In many game stores Everway went right to the discount bin!

I believe that a true Domin(ar)ia RPG would have met a completely different reception even if was based on collectible cards.
Swords & Wizardry & Manga ... oh my.
(Beware. This is a Kickstarter link.)

In fact, I clearly recall many cross-over RPG/CCG players practically frothing at the mouth for a Magic: the Gathering RPG that would, perhaps, utilise the cards they'd been buying.

Honestly, the thought of that makes me want to bore a hole in my head. I am perhaps a little on the biased side though. As when MtG is brought up all I can think of is the the "magic kids" (Who werent all kids, age wise, but it still applied) as we called them at my friends old FLGS. I had no use for most of them. But thats just me. (and what the fuck do I know:idunno:)

By the time that CCGs became big, I had already come to the personal realization that I'm predispositioned to hoard and collect.  I was already collecting RPGs, dice, and miniatures in the sphere of my hobby.  However, outside of the RPG hobby, I was also hoarding and collecting other items like pens and pencils, stationary, bandannas, backpacks, knives, swords, etc.

So when M:tG hit it big and all my friends were playing it, and other card games, I made the conscious decision not to get involved because I know myself and if I started playing then I would start collecting.  Seeing how WotC set up M:tG I knew that it was a losing battle and would suck my soul and wallet dry.  Also, I was working at my local community college bookstore and sold the old ladies running the shop that they should sell these card games, namely M:tG.  Luckily, they listened to me and they started selling them.  It was like crack cocaine at the college.  I saw how much money people were dropping on the game.  I was fairly poor at the time and knew my limitations, so I chose to stay away from CCGs.  It was, and has been, one of the better decisions of my life.

GW was my gateway RPG and will always hold the #1 nostalgic spot in my RPG heart.  However, I may just have to pass on this new edition of GW because of the collectible card component of it.

Woo-hoo!  Go, man!

Oh, wait.  You didn't mean that in a positive way. :o

I think I played one whole hand of M:tG in my life. It was ok, not stunning. Now Mechwarrior, on the other hand... played the hell out of that with my friends. :) Of course, that wasn't until after it had died down and you could get tons of cards on eBay cheap.

The one thing I don't like about this new version is for a boxed standalone game...

IT COMES WITH NO DICE!?!

WTF? ("oh we assume you already have dice" or somesuch from the podcasts)

A set of cheapass dice would not set them back and the ones in their earlier boxed sets weren't great, but were usable.

I'm rather surprised there's no Gamma World themed dice set for sale separately. That would be sell more readily to grogs than power card boosters. ;)
