I don't really know what to make of any of this.  I know that in other days, I'd have been frothing at the mouth at the thought of the game being based on collectible cards. Now, its like... I've learned to expect anything from WoTC. You just have to shrug and say "Forget it, Jake... its Wizards.."

I still want to have good expectations, but its just so damn hard...

Quote from: ggroy;358244For younger players, TSR is ancient history and WotC 3E/3.5E D&D is "old school" to them.  Even younger players have probably never even heard of TSR.

I don't understand why you would eye roll there.  That's exactly my bloody point.

That younger generation has never heard of GW, so this is going to be their first exposure to it, and this is what they're going to think of, for good or ill, when you say "Gamma World" to them now.

Before it might just be some old game they've never heard of.  Now it's some bullshit thing with collectible cards and MMO button powers and shit.

It's this kind of clashing of expectations, of what is basically becoming two separate hobbies at the hands of WotC, that I'm so fucking annoyed with.  I started playing RPGs to play RPGs, not fucking boardgames and CCGs.

Maybe a factual approach rather than a sensationalist one would help. For example, a close look at the photo reveals character sheets in front of the participants and reports of the Q&A from D&D Experience indicate that the game doesn't require anything save what comes in the box.

In the past I would have said it's a little disingenuous to work to find something to froth at the mouth and then complain about frothing at the mouth, but these days I just shrug and say, "Forget it, John...It's Pundy."

Quote from: TAFMSV;358380Is this really the same as WW putting out tons of crappy splats?

I guess not exactly like it, then, but your idea of taking 3/4th of the content and leaving it for supplements (whether as cards, books, whatever) sure brings back memories of Exalted for me.  Hell, even their WoD lines had/have a lot of "these people are really, really, really important, but we're not going to put anything about them in the core other than this blurb telling you about how essential they are to your game.  Please see X supplement, which will be coming out soon!"  I wish I could say that WW only released splats that expanded a game rather than filling in holes, but that really doesn't seem to be the case.  Only their limited lines seem to be very complete from the get-go, but that's because they have to cram everything within a limited pagecount.

So no, nothing like getting random cards, but yes, exactly like holding out on some of the meat while telling consumers you're getting "core" or "complete" material.  I don't think Exalted, with its corebook lacking rules for constructing the only antagonists that can really challenge the PCs, is a "complete" game.
"In a way, the Lands of Dream are far more brutal than the worlds of most mainstream games. All of the games set there have a bittersweetness that I find much harder to take than the ridiculous adolescent posturing of so-called \'grittily realistic\' games. So maybe one reason I like them as a setting is because they are far more like the real world: colourful, crazy, full of strange creatures and people, eternal and yet changing, deeply beautiful and sometimes profoundly bitter."

I'm just going to point out that WotC already put out the first RPG with a collectible card component back in 1995, Everway.

And coming at DnD's lowest point, and the height of the collectible card craze, this feature helped lift Everway to incredible heights of popularity!

Or something.

That looks very interesting. Looks like they have three products planned from October to September.

Quote from: Bradford C. Walker;358418WOTC will likely try to shoehorn other IP it owns into the D&D4 framework if Gamma World succeeds, and with each offering they proclaim "There is no real difference between (X) and D&D for RPG purposes, so you might as well play a reskinned D&D."  They don't have to succeed often to once again get a stranglehold on the product category, and with the new boardgames that will be released this year they clearly argue that D&D really is a boardgame with infinite content expandability- and these games are a new variety of acquisition products.

Good observation.  And for some genres, I think the 4e rules will reskin excellently - especially GW.

I am very interested to see what the D&D boardgames will be like and how much impact they have on the boardgame scene.

Jim Ward made a deal last summer for the D&D4e version of Metamorphosis Alpha.

Naturally, that appears to be the final announcement from Signal Fire Studios. Does anybody here know the rest of the story?

I doubt WotC will ever do MA, since Ward apparently owns it.

Much obliged.

I'm fairly confident that MA won't be a spoof with collectible cards.  Also, it might beat Gamma World to market!

Yeah, Everway pretty much got screwed by a perfect storm of unfortunate circumstances. Had it been released earlier or later, it would probably have been a very succesful game with a larger following than it now has.
