This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Quote from: CRKrueger;974175Hackmaster 4th had to be a parody, it was a WotC contract requirement to use the AD&D license.
Hackmaster 5th doesn't have that issue.

hackmaster 5th also chose not to be OSR.

Quote from: John Scott;973739What makes [DCC] stand out in your opinion compared to similar games like Hackmaster or OSR

DCC is consciously trying to recapture that "OMG I HAVE NEVER SEEN ANYTHING LIKE THIS GAME BEFORE" feeling so many people had when they first encountered D&D.  The weird dice, the bizarre monsters, the quirky, overly-specific spells, crawling around in a nonsensical 10x10'-quantized dungeon etc.  Except these days the standard set of Dragon Dice, owlbears, Mordenkainen's Magnificent Whatever, dungeon crawling and so on are worn-out fantasy tropes, so to get that feeling you have to introduce a bunch of new tropes.  It's not so much about gonzo as it is novelty, but familiar novelty, if that makes sense.  It's why DCC uses bizarre non-regular polyhedral dice instead of cards or spinners or runes or something.
D&D is becoming Self-Referential.  It is no longer Setting Referential, where it takes references outside of itself. It is becoming like Ouroboros in its self-gleaning for tropes, no longer attached, let alone needing outside context.

It's divergent, sure, but it's still recognizable as a D&D.  DCC is pretty damn divergent too system-wise.
Even the the "cutting edge" storygamers for all their talk of narrative, plot, and drama are fucking obsessed with the god damned rules they use. - Estar

Yes, Sean Connery\'s thumb does indeed do megadamage. - Spinachcat

Isuldur is a badass because he stopped Sauron with a broken sword, but Iluvatar is the badass because he stopped Sauron with a hobbit. -Malleus Arianorum

"Tangency Edition" D&D would have no classes or races, but 17 genders to choose from. -TristramEvans

Quote from: RPGPundit;974075Well, DCC IS an OSR game. But I assume you meant "early-edition D&D and clones" there?

I think the central thing DCC does that makes it stand out is that it takes the quirky parts of D&D, and runs with it. Not in a goofy kind of slightly smug joke of "isn't old school D&D kind of ridiculous" like Hackmaster did, but in a way that says "let's get all-in with the weird".

Mind you, I don't think it ever got TRULY all-in until I came up with my own DCC Last Sun setting, which in turn takes those rules and says "let's go all-in with a setting where these rules become logical".

I was looking for a D&D back to the roots kind of game to play with friends (there are to many), sounds like I have to give DCC a chance. To create a setting where the rules of a "D&D game" make sense within the setting is a really cool idea.

Does the self-destructive nature of the magic in DCC have an analogue in the 'source' games?
I don't recall AD&D 1e magic causing corruption from cantrips!

No, that's the Sword & Sorcery Appendix N material's influence.

I love DCC in part for the reason you state here.

As far as my setting, I'll be revealing it in small doses in my upcoming "Pundit Presents" series of products.
