Games I thought I’d hate…

Quote from: RPGPundit;972946I was expecting DCC to be too gimmicky to be good, but I was (obviously) blown away by how awesome it actually is.

I've only recently bought it (and Hubris)... So, I've not had a chance to read it too thoroughly. But I really like the flavor and think the characters are a nice take on OSR. I was initially put off by having to buy a whole new set of funky dice, but seeing how they work is quite brilliant. I also like the fact that magic is unpredictable. I'm really looking forward to MCC!

Gumshoe, specifically Night's Black Agents. When I first heard about a system in which you either don't make skill checks, or you need to spend points to be good at them... let's just say that it was far enough outside my expectations that I didn't think it would make a worthwhile play experience.

But it did.
The Secret Volcano Base: my intermittently updated RPG blog.

Running: Pathfinder Scarred Lands, Mutants & Masterminds, Masks, Starfinder, Bulldogs!
Playing: Sigh. Nothing.
Planning: Some Cyberpunk thing, system TBD.

How could anyone think he'd hate Gangbusters?  I regret losing the boxed set.

Well, I think I was about 10 when we first started playing it. At that point, the most I knew about the gangs of the '20s was Bugs Bunny's caricature portrayals of Edward G. Robinson in Looney Tunes shorts. That was back when we were so enamored with TSR we'd pick up any box set we could find locally. Top Secret, Boot Hill, Gamma World, Marvel Super Heroes, whatever.

Ha ha, TSR did seem to have it locked down but somehow I was always more interested in FGU games.

I can relate. I was around the same age at the time, and I just had no real connection to the subject matter yet. I probably would have played it if someone ran it, but I didn't have the least bit of interest in picking it up. I was young and stupid.

Wouldn't that make you want to play Gangbusters? That cartoon was why I instantly fell under the spell of gangster and film noir movies as a teen.

Pendragon. I took a brief look at the rulebook and turned away in horror from the dreary depiction of realistic medieval politics and the fiddly, barely coherent rule system - this was nowhere close to what I wanted from a King Arthur game! Then I actually got to play it, and all sorts of things clicked for me. Both the rules and the setting work a lot better in practice than in theory.

In my defense, part of the problem was that I was reading the fifth edition core, which for some reason uses the King Uther period (which is deliberately un-shiny) as its default.
Add me to the ranks of people who have stopped posting here because they can\'t stand the RPGPundit. It\'s not even his actual opinions, though I strongly disagree with just about all of them. It\'s the psychotic frothing rage with which he holds them. If he ever goes postal and beats someone to death with a dice bag, I don\'t want to be listed among his known associates, is what I\'m saying.

You play DCC. What makes it stand out in your opinion compared to similar games like Hackmaster or OSR, is it the system, the modules, the gonzo stuff, the 70's nostalgia? I am curious.

Well, DCC IS an OSR game. But I assume you meant "early-edition D&D and clones" there?

I think the central thing DCC does that makes it stand out is that it takes the quirky parts of D&D, and runs with it. Not in a goofy kind of slightly smug joke of "isn't old school D&D kind of ridiculous" like Hackmaster did, but in a way that says "let's get all-in with the weird".

Mind you, I don't think it ever got TRULY all-in until I came up with my own DCC Last Sun setting, which in turn takes those rules and says "let's go all-in with a setting where these rules become logical".

Hackmaster 4th had to be a parody, it was a WotC contract requirement to use the AD&D license.
Hackmaster 5th doesn't have that issue.
