This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Game Settings that Have Never Had Their One True System

  • Talislanta. I'm thinking Savage Worlds or maybe RuneQuest/BRP for this one.

I'd have to disagree since having its own system that has held up this long is kinda of the definition of "one true system", sure its streamlined and elegant, dropped classes and levels, but still fundamentally the same system through most of its life. (The attempt at d20 not withstanding)

What about D&D? 4E clearly is not the same creature as OD&D or 1st Ed, does that mean it doesn't have the right system for it now/never has? (I loved Cyclopedia D&D/Basic+ but that's me.)

Most licensed games run into the problem for a few reasons--track history, and license holders limited understanding of the game field. (Hence why you get d20 things that really didn't serve either side of the equation.)

I'd ad Providence to the list, I love Providence, but I don't think its system worked. They designed it aiming to make something like GURPS in the long wring (or World of Darkness) but it was the only game ever produced, and had materials the version produced didn't need (Certain skills.)

It needed something better at superheroes. (Especially since the game has one "big" stat problem with Dexterity being the primary combat stat, and super dex being way way too cheap.)

I also think AD&D was all wrong for Ravenloft... I think something like WFRP is a better fit.

I think you are probably right. Then again, I think I would have ditched Ravenloft as a "Demiplane of dread", and just made it a world that fricken dark and kept the key non-other game world NPC's (Adam, their version of Doctor Moreau, Van Richten, Strahd.)

WFRP and the original Ravenloft model's settings/technology assumptions line up a bit more appropriately. (As well as social and political structures)

A good system for Alien/Aliens could be the classic "Call of Cthulhu" (or Chaosium's Basic Role-Playing). After all, "Alien" is still the best Lovecraftian movie out there

For "Supernatural" I would make an attempt with GURPS.

And, if anybody remembers it, the old "Ghostbusters" system by West End Games for "The Middleman" :D

Battlestar Galactica... Maybe an adaptation of the classic "Star Wars" system (also by WEG).

Settings looking for a good system, IMHO:

The X-Files
Doctor Who
Patrick O'Brian's novels about Jack Aubrey ("Master and Commander")
...with "Pirates of the Caribbeans" as the supplement for loony adventures...
Ghost in the Shell
Jason Bourne (the movies)
For every idiot who denounces Ayn Rand as "intellectualism" there is an excellent DM who creates a "Bioshock" adventure.

What about Clashes In Harms Way? That fits the subject matter and time period doesnt it?

Yes. You could run a Aubrey/Maturin campaign with In Harms Way - the O'Brian books was one of the sources of inspiration if I'm not mistaken. You could run a wide  range of Napoleonic maritime adventures.

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.  Arguably, one could use the old Ghostbusters RPG for a near-perfect fit, but I'm not aware of any official treatment of it.

!i!

Age of Fable

I never played it, but the Buffy game seemed very detailed, in a way that didn't fit the feel of the show.

Thank you. I didn't knew this system. I have a female player in my gaming group who is simply nuts for both O'Brien and the classic "wooden ships & iron men" period (including a big collection of art and history books). An unusual interest for a girl, but she really loves the topic. Maybe I'll give this RPG to her as a gift for Christmas...

(...Like if the schedule of what we want to play isn't already full...)

Quote from: Ronin;347158I totally agree with Bureau 13, The game was way to uber crunchy. It needs a faster, slicker system. Maybe Savage Worlds, PIGs house system or something else.

Bureau 13 has been released for D20 Modern and a Savage worlds version is under development.

A MSPE/T&T hydbrid is what I always thought would work. But I like Savage Worlds enough to pick that one up.

(Sadly the novels are better and more fun than the game by Tri Tac..., but no more of them)

I really like D20 as  fit for it. But I did not know that a Savage Worlds version was in the works. I think that will be great. Hopefully it comes out and doesnt turn to vapor ware.

You are absolutely correct! O'Brian's Aubrey/Maturin novels were definitely one of the prime inspirations. To be precise, the actual title is In Harm's Way: A Napoleonic Naval Roleplaying Game, but most people just call it In Harm's Way, even though it is just the first of five - soon to be six - in the In Harm's Way series. The games all share a military setting as well as certain common mechanics.

That gentleman is on the team to do the official B13 SW conversion.  It might be lateware, but it won't be vaporware.
