This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

David! You're getting as bad as AM!

Well, not as bad - that's a stretch for mere mortals - but you used to be such a nice young man!

Quote from: VBWyrdeThe Indie RPGs that I've heard the most about are 'Dogs in the Vineyard', 'Polaris', 'Universalis', and 'Shadows of Yesterday'.   I have yet to read through any of them yet, but have started with 'Dogs in the Vineyard'.
Then it's too late - you've already been indoctrinated :)

Seriously, those are forge games, only one side of the Indie movement (for lack of a better term), sometimes called "swine games" or "ass games" in these here parts ;) Then there are the other Indie games, sometimes referred to as Small Press -- games from people like our own Clash Bowley (In Harm's Way, Star Cluster, Blood Games), RPGPundit (Forward to Adventure; coming soon), Kyle Aaron (I think that's his latest screen name; d4-d4 rules), Charles Rice (RPGObjects_chuck; for d20 fans), a few others, and myself.

Both are indie, but the latter fall into a category between mainstream and forge indie that is not extreme enough to garner the reactionists' (on both sides) comments. Basically, I think the majority here will agree with your definition of Indie, so just don't fall into the trap of buying into all the forge indie hype (not that some aren't good games--Shadows of Yesterday is very unforge-like).

Oh yeah, welcome. :D

Thanks :)

Now I think we're getting down to brass tacks.  Might I ask what it is that makes these games "swine-ass"ish?  I'm trying to put this together and it's very helpful if people explain their views and reasoning.  What is the essential distinction between the so-called Swine-Ass Indie games and the Small Press games would you say?  Is it some philosophic difference, or game rules/system difference, or GMing style difference (such as the Player Empowerment thing), or something else altogether like business model?

Anyway, thanks guys.  Appreciate the help with this.

Rockin'!  God, I can't get used to Luke's new haircut.  Or ... no, that's not true.  I probably could get used to it, but then I'd be used to it, and I'm pretty sure that's not a person I'm comfortable being.

You know, you can actually post the pics to this thread!  There's a little button when you're writing a post called "insert image", that lets you link to another site with an image on it, so you could just put the pics up here.

Wow, looks like I'm the only one who's noticed that Pundy's being positively fiendish here. What a clever arsehole motherfucker. :D

Well, here is the definition of swine and how it relates to games according to the RPGPundit: LINK. This is just a starting point - there are many vicious threads around here touching on similar and more involved topics.

So, nice pics.  Any chance we can get names to the faces? Who is the "Goblin girl" dude? Who's the "Ogre and the fae" dude? who's "the pirate"?

Also, I take it the "luke" DMing burning empires is Luke Crane? I mean obviously, who else would be GMing Burning Empires?

Holy fuck he looks like a yokel.  Its amusing to think THIS is the guy that feels he has the right to demand personal servants, hookers, blow, or whatever the fuck else he claims he deserves as a "celebrity" of the roleplaying world.

Anyways, its unsurprising to see that the Forge Swine appear to have a pretty high volume of followers who look like mouth-breathing sociopath lawn-crappers.  Kind of a pity, though, at least the White Wolf swine had the whole Goth thing going for them, every once in a while there was even one of them that seemed worth fucking. Good luck with that over in the Cult of Ron...
