This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

"Cool people don't play RPGs" (from the Enworld thread)

That's the statement: "Cool people don't play RPGs". Agree or disagree, and discuss.

It's just plain old dismissive bullshit.

First, we'd have to agree on a definition of "cool". Then, we'd have to agree that none of us know "cool" people playing RPGs beyond the anecdotal occurence. That's already a lost-cause type of statement.

It's just a cliché.

It allows people to call each other uncool, nerds, geeks, and dismiss whatever they're talking about because "nobody cares" or it's "nerdrage". That's typical internet BS fare, to me.

I hate to trot this one out, but Vin Diesel is cooler than the person who suggested that "cool people don't game", and...well, y'know...

I'm nearly 50, and I can't imagine applying that term to anyone these days.

But back in high school I was 'cool' by the standards of the day (it involved polyester, long collars, and color patterns that make me flinch when I see the pictures now, but on the other hand, other than pregnancy, there wasn't anything penicillin or white vinegar couldn't fix), likewise in college, and I war gamed in HS and added RPGs in college.

Most of my gaming companions were, in the terminology of the day, 'with it'.

Post-school-daze, I suppose the groups remain 'cool' for the age group. My current group is guys in the late 20s and early 30s, middle class, established in their careers, married or in relationships. Home-owners, fathers, sportsmen. One guy that just left was a college-age slacker, though.

I would say that as a whole our hobby attracts a lot of socially outcast individuals, though.

First person that comes to mind is my black, rasta-wearing friend who plays reggae and funk. I daresay he's a pretty cool guy, and he plays D&D in my group.
Obvious troll is obvious. RIP, Bill.

Since I am a cool person and I play RPGs, I'd have to disagree. ;)

Well, I know I'm cool.  According to one of my students, I'm the coolest teacher at my college!

Seriously I always find this one a touch silly, since I'm sure most of us can trot out examples where it simply isn't true (and for the record, one may say I was and am not cool, but I am known as a truly awesome babe magnet, so...there! ;) ). Though my wife might disagree.

On a serious note, I do understand that gaming does attract what I think is a larger segment of misfits (geek social fallacy et al) but by and large I don't see that.

For example, here in Hungary, many RPGers are geeky according to their lights - and have plenty of girlfriends/boyfriends, husbands/wives and kids by the gross ton, so they must be a little cool. I even just met a high-up guy in the Foreign Ministry here, gamer, whose wife is also a gamer (and apparently some sort of horror on WoW, but I cannot confirm this).

P.S.- forgot to add, my university students also think I'm pretty awesome. This one's true by the way. They say I'm "cool" (or perhaps they mean "fool").

Same thing here. I have an XBOX 360 and play Halo 3. According to the Grade 4s in my wife's classroom, I'm cool.

I am not sure you are allowed to use "cool" and [Hungarian] "Foreign Ministry" in one sentence. There ought to be a rule... ;) Good points, though.

All the circular talk aside the stigma that only geeks play RPG's still holds true.  Though how much that actually matters is largely in flux.

Just in case.
