Best game magazine ever?

I miss the old days of real, paper game magazines you could read whenever, wherever, no PDF reader required..

Anyway, what was everyone's favorite game magazine?

I liked the old ones that covered more than just one companies game line, like old space gamer and challenge magazine.

All in all I'd give challenge my vote for best, despite it's high number of typos and glitches. It just had a great style and covered a lot of games, mostly in the SF genre.

Damn, I wish there was something like it now....:gloomy:

Dragon Magazine, back when thye had a section deoted to Sci-fi and Superhero RPGs.

ColonelHardisson

Dragon of the early 80s is my pick. It covered a wide range of subjects, from game articles, including non-D&D and even some non-RPG articles, to movie and book reviews.

Of course, much of what Dragon covered then can be found on the internet now. I like Dragon as it is currently, but it would be nice to have a real paper magazine that covered as much ground as the old Dragon did.

4e definitely has an Old School feel. If you disagree, cool. I won\'t throw any hyperbole out to prove the point.

White Dwarf in the mid 80's when they covered all the systems, Dave Langford did the book reviews and Thrud and The Travellers were there every month.

I would say White Dwarf in the very early days. Dave Langford's spite was always welcomed. Solid coverage on a variety of games. Interesting well thought out articles. Then it become a toy catalogue.....

My favorite remains The Space Gamer, when Steve Jackson Games published it (I wish they had a CD-ROM archive like what they did for Dragon).  Honorable mention goes to Different Worlds, The Gamer, and Arcane.

Different Worlds was my favourite after about 1983. Before that I got Dragon and White Dwarf all the time as well. Space Gamer was excellent, but I used to read my mate's.

My honourable mention goes to a UK magazine called Games and Puzzles, which I used to read in the school library, and in which I read about a new game called Dungeons and Dragons.

I go back to the early 1980s with White Dwarf.  A really great mag, back in the day.  They had some excellent MERP stuff (mainly by Graham Staplehurst), as well as Runequest, A/D&D, Traveller, etc., at their peak.  I still dig their adventures 'Trouble at Embertrees' and 'The Key of Tirandor'.

Dragon was excellent throughout the 80s, especially in the years when they were doing the Princess Ark series.

Also, honorable mention to Polyhedron magazine with its complete D20 mini-games, many of which were truly awesome.

Odd that you of all people would say that. Other than Princess Arc, the latter TSR era of the mag can be pretty low-regarded due to general Swinishness.
In order to qualify as a roleplaying game, a game design must feature:

1. A traditional player/GM relationship.
2. No set story or plot.
3. No live action aspect.
4. No win conditions.

Don't like it? Too bad.

Dragon, Different Worlds, Shadis, and older White Dwarf still get referenced by me from time to time.  Lots of good stuff to be used.
