This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Archetypal characters

Who are some of the great archetypal characters people use for character inspiration around here?

Conan is likely one, he's probably the basis for the whole barbarian class in D&D.

King Arthur was the prototype for the 'lost royalty seeking his rightful crown" archetype.

Naturally Gandalf is the wizard archetype, he was easier to understand than Merlin, for example.

I seldom base characters directly on any other character, but always liked Avon from Blake's 7.
RPGPundit is a fucking fascist asshole and a hypocritial megadouche.

SunBoy

I haven't used them much, personally, but clearly Aragorn and Robin Hood are good examples of that, too. Well, actually any LOTR character is now an archetype...

I see a lot of people making Snake Pliskens from Escape from New York.  The constantly pissed off loner with guns and attitude.

In western games a lot of folks try to make the Man With No Name types that Eastwood made famous.  That or the party betrayer Tuco character from The Good, The Bad and the Ugly.
Truly Rural dot com my own little hole on the web.

RPG Haven choice.

This describes so many "gritty anti-heroes" in comics...

Batman: constantly pissed off loner with gadgets and attitude.
Wolverine: constantly pissed off loner with claws and attitude.
etc.

Having played a bunch of D20 Modern (and quiet enjoyed it!), the heros and villains of Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex and 2nd Gig seem like they'd be perfect people to model.
God in the Machine.

Here's my website. It's defunct, but there's gaming stuff on it. Much of it's missing. Sorry.

I've got a blog. Do you read other people's blogs? I dunno. You can say hi if you want, though, I don't mind company. It's not all gaming, though; you run the risk of running into my RL shit.

Inigo Montoya has become the classic duelist character for many games.

Eric Draven from The Crow. He's so cool and dark. Give him twin Desert Eagles and he'd be perfect :p

I'm kidding.

Cugel the Clever for thieves and scoundrels of all sort (although the Mouser is another good choice).
Tuco, Col. Mortimer/Angel Eyes and the Man With No Name for... well... basically all campaigns. They are universal.
Now with a Zine!
