Ok, here goes!

It's a good thing you noticed the police drones, by the way. Because the answer  is this: The Rikti aren't aliens. They are earth humans. (They are actually future humans, only really mutated.)

Thats what the Lost are too- you'll start running across them in King's Row around the time you hit 4th level. The dropships and bombs aren't coming from another planet, they are coming from another dimension.

Whats your character name, by the way? I'll be on as Ocean Titan.

Damn, I'm good. :D Far too many years of roleplaying has honed my "notice the insignifigant" skills.

I made my tank as Bartleby, but I'm considering other concepts for tonight. So far I've come up with the names Monochrome, Short Circuit, Mini-Ball, or Gestalt. I want to try a couple of different ones before the trial runs out to see if its worth continuing.

I made a scrapper after midnight last night (yeah, I know) called 'Strawberry Pop'.

...Mainly because I haven't played a scrapper in a long time.

FWIW, here is my list of guys. I could be on as any or all of these:

Mutagenik (energy/rad corruptor - villian)
Velvet Rabbit (illusion/kinetics controller)
Ocean Titan (sonic/sonic defender, my current fave)
Nurse Napalm (fire/war mace tank)
Le Goblin (sonic/fire blaster- probably not keeping him)
Strawberry Pop (martial arts/super reflexes scrapper- possibly not keeping her)

Once you get to the Hollows and fight some trolls, let me know. I'm thinking about making a 'reformed troll' character, using some troll-like costumes.

Is there any way to change JUST hair color? It seems tied directly to the overall color scheme. Also, how do you (or can you) make shirts and pants different colors from each other? I ended up with black pants, black boots, black shirt, and slim pink tie (an homage to the good Doctor!) for Bartleby, but I was a bit rushed.

There is a little black (or green) jewel button at the bottom of your character when you are designing the costume. When it's green, that means your entire character only has two colors in the theme, plus skin color. I think it's green by default which means, you have a unified theme. This is good for players who have no sense of costume aesthetics.

When it's black (after you click it), you can individually set the color (or sometimes two colors) for each individual costume piece. Whether that's hair color, or whatever. Often hair color is actually two colors (a color and a highlight).

You can also individually set skin color.

So for example on Ocean Titan, he has a bone-colored narwhal horn, green-yellow beard, black tattoos, black bathing suit, blue and silver oxygen belt, and an aqua-colored combat harness.

Anyone else want an account? I can send some more out!

Cool, thanks for the info. I've now got about 15 character concepts in mind.

Okay so far:

a) All the names I like are taken! But I'm finding workarounds. :)

b) Have one of each major archetype now, but with all the sub-catagories.... oy!

c) I could spend the entire trial period just making ALTs - this game is dangerous.

All of the various character types have different playstyles, and then there are different playstyles and strategies for each power too.

So for example, the controllers, usually stand back from a battle and try and lock down their enemies with holds.. but a kinetics type controller can often be seen right up front with the scrappers and tanks. (All of the kinetics powers depend on being right up close to the enemy. )

Eventually you sort of develop a little pattern or rhythm with your attacks, and you budget where all your enhancements are going. It's pretty neat.

Question - I got all my alts to at least level 2 and into Atlas Park. I go to the Hero Registration building and start getting missions. First one goes okay. second one - tougher. Third one is invariably in a neighborhood patrolled by levels 4-6+ gangers that kick my ass. This is for ANY class/mission. Am I supposed to just run around cleaning up the streets for a couple of levels and THEN move on the missions or what?

Got caugh in a Rikit attack on Atlas Park last night - what a mess! it was like the world's biggest Rave/Disco/LAN party/WWE match, and there was NO way of keeping track of what was going on. Pretty, in a charotic WTF? way.

Have you been levelling up? (i.e. Talk to Ms. Liberty each time.)

In short: generally, you should just watch yourself when you end up at the far north or south end of the map. And I would avoid hunting except for when on a sewer team* (see below). Just do missions.

* If you see anyone in broadcasting gathering a sewer team, send that guy a tell immediately, or just start hanging around the sewer entrance. Levels 1-6 are generally perfect for Sewer teams.

On Rikti chaos: my advice is to jump right in, but also to make sure and yell "Looking for team!" a few times until someone invites you. That way, even if you don't/can't contribute much, you will be getting a nice steady stream of XP from everyone on your team. And the way Rikti invasions work is everyone is baselined to the Rikti level as soon as the invasion siren goes on. You can team with level 50 guys and be 1st level and still contribute.

Yeah, I visit Ms. Liberty when I get enough XP to level (only have two alts up to 3rd right now) but I've done the first two of 3+ legs of the mission assigned from the officers in the Registration building. Its the 3rd leg that takes you IN to those 4-6th level gangs, so I suppose I need to do some street-sweeping for a couple of levels, or join in the sewers. Lots of folks doing those last night but I held back not know what the dealio was.

I was in the Rikti attack, but not as part of a team - next time I'll be sure to ask for one. Thanks for the tip!

Two or three Sewer teams will get you to 6th-7th within a couple of hours. That's why they are so popular.

Yeah, I've been playing LotRO for months and I'm used to the idea of being able to solo and level via quests - obviously that dosn't cut it in CoH. :)

Maybe I described this wrong:
Eventually, the missions are (almost) the only thing that will reliably help you level. I'd say starting around 10th level, it's a matter of moving from 1 mission to the next, and there a re a lot of storylines to discover and get involved in.

But joining a sewer team will get you boosted up real quick.

When you hit 4th or 5th level, go to King's Row (take the train) and follow the yellow arrow to the police station to get your police scanner. Once you have that, you basicly just get missions fed to you.  Crank through 3 at a time, then hit the Safeguard mission. After you do this a couple of times you should have a fairly good sense of where missions are and how to find NPC contacts.

Ah, okay. This is just a bump as it were. Regardless, get my butt in the sewers tonight. Got it.

Now I just need to decide which character to use!
