Title: CoH trial version
Post by: signoftheserpent on July 28, 2007, 04:52:04 AM
Are there any to download? I don't have a DVD drive. I would like to try this out. I'm bored senseless of the brokenness of WoW.

Hang on. There's a promotion going on right now...

Can you pm me your email address? (and some kind of real name. I guess I could use your forum name).

I have to send it from the NCsoft website.

I can send out up to 4 10-day free trials at a time. So if anyone else would like one...please also PM/email me.

The only thing I want to warn you about is- this is a long-ass initial download from the site! (You basicly download the entire game).

Someone beat you to it, but thanks anyway. Took about 5 hours for it to download compeltely.

I now would appear to be the only Brit on Freedom as the astonishing Atomician!

tech/blaster looks like the bastard child of Acroyear and Automan.

If they like it and sign up for it, I get a free month. It's like a ponzi scheme!

Well, I'm not that focused on getting a free month or anything, I have a credit card. I'm just spreading the fun.

Are you based in the UK/Eu perchance? I love the game, but the client i got was for the US version which would be fine but i think the distance is proving problematic (i get disconnect A LOT).

I am in the US (in Baltimore, in fact). But I know there is a UK CoH community. Hang on.

Ok, http://uk.cityofheroes.com/

There is a 'refer a friend' button right there... so it looks like they have the same program.

I looked at the servers, and they are listed as 'Defiant, Union, Vigilance, and Zukunft' If you don't have these servers, you are playing on the US servers.

Here's my idea for ya: Go here-->

http://uk.cityofheroes.com/faqs/answer/how_do_i_create_a_free_trial_account/

That should do it.

Support have confirmed Im on the US servers with the US verison of the game. This only came about because i found the uk site (that you mentioned) doesn't accept my details (otherwise i'd have been none the wiser). It's not a problem except I'm continually getting disconnected and I'm suspecting it's becaue i'm logging on from a very long way away. I have noproblem otherwise.

Just go on the forums over at the UK site and register and ask someone to sponsor you. I think people will give you a code.

That's the problem, I can't register on the forums. It won't register my account details because it's an american account (and if that's not the reason then I'm shit out of ideas). Tyrying that is how I discovered this geographical disparity; I assumed there was one global version of the game with players selecting servers from a master list as appropriate.

Otherwise I would.

There must be some UK players out there who will help ya! I hope. I'll keep lookign for ideas. It's go tto be a customer service thing.

Either that or you could just buy the Good vs. Evil edition and register for real in the UK.

Okay, got it installed late last night, made a generic Tanker just to get a feel for the controls and such. It reminds me alot of the Matrix Online, at first at least, probably because of the cityscape. I'll get on when I get home this afternoon and actually put some time and thought into another character. From what I've seen - pretty neat! When I arrived at Atlas Park (right after the starting area) I popped into the middle of a huge fight against the Rikti. Needless to say, that was a bit of a surprise, and I backpeadled as fast as I could. :)

Hah, you should have jumped right in! Rikti fiends must be destroyed! Seriously, the safest possible place you could be during a Rikti invasion-wave is right up by Atlas.

Actually I know a secret or two about the Rikti.... spoilers, if you will. Since you are just starting right now you may not be able to learn this in-game before it doesn't matter anymore. Would you like to know?

I suppose - may as well, as there's no promise I'll stay past the trial period. :)

I backed off simply because it was a HUGE fight and I couldn't sort friend from foe, so I figured I'd be better off just going about my business. Next time I'll pop in. :)

And I noticed one thing about the Rikti, even in the starting area. The deactivated Rikit training droids look alot like the floating police robots. But that's probably just me.

Ok, here goes!

(spoilers, hahah)

(scroll down)

...

It's a good thing you noticed the police drones, by the way. Because the answer  is this: The Rikti aren't aliens. They are earth humans. (They are actually future humans, only really mutated.)

Thats what the Lost are too- you'll start running across them in King's Row around the time you hit 4th level. The dropships and bombs aren't coming from another planet, they are coming from another dimension.

Whats your character name, by the way? I'll be on as Ocean Titan.

Damn, I'm good. :D Far too many years of roleplaying has honed my "notice the insignifigant" skills.

I made my tank as Bartleby, but I'm considering other concepts for tonight. So far I've come up with the names Monochrome, Short Circuit, Mini-Ball, or Gestalt. I want to try a couple of different ones before the trial runs out to see if its worth continuing.

I made a scrapper after midnight last night (yeah, I know) called 'Strawberry Pop'.

...Mainly because I haven't played a scrapper in a long time.

FWIW, here is my list of guys. I could be on as any or all of these:

Mutagenik (energy/rad corruptor - villian)
Velvet Rabbit (illusion/kinetics controller)
Ocean Titan (sonic/sonic defender, my current fave)
Nurse Napalm (fire/war mace tank)
Le Goblin (sonic/fire blaster- probably not keeping him)
Strawberry Pop (martial arts/super reflexes scrapper- possibly not keeping her)

Once you get to the Hollows and fight some trolls, let me know. I'm thinking about making a 'reformed troll' character, using some troll-like costumes.

Is there any way to change JUST hair color? It seems tied directly to the overall color scheme. Also, how do you (or can you) make shirts and pants different colors from each other? I ended up with black pants, black boots, black shirt, and slim pink tie (an homage to the good Doctor!) for Bartleby, but I was a bit rushed.

There is a little black (or green) jewel button at the bottom of your character when you are designing the costume. When it's green, that means your entire character only has two colors in the theme, plus skin color. I think it's green by default which means, you have a unified theme. This is good for players who have no sense of costume aesthetics.

When it's black (after you click it), you can individually set the color (or sometimes two colors) for each individual costume piece. Whether that's hair color, or whatever. Often hair color is actually two colors (a color and a highlight).

You can also individually set skin color.

So for example on Ocean Titan, he has a bone-colored narwhal horn, green-yellow beard, black tattoos, black bathing suit, blue and silver oxygen belt, and an aqua-colored combat harness.

Anyone else want an account? I can send some more out!

Okay so far:

a) All the names I like are taken! But I'm finding workarounds. :)

b) Have one of each major archetype now, but with all the sub-catagories.... oy!

c) I could spend the entire trial period just making ALTs - this game is dangerous.

All of the various character types have different playstyles, and then there are different playstyles and strategies for each power too.

So for example, the controllers, usually stand back from a battle and try and lock down their enemies with holds.. but a kinetics type controller can often be seen right up front with the scrappers and tanks. (All of the kinetics powers depend on being right up close to the enemy. )

Eventually you sort of develop a little pattern or rhythm with your attacks, and you budget where all your enhancements are going. It's pretty neat.

Question - I got all my alts to at least level 2 and into Atlas Park. I go to the Hero Registration building and start getting missions. First one goes okay. second one - tougher. Third one is invariably in a neighborhood patrolled by levels 4-6+ gangers that kick my ass. This is for ANY class/mission. Am I supposed to just run around cleaning up the streets for a couple of levels and THEN move on the missions or what?

Got caugh in a Rikit attack on Atlas Park last night - what a mess! it was like the world's biggest Rave/Disco/LAN party/WWE match, and there was NO way of keeping track of what was going on. Pretty, in a charotic WTF? way.

Have you been levelling up? (i.e. Talk to Ms. Liberty each time.)

In short: generally, you should just watch yourself when you end up at the far north or south end of the map. And I would avoid hunting except for when on a sewer team* (see below). Just do missions.

* If you see anyone in broadcasting gathering a sewer team, send that guy a tell immediately, or just start hanging around the sewer entrance. Levels 1-6 are generally perfect for Sewer teams.

On Rikti chaos: my advice is to jump right in, but also to make sure and yell "Looking for team!" a few times until someone invites you. That way, even if you don't/can't contribute much, you will be getting a nice steady stream of XP from everyone on your team. And the way Rikti invasions work is everyone is baselined to the Rikti level as soon as the invasion siren goes on. You can team with level 50 guys and be 1st level and still contribute.

Yeah, I visit Ms. Liberty when I get enough XP to level (only have two alts up to 3rd right now) but I've done the first two of 3+ legs of the mission assigned from the officers in the Registration building. Its the 3rd leg that takes you IN to those 4-6th level gangs, so I suppose I need to do some street-sweeping for a couple of levels, or join in the sewers. Lots of folks doing those last night but I held back not know what the dealio was.

I was in the Rikti attack, but not as part of a team - next time I'll be sure to ask for one. Thanks for the tip!

Two or three Sewer teams will get you to 6th-7th within a couple of hours. That's why they are so popular.

Quote from: WerekoalaYeah, I've been playing LotRO for months and I'm used to the idea of being able to solo and level via quests - obviously that dosn't cut it in CoH. :)

Maybe I described this wrong:
Eventually, the missions are (almost) the only thing that will reliably help you level. I'd say starting around 10th level, it's a matter of moving from 1 mission to the next, and there a re a lot of storylines to discover and get involved in.

But joining a sewer team will get you boosted up real quick.

When you hit 4th or 5th level, go to King's Row (take the train) and follow the yellow arrow to the police station to get your police scanner. Once you have that, you basicly just get missions fed to you.  Crank through 3 at a time, then hit the Safeguard mission. After you do this a couple of times you should have a fairly good sense of where missions are and how to find NPC contacts.

I find that tanks and scrappers are the most reliable solo-players. (Controllers are ok too). Some people like blasters, but I think they end up dying a lot. The defenders are the least reliable and slow, but my favorite guy is a defender, and I've almost hit 20th. I'm doing a lot of teaming lately.

Im a blaster, but I'm not sure Devices was the best choice (the Trgeting Drone in particular is a waste of time). I just acquired full on teleport - yay!

Or so i thought - i had assumed the point of the travel powers was to scoot across maps real quick. Unfortauntely TP has a 100yd base range, which makes it rather useless for that. I must be missing something.

One criticism i do have though is how shots (as a blaster) go wild far too off far too often. This really shoudln't happen at all, it's cheap gameplay. By al means have a variable damage level (as WoW does), but don't jip me by having 3 shots miss when im attacking a really dangerous target. That's fucking poor. You'd be surprised how often that happens - even with inspirations and drones (i respecced and got rid of the fucker).

What kind of enhancements are you slotting? By all means get to Faultline or Steel Canyon and pick up some single or dual origin enhancements (accuracy and damage.. more accuracy if you have a problem with hitting)

Okay, making progress. Did my first sewer run (not all the way through apparently, it fell apart after about 40 minutes) and got  up to 6th level (with a Rikti assault thrown in for variety) then got  up to 4th just by bashing thugs. Played about 3 hours in total. Its fun - different from other MMOs in that the SOLE objective is to smash and kill. I guess there's crafting and such later on, but so far its pretty focused. Dosn't seem to be any Roleplaying, though I tried to stay in-character anyway. :)

I'll put in alot of time this weekend, see what happens after level 10 I guess.

In a weird way I've done more roleplaying with this game than any other online game:

...but usually only when I had a 'concept' character. And even then, it would kinda annoy some teammates. Some people would really pick up on it, though.

Note that this isn't very deep roleplaying, but it is remaining in character as you play.

So for example:

I made a small-sized alien insectoid that would only talk in alien-talk. This was originally just meant for laughs, but people kinda liked him. So people would send me tells or chat, and I would respond with "greeble!" or "Grrx!" or whatever. I swear that was some hilarity. I only used him for a few days around Halloween.

I made a troll character (I remember him being a war mace tanker) that talked like a Hollows troll, and had as his backstory that he had been rescued by heroes and decided to "turn his life around". This was a lot of fun for a while. "Mogg tank for you now?" "Mogg have owie!" "Mogg not understand.."

Again, just had him for a few days, but people did talk to him 'in character'.
People would play along with that.

Sometimes I find that starting the ball rolling by obviously roleplaying (i.e, when Ocean Titan is in a Circle of Thorns mission in caves, he might say "This reminds me of the crumbling sea caves of  New Atlantis..." and every once in a while, someone will bite.

Ocean Titan also likes to go on about how he learned his sonic powers from the "secret lore of the whales". When I activate my big shields I usually shout out "Call of the Humpback!" He doesn't get engaged in roleplay very often, but every once in a while.

I had a clown-themed tanker guy that was a lot of fun to roleplay. His whole schtick was.. he was indestructible. And a wisecracking clown. I've basicly recycled much of that character as Velvet Rabbit-- a mischievous pooka melded with the soul of a human slacker. This character is in a roleplaying-oriented supergroup, and they even call me "wabbit".

I've roleplayed alongside plenty of robot characters who would do "robot impressions". Those are fun.

Some of my characters don't have any real roleplaying characters behind them. Lord Cranium and Mutagenik for example are kinda generic villians. I did roleplay Mutagenik in the PVP zone when I was fighting some heroes- there was one particular scrapper that kept coming after me, and I would try and lure her into a dangerous area. I started calling her "Cupcake", (doing kind of a 'Crusher Creel' type persona for him), and she was roleplaying off of that. "Don't you dare call me that!!!"

So that was fun.

The only criticisms I have of the game are that teleport is underwhelming, peopel choose stupid character names (i want proper superheroes personally), and, and most seriously of all, too many shots miss (and i use accuracy enhancements). Even with Targeting Drone the number of shots i make that miss is really staggering. I'd be surprised to find my web grenade actualy hit more than 50% of the time! I've also had about 3 shots in sequence miss, and that is far from a rare occurence. I would go so far as to argue that needs fixing.

how many slots does it take for accuracy? If it takes all your slots to make shots work properly then i really do think there's somehting amiss. No game should have this amount of misfire, it breaks the game.

It takes like 1 or 2 appropriately slotted enhancements.

I am confused as well. I have accuracy enhancements, DO tech enhancments (im a tech blaster), at my level at least.

What do you mean by running? I'm not moving when i fire (and you can't with snipe anyways). I have the sprint power active, but i never ever thought that woudl be a problem since im not sprinting while firing. Life is just easier without having to continually toggle it to move.

Aha. When your sprint power is activated it reduces your accuracy by a lot. You should only leave the sprint power on when you are actually running.

Still playing. Enjoying it quite a bit - sure is a pretty game.

Finally got two characters up to/beyond level 10, and have done a good bit of adventuring in the Hollows. I have to ask - WTF happened there? I asked around in-game and nobody knows (and probably nobody cares). Is there any kind of back-story to this game? I understand most people playing it are just there to blast shit, but I kinda like to know "what's going on" if I'm going to invest more time and effort into things.

History of the Hollows is here: It used to be called Eastgate.

http://www.cityofheroes.com/gameinfo/geography_hollows.html

The Trolls gang planted a series of explosive charges throughout the sewers along a row of Eastgate condominiums. They planned to ruin the district, and then move into the rubble before city crews could properly respond. What the Trolls didn't know was that an extensive series of underground caverns already riddled the area. The cataclysmic chain reaction, known as "the Hollowing," devastated a huge section of the neighborhood, causing it to fall in upon itself.

So that's why the Hollows is all collapsed right now.

More info on the left hand menubar of the City of Heroes website.

Ocean Titan is level 22!

At level 18 it's really starting to creak. I don't mind the repeition - to a point, but it is the same thing every time. I use the same powers in the same way every fight and the XP is starting to get rarified and the progression more tedious than anything. Perhaps I'm on the cusp of opening some new content, and maybe I'd feel better if i had a quicker machine, but I'm not really motivated to subscribe monthly nor upgrade just to play it.
A big 'hmn' all round right now.
