And as is good practice, remember to never use the same password on more than one site. While performing housekeeping, we also decided to upgrade the forums.
This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Some of you may know that we've been working on the first really big open-source supplement for OSRIC, entitled Dangerous Dungeons, for some time now. As things are nearing completion I'd like to share what is already finished and hopefully attract both some interest and further contributions.

Those of you familiar with my Classic Dungeon Designer netbooks for 1st edition AD&D will be pleased to know that the vast majority of those will be appearing in an OSRIC-compatible format. CDD 1: Statblock Reference will be included as an appendix and also as a pdf/txt document for use by individual GMs and authors in their own projects. Nearly all of the spells in CDD2: Spells Reference have been completely rewritten for OSRIC. CDD4: Encounters has been greatly edited and expanded to include all of the new NPC classes, monsters and spells. Some of the completely new additions include rules for aerial, maritime, underwater and extra-planar adventuring, new PC races and classes, and a LOT of new monsters.

Here's the tentative table of contents. Those interested in contributing or just checking out what has already been completed are encouraged to check out the Dangerous Dungeons forum on http://www.knights-n-knaves.com.

Totally excited to see the final product!

I am interested in hearing more about Glyphs and Esoteric Magic!

Kellri

The glyphs are a fairly functional set of around 200+ pictograms that can be used to create player handouts and so on. In the book itself there will be the glyphs themselves and several examples of how to use them. Concurrent with the release of DD, I'll make them available in scalable vector format (.svg) so people can use them to create professional looking handouts.

What?  No Kickstarter?  ;)
The problem is not that power corrupts, but that the corruptible are irresistibly drawn to the pursuit of power. Tu ne cede malis, sed contra audentior ito.

While the dwimmerjoke is dwimmerhysterical, this is exactly where a KS is a good fit. If the product is 90% done, a KS is a great way to raise funds for artwork and printing costs, even if the goal is an open source free product.

estar

Looking forward to this. Thanks for all the work!

Kellri

The original goal, as my editor Stuart Marshall put it, was "an Unearthed Arcana that didn't suck". I think we've done that in spades.

I did seriously consider a KS at one point, and G-d knows I could use the money, but decided against it for a few reasons. I didn't want to dampen my own enthusiasm for doing the writing. I want to take my time and make something I can be proud of as opposed to satisfying a bunch of faceless backers. Finally, I kind of look forward to dropping a multi-megaton sized piece of work on an OSR that has gotten used to people begging for money up front every time they get an idea for a mid-length magazine article.

There will be a free pdf, but the book will also be printed and sold through a traditional RPG publisher in both hardcover and softcover editions. As I mentioned above, there will be some significant digital "extras" to accompany it, including the glyphs, spreadsheet databases for the statblocks and NPC 'rogue's gallery', maps, all the tables in Tablesmith format and probably a few other things.
