This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

My Recommendation:  In the Aeroplane Over the Sea, by the Neutral Milk Hotel.  The finest indie-punk album ever made.

One Horse Town

Life is Sweet by Maria McKee. Very emotional, some say overblown, mix of singer/songwriting and pretty heavy guitar sound. Most certainly not Show me Heaven!

Zachary The First

Hey! I have that album!

They've become more popular as of late, but I'd recommend Picaresque by the Decemberists or Gulag Orkestar by Beirut.  The finest 19th-century indie music you'll ever hear. :)

Any clue as to what these would be, and why they'd be so recommended? I can only hazard a guess by the ridiculous titles that they're pretentious heavy metal, but please, tell me if I'm wrong.

One of the best indie bands to not get discovered yet:

The Long Winters - Putting the Days to Bed
The Long Winters - When I Pretend to Fall

They're on the same label that Death Cab for Cutie used to be on (Barsuk Records). They're great, dynamic pop music with a hint of soul.

Kester Pelagius

Some of my favorite "obscure" music is virtually impossible to find on CD but here goes. . .

Band, Album

Dream Death, Journey into Mystery

English Dogs, Where Legend Began

Womb, Womb (ancient 60s/70s era psychadelic-type rock band)

Cirith Ungol

Elyse (ancient 60s/70s era psychadelic-type rock band)
Mise-en-scene Crypt: My cinema blog.  Come for the reviews stay for the rants.

Big Audio Dynamite - The Globe is one of those albums you'd expect to be at least vaguely heard of but nobody's aware of the album.

Zola - Bhambatha is a fucking great album that needs to be heard outside South Africa.

Brian Eno - Music for Airports is the record lots of people are aware of but don't know.

The Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy - Hipocrisy is the Greatest Luxury is the second best hiphop album ever!

And finally if you want proper music I recommend The Ukranians - The Ukranians for top folk sounds.

I could go on all day peeps.

More time to answer now. :)

Summoning has based all their songs around the work of JRR Tolkien.  It's roughly in the "metal" genre -- but in many ways a lot more like a film score.  Epic sound, samples from Tolkien radio productions, and even a song written entirely in "the black language of Mordor" accompanied by the shrieks of orcs, batle horns, and war drums.

The only thing that makes it "metal" are the guitars on some of the tracks and the harsh vocals (which really work with the Orcish imagery).

Even if Metal isn't your thing, this is worth checking out if you're into Medieval / Fantasy stuff at all.  This is *easily* the best album of 2006. :)

Calexico - Feast of Wire  IMO, the best album of the first half of this decade.  I'm always open to other suggestions, though.

John Morrow

Since people are posting more than one...

Soundtracks:

  • Basil Poledouris: Quigley Down Under Soundtrack (Basil Poledouris does for the Western what he did for Sword and Sorcery with his Conan soundtrack)
  • Kitaro: Millenia (the soundtrack for the anime Queen Millenia)
  • Peter Schickele: Silent Running Soundtrack (early 70s ecological science fiction with Joan Baez tracks)
  • Paul Willaims: Phantom of the Paradise Soundtrack (early 70s rock opera movie directed by Brian DePalma)

Great Soundtracks for bad or mediocre movies (that I use for gaming):

  • Hans Zimmer: King Arthur (good dramatic background music)
  • John Carpenter: Ghosts of Mars (good driving gritty music)
  • Kevin Kiner & David Arnold: Wing Commander  (epic space music)
  • Simon Boswell: Hardware (go ahead and laugh -- but listen to it)

Metal/Gothic:

  • Savatage: Hall Of The Mountain King (my favorite album to run Warhammer FRP by -- mostly fantasy lyrics that are pretty decent)
  • Savatage: The Wake of Magellan (symphonic rock opera)
  • Midnattsol: Where Twilight Dwells (female-fronted metal)
  • The Awakening: Razor Burn (South African Gothic)

Electronic:

  • Synergy: Audion (70s electronic music)

And if you want to hear some interesting music used on Venture Brothers, do a Google search for "Jasper McVain" (you can download legit MP3s for "Mitre Storm" and "Revv Me Up").
