This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

[Medical Hospital] The Medical Game of Medical Melodrama

Balbinus asked for a thread, apparently it isn't a roleplaying game, so here it is in the off-topic ghetto.

So I'm working on a game called Medical Hospital, which is a light-hearted game in which the players all play surgeons in full-on melodrama mode.  Stuff happens, there is intrigue and romance, but the thing that I think is most interesting is that as a player you get to perform surgical procedures.  There's a tactile component; your office supplies become a surgical tray and you get to cut open people's spleens and stuff.  In play this is really, really fun, but it crosses a weird player-character divide that is normally sacrosanct.  Some videos:

How characters and situation are created

How to use surgical tools

Here's a procedure

So, still very much in early playtest, but I'd be glad to talk about it in more detail, Balbinus.

You ARE the enemy. You are not from "our ranks". You never were. You and the filth that are like you have never had any sincere interest in doing right by this hobby. You\'re here to aggrandize your own undeserved egos, and you don\'t give a fuck if you destroy gaming to do it.

Thanks guys.  It's got pretty strong RPG components - you have a character you play - as well as the weird arts-and-crafts angle.  I've worked up about 20 procedures, from an appendectomy to a mitral valve replacement (complete with thoracotomy, CVAD and pacing wires), and you operate under time pressure - the game's currency is stress, and going over time earns you more stress, which limits what you can do.

So, you're encouraging people to Play "Doctor" as adults now?
Those must be some pretty sheltered and lonely people.

Do we have to be all angsty and indecisive and emotional doormats and stuff?

'Cos I hate that. I realise that unresolved conflicts are the essence of a drama, but honestly, it does get tiresome. Pick a boyfriend and stick to him! Oy vey.

Hey guys, it's a light and fun game.  I'm going for a Mexican Telenovela feel.

That uses up a LOT of common office supplies apparently. OFFICEMAX, Office Depot & STAPLES should love this game - you should try to distribute through them.

No doubt!  You go through a lot of paper and post-it notes.  In my Gen Con playtests it was about one sheet of letter paper every twenty minutes.

And ... what ... three or four post-its?  More if you're a hack who just slaps sutures all over the place.

I'm sorry I wasn't able to get in on one of your GenCon games.  It was fun just watching people do the procedures.

Thanks, Tony.  If you're Rafael Chandler (playing the punctilious Dr. Maxwell Bolero), you'll burn through many, many post-its closing incisions.  I prefer speed to precision myself, but of course the medical review board tends to ding me for that.

Pity, it would have been so much cooler IMO if you were going for a MASH feel...

This sounds like a fun idea!  Very cool, Jason!
