This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Hello! New to the site just saying hey...

Quote from: GrabtharsHammer;946203Hahaha! Two of my friends who introduced me to the game (we still play together 25 years later) were from basic/1e and they've never looked back either. How do you like 5e? I have a PDF of the PHB, but you don't really know until you play it...

It harkens back to 2e with no reliance on grid based combat but it definitely has nods to 3/4e which can be adjusted easily to taste. I love how they built the Wizard class to still have actual resource management yet be far simpler to manage then the 2/3e versions. For instance a wizard could have whatever spell but they can only prepare a pool of spells equal to level+int mod usable however they see fit with their available spell slots. People pretty much have been doing very similar for years anyway unless the DM was a hardass. I like Arcane Recovery, Signature Spells and having a 1st/2nd level spell of your choice as at-will I like that a wizard and no other magic user type has two 3rd level floating spells 1x. I love that Fighters are damned deadly and don't die easily like pre 3e DnD. And are the only class with more then two attacks a round in the game just like 0/1e.

I love advantage/disadvantage it gets you to look past your character sheet and skill list and just try something, anything because it has a chance of working like 0e/1e but it's more defined then those games which I'm more comfortable with. I am a huge fan of at-will cantrips because if I want to use a crossbow I'll either be an Arcane Trickster, multiclassed Rogue/Wizard or a Rogue thank you very much. If I'm playing a Wizard I want to do wizard things 24/7. And that includes combat. But just having the capability to use minor illusions or prestidigation anytime? Pure gold with value both in and out of combat.

I like that every class has a magic or martial variant without multi-classing (Arcane Trickster, Bladesinger, Eldritch Knight etc.). And because of that making single class concepts the best and strongest concerning power despite the guys that love trying the "build" minigame from 3/4e best efforts. They did their homework there. Multi-classing is fun but it costs big to be such a generalist in comparison to a single class specialist because of higher level class features and feats with serious heft.

I love that each character class has a role but it's not so hardcore like 3/4e. I like that after only 10-15 editions?(though 4e did an awesome job to be honest with the Bard and Cleric(Invoker)):p they nailed how a Bard should work.

I like the fact the Wizard doesn't just take over, but brings the HAMMER and still kicks ass without it(ritual spells and at-will cantrips they be lovely. It'd be interesting to see a class with access to use any cantrip anytime or ritual spell only just to see if it would be viable).
Don\'t mess with cats we kill wizards in one blow.;)

I also like 5e/2e quite a bit. Prefer it to 3e/4e/0e/1e. Only B/X/BECMI competes for my affection.

It is actually incredibly easy to adapt anything from BECMI, AD&D 1e, 2e and 5e (3e isn't that hard either). The edition warring that takes up so much oxygen and parsing online is a good example of the narcissism of small differences.

I've come to notice this a lot more lately, as I never gave it any thought and I wasn't on any forums either.

Quote from: GrabtharsHammer;945274Hi! I'm not well versed in many RPG's except for D&D. I started in my late teens in '92 with 2e a fact that aggravates me as I completely missed basic and 1st edition which came in my adolescence. We always kept it simple, used character kits at Randy's (buddy and DM) discretion and never got into S&P, but had a blast all though college.

After school and time and distance happened we now get together once a year for a 3 day session in a rented ski cabin. It's been core 3e for about 14 years, 14 hours a day of goodness! I'm trying to get a 1e or basic game going sometime too. Don't know why I shared all that crap but there you have it. Happy to be here!
