This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Hello! New to the site just saying hey...

We never found Basic D&D very deadly as kids. Perhaps we weren't playing 'properly'?

Anyway rather than the retroclones I'd recommend picking up the Rules Cyclopedia in pdf for a song.

And no reason to buy into false nostalgia, a lot of the 'magic' in the games had to do with being young and the novelty rather than some inherent superiority of the system (although I prefer BECMI myself).

These days you'll find far more players interested in Basic and B/X than existed back then anyway. Also we have decades of material to draw on as well as loads of new games and imaginative content for D&D. Now is probably the best time to be playing RPGs.

I have the PDF on my iPad! The "last gasp" of basic rules under TSR I guess. Looks like a tremendous resource. I agree that now is a great time to get into the hobby for all those reasons you stated no doubt!

You know, people keep comparing non-TSR D&D to deck-building in Magic: the Gathering. But maybe it\'s more like Katamari Damacy. You keep sticking shit on your characters until they are big enough to be a star.

That's the plan, although watching those that don't on both accounts have internet meltdowns are entertaining...

Quote from: GrabtharsHammer;945274Hi! I'm not well versed in many RPG's except for D&D. I started in my late teens in '92 with 2e a fact that aggravates me as I completely missed basic and 1st edition which came in my adolescence. We always kept it simple, used character kits at Randy's (buddy and DM) discretion and never got into S&P, but had a blast all though college.

After school and time and distance happened we now get together once a year for a 3 day session in a rented ski cabin. It's been core 3e for about 14 years, 14 hours a day of goodness! I'm trying to get a 1e or basic game going sometime too. Don't know why I shared all that crap but there you have it. Happy to be here!
Welcome. I'm a 2e/5e Dnd and Mage the Awakening 2e girl and hang with the guys just fine. I really don't like 0/1e DnD to be honest so in my opinion you didn't miss much given you never did old style war games. Top that sir.;)

You will do just fine just remember to stand up for yourself without being racist or being some fake pussy like a SJW.

Black Vulmea is correct this is The Adult Swim so enjoy.
Don\'t mess with cats we kill wizards in one blow.;)

Hahaha! Two of my friends who introduced me to the game (we still play together 25 years later) were from basic/1e and they've never looked back either. How do you like 5e? I have a PDF of the PHB, but you don't really know until you play it...

I say play it and make it your own, that was the whole idea behind 0e.  I do love it here you can say what you want and most threads are actual discussions not tip toeing around mods with an agenda.

I moved on from 0e/1e years ago more because I found ways (homebrew ways) to better get the verisimilitude I love, but I do find them 0e and 1e more flexible than 3e+ if you want to make the game your own.  Just ask and you can get me to plug other old school RPGs that work as well as D&D.

When you say home brew are you using the raw framework of D&D and then stuffing it with your own material? Or is it more picking and choosing your favorite bits of different editions and peppering them with your own creations? Where in Boston are you?

A bit of background.  I started with wargames, then was turned onto OD&D in '78-'79.  Played D&D, Traveler, TFT, Runequest and CoC.  My homebrew started as modified 1e, really filling in gaps and making some grappling rules that didn't require a supercomputer.   Over the last 30 years or so it has evolved and no longer much resembles D&D mechanics wise, yet somehow I must have kept something.  I've always made a conversion map for stats, and when I "Convert" my old TSR and Judges Guild modules into my homebrew stats/system they still play like they did under 1e with the same level ranges in my own system.  That is largely intentional as my goal has always been to streamline play and add verisimilitude.  So my homebrew is more of a Frankenstein, which incorporates different ideas from the many systems and games I've played over the years along with my own creations.

I'm in metrowest about 15-20 miles outside Boston.

Love it! Very cool. Always curious to see how people run their games especially if it's a "Frankenstein" as you said, obviously drawing on years of play and different rules sets etc. Very good. I'm an AZ resident now but am a New Englander born and raised. Started playing at Franklin Pierce College in NH.

Very cool. I've family in AZ, half way in the middle of no where.  Kansas and Colorado raised myself but think I've been in New England the longest.  (I always must refrain myself when threads turn to agriculture) Just lots of good work around here in Boston.

I'm happy to share my homebrew or discuss it more here, PM or another thread.
