This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Quote from: Justin Alexander;546741No. You re-wrote and redesigned them into 4E-style powers. Not the same thing.
They function in almost exactly the same way.
Quote from: Black Vulmea;530561Y\'know, I\'ve learned something from this thread. Both B.T. and Koltar are idiots, but whereas B.T. possesses a malign intelligence, Koltar is just a drooling fuckwit.

So, that\'s something, I guess.

Similarly, awhile back on rpg.net someone tried reformulating some 2E 'martial' abilities into power format.

Quote from: Collective RestraintMasterful Strike
Fighter Attack 1
You hit one enemy with your superior training with the longsword, inflicting grevious wounds.
At-Will ✦ Martial, Weapon
Standard Action Melee weapon
Target: One creature
Attack: 1d20 + 1 vs. (THAC0 - AC) and you get 3/2 attacks/round
Hit: S-M: 1d8 + 3 damage; L: 1d12 + 3 damage

AWESOME!

But then, you didn't see:

Special Defensive Training
Dwarf Racial Power
Because of your small size and combat ability against bigger creatures, you are harder to hit.
At-Will
Immediate Interrupt Personal
Effect: When ogres, trolls, ogre magi, giants, or titans attack you, they suffer a -4 penalty to their attack roll.

KICK ASS! But wait till you look at:

Backstab of badassery!!!
Rogue Attack 1
Attacking from behind unnoticed, you are able to deal extra damage, finding the opponent's weak spot.
At-Will ✦ Martial, Weapon
Special: You must attack the target from the back, completely unnoticed by that target.
Standard Action Melee Weapon
Target: One creature
Attack: 1d20 + 4 vs. (THAC0 - AC)
Hit: S-M: 2d6 damage; L: 2d8 damage

Sacrosanct

Maybe it's my personal tastes and preference for efficiency, but instead of having a multi line stat block, it is much simpler just to say:

Weapon Specialization: +1 to hit, +2 to damage, 3/2 attacks per round
Dwarves: +4 AC vs giant sized creatures
Backstab: x2 damage when attacking from behind unnoticed.

What purpose is there in having a huge ass stat block that unnecessarily bloats everything into something harder to follow?
D&D is not an "everyone gets a ribbon" game.  If you\'re stupid, your PC will die.  If you\'re an asshole, your PC will die (probably from the other PCs).  If you\'re unlucky, your PC may die.  Point?  PC\'s die.  Get over it and roll up a new one.

1. Writers are paid by the word.
2. 4vengers don't really think coherently.  They like their power cards and shouting I USE REAPING STRIKE, so if something is a passive bonus, it's BORING.

Also don't forget:

A line written on a sheet might get forgotten.

A color coded card with 4 X the word requirement in your face screams "I'm a button, push me please".
Quote from: JonWakeGamers, as a whole, are much like primitive cavemen when confronted with a new game. Rather than \'oh, neat, what\'s this do?\', the reaction is to decide if it\'s a sex hole, then hit it with a rock.

Quote from: Old Geezer;724252At some point it seems like D&D is going to disappear up its own ass.

Quote from: Kyle Aaron;766997In the randomness of the dice lies the seed for the great oak of creativity and fun. The great virtue of the dice is that they come without boxed text.

A card, with the details of a rules mechanic on it, says "hey, this is a rule you can use without having to interrupt the session to look up some rules in a book!".

But that's also a vote in favour of simple mechanics that can be expressed in a few words, and aren't D&D4's info blobs...

The context here was that there was discussion about how many options etc. were there in 2E (a bit of a derail in a long 'discussion' about whether 2E or 4E was more complex). In order to prove that 2E had actual stuff that could be done, it got reformatted into a thing that the 4E guy could understand :)

I agree, I don't think there's much point having long, bloated power descriptions either.
