This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

WotC is better at producing buzzwords than they are at producing products.

4e's big ones were:

• Exception-based design.
• Effects-based design.
• Design tech.
• Economy of actions.

I'm sure there were others that I'm missing.  5e is in the alpha stages and they're already working overtime at shoveling shit at us:

• Modularity.
• Flatter math.
• Bounded accuracy.

If they were half as good at writing the game as they are at bullshitting, we'd have a decent D&D game to play.
Quote from: Black Vulmea;530561Y\'know, I\'ve learned something from this thread. Both B.T. and Koltar are idiots, but whereas B.T. possesses a malign intelligence, Koltar is just a drooling fuckwit.

So, that\'s something, I guess.

I *do* have a decent D&D game to play...
The problem is not that power corrupts, but that the corruptible are irresistibly drawn to the pursuit of power. Tu ne cede malis, sed contra audentior ito.

-My own opinion is enough for me, and I claim the right to have it defended against any consensus, any majority, anywhere, any place, any time. And anyone who disagrees with this can pick a number, get in line and kiss my ass.

-Be very very careful with any argument that calls for hurting specific people right now in order to theoretically help abstract people later.

Quote from: JonWakeGamers, as a whole, are much like primitive cavemen when confronted with a new game. Rather than \'oh, neat, what\'s this do?\', the reaction is to decide if it\'s a sex hole, then hit it with a rock.

Quote from: Old Geezer;724252At some point it seems like D&D is going to disappear up its own ass.

Asking questions about the fictional game space and receiving feedback that directly guides the flow of play IS the game. - Exploderwizard

Meh. Whatever, what do you expect in a market driven economy?

What I want to know is how Balanced it is, and the amount of Fluff and Crunch in the game.

That's going to take awhile to ascertain. It definitely looks like they're going with a pre 4e writing style though.

I work for a large corporation.  Buzzwords are my mainstay.  One of my buddies decided to start writing down every buzzword he heard on conference calls and post the sticky notes on his wall.  His wall is completely full right now.

Synergy
Worry about the big rocks
pick the low hanging fruit

the list goes on and on.  If I ever own a company with employees, I'll make buzzwords a sack worthy offense.
D&D is not an "everyone gets a ribbon" game.  If you\'re stupid, your PC will die.  If you\'re an asshole, your PC will die (probably from the other PCs).  If you\'re unlucky, your PC may die.  Point?  PC\'s die.  Get over it and roll up a new one.

I agree there is an over-abundance of these. Bounded accuracy especially annoys me. Flatter math is actually an important concept though ( I would probably call it contained math but the idea is the same).

If the buzzword arises out of a real need for a new term, fine. But if it clouds discussion, it is a bit annoying when these things go mainstream.

All bounded accuracy and flat math means is hard caps where's the confusion?

I seriously hope they reconsider. I hate RPGs written like toaster oven manuals talking about their rules in a vacuum like it's a freaking buzzword salad redefining common words like "prone" for the sake of it. Fuck that noise.

The big one now is "verisimilitude"

I swear no one used that until a couple people did, and now everyone is is using it in some attempt to look smart.
