This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Quote from: D-ko on May 07, 2025, 04:00:53 PMPull up the Kickstarter and make your own decision. I've played the 2012 version various times (what got me into it) and made the entire PnP version by hand. It's like they didn't want it to sell or something.

I'm not familiar with the game.  I only know a bit of the premise.  Can you clue me in on the nature of the changes?

Quote from: bat on May 04, 2025, 10:26:56 AMGURPS/Steve Jackson games should definitely drop to red and Soul Muppet games, especially with their latest Kickstarter against capitalism here really goes off the deep end, and is ironic that you are trying to get capital to fight capitalism.

They tarnished Wiz War for a few DEI bucks and it's not a good look at all. I'm glad I am not this mentally inept.

I am mentally inept? I play the FFG version.

They've seemingly retained the mechanics, but the game into some kind of homosexual, unrealistically multiracial, furry cartoon aesthetic which makes their Strange Synergy game look normal. I get that people have to keep pushing boundaries for something to feel fresh (Kanye's HH track just leaked) but this feels very off for a company this big and I have my doubts that Tom Jolly actually approved of this before production. I'll stick with my version designed by Kwanchai, and no... no other version to my knowledge has ever bastardized this game throughout its many editions.

Apparently the same artist for Strange Synergy literally did do the art for this new Wiz War version, so that explains that. Except, he was chosen for that because the game needed weird mash-up characters who all arena battle, not completely unlike Wiz War actually, but the entire aesthetic was that they were weird humanoid characters; that was the gimmick. To drag that into Wiz War when you have artists like Munchkin's Kovalic at the ready just makes zero sense to me. Especially when the resulting characters end up looking weirder than those deliberately meant to look weird for Strange Synergy. They are supposed to be wizards, not broccoli-haired aliens. It feels like a mockery.

Compare what could have been with what we actually got.

Are you just fucking with us here?  Phil Foglio's been doing RPG art for like forty years now; he's hardly some unknown.

Seemed apolitical and non-apologetic. The World War 2 one has a prominent German eagle with the swastika in the centre on a page about Germans. Completely appropriate of course, but even in the day ('70s/'80s) they'd avoid that imagery in table top wargames.
