Quote from: rgrove0172;1003387Well as an official wrap up of this thread I have to report I bailed on d&d before I even got to our first session. Serious conflicts with my setting I just couldn't manage our overcome.  Moving on to something else.looking at Fantasy age now as more friendly to massive house ruling.

Eh? I run 0D&D games often, however have been playing in a 5e campaign for ten months, If I had to bail on D&D I'd probably use Runequest, Castles & Crusades, or FantasyCraft.
Blackmoor grew from a single Castle to include, first, several adjacent Castles (with the forces of Evil lying just off the edge of the world to an entire Northern Province of the Castle and Crusade Society's Great Kingdom.

Quote from: Edgewise;994578Honestly, even though I'm still quite happy with OSR, I think 5e has the best mechanics of any edition since 1e, rivaling BECMI.

I agree with this statement. I'm an old OD&D guy from way back, and its philosophy is still my favorite, but I think that 5E finally cleaned up the rules and made the entirety of the system work well together. I like its approach for lower, controlled stats. I like ascending AC. I like unified XP charts. I know that some of these elements were introduced in 3E, but 5E takes the good stuff without so much of the meaningless complexity.

My two favorite editions are now OD&D and 5E. (AD&D runs a close 3rd.)

Quote from: Gronan of Simmerya;995502Accept OD&D as a loose, seat of the pants, kind of goofy game of exploring "The Fun House From Hell," and you realize that the rules are actually very coherently designed to give that certain kind of game experience.  For instance; all doors open for monsters automatically, and have to be broken open by players.  All monsters can see in the dark, but if they are hired by a PC, they lose both those abilities.
Amen. This is why you are King Gronan.

As you noted OD&D was never designed to be logical world-simulation. It's supposed to be a fun romp through a fantasy setting where the rules and action are loose and fast.

If this is the case or explains why I've dabbled with it for years but never really connected. "Fun romp" g just isn't me thing.

mAcular Chaotic

I always thought of it as an "Alice in Wonderland" type thing.
Battle doesn\'t need a purpose; the battle is its own purpose. You don\'t ask why a plague spreads or a field burns. Don\'t ask why I fight.

Fair enough.  You don't have to like it, I just want to help you understand its basic assumptions so you can judge coherently.
You should go to GaryCon.  Period.

The rules can\'t cure stupid, and the rules can\'t cure asshole.
