One of the real advantages of a monarchy is we'd presumably have a person who was actually in charge and thus accountable. Heads on pikes is a good motivator, but the pikes are less of a threat when the people whose heads need to be on them are invisible bureaucrats or just jet away to different countries.
In charge, yes. Accountable? Not so much. There's a reason we've moved away from feudalism and monarchs.

A Congressional lottery would be a good alternative.

A legislature that reflects the people.

I'd want a caveat that people "drafted" can opt out if they don't want to serve.
Maybe anyone can put their name in the bucket to be drawn, but you don't have to put your name in the bucket if you don't want.
But then we have to ask who's holding the bucket...

I'd go the opposite.  Compulsory state service if you want to vote and have a chance to hold office.  Doesn't have to be military service in this day and age unlike with Athenian Citizen Soldiers but I think having skin in the game is important.  You can opt out of state service but you don't get to participate.

@Ghostmaker:  the lack of accountability was due to the rise in Absolute Monarchy, bureaucracies, and professional armies.  It's more a case of decreasing localization and increasing size of the modern nation state.  It's hard to hold the elite accountable when there's a fanatical, brainwashed military that feels it is different from the rest of citizenry.

I'm not sold on compulsory state service, but I do believe in skin in the game.

Your ability to vote should be contingent on whether you are a net contributor to the government, compared to the services you received from the government. In other words, tally up your taxes, and then tally up the value of all the services provided to you by social programs and the like, and see which is higher.

This is absolutely vital, because you shouldn't be able to force other people to spend their money on you. Otherwise, you end up with problems like two wolves and a sheep voting for what's for dinner, or 51% voting themselves the wealth of the remaining 49%. You only get a say if it's your money being spent. For the same reasons, government paychecks should also go in the second column, disenfranchising most government bureaucrats and politicians.

There must be skin in the game.  Don't care if it is paid by sweat, money, or blood.  You don't vote if you don't pay.

Fuck those whores all the way to hell.  I seen the cops remove the barriers and allowed the crowd to walk in.  I seen the lax security surrounding the building on its most important day.  A day in which you must be crazy, or stupid to have lax security.  It was a fucking set up and no one is fooling me otherwise.

Ah, yes. A common response around here. "People were afraid for their lives, and are suffering trauma from it. Funniest thing I've ever heard." Do you also laugh at combat veterans who duck and cover when they hear a backfire?

If they consider the Capitol their girlfriend, yes.

Combat Veteran compared to a person who has never been in a fight, never had a hard day's work, likely never had to do jack shit that was an actual challenge.  Pretty much the exact same things.

Piles of assumptions here, without any backup -- also typical. Also, still has no clue how PTSD works. At least Pat is honest about their hate of people with mental illness.

Because combat veterans and pampered media flacks have so much in common.

From the article:

Bresnahan, a Navy veteran who has covered Congress since 1994 and co-founded the D.C. newsletter Punchbowl News, said returning to the Capitol after the riots was difficult.

So combat veteran compared to Navy veteran.  But sure, most military veterans have 'never been in a fight'.  You're not being disingenuous at all.
When I say objectively, I mean \'subjectively\'.  When I say literally, I mean \'figuratively\'.
And when I say that you are a horse\'s ass, I mean that the objective truth is that you are a literal horse\'s ass.

Eat shit and die.

You first, asshole.

I hope you wind up in a situation where you are no-shit in fear for your own life or for the ones you love (if your asshole self actually is capable of loving others), and then are asked to return to that situation, day after day. In fact, for the first time, I'm going to wish my luck on another human being:

I wish that you will be forced to  watch as your prematurely born child rots from the inside out until you are forced to make the call -- by yourself, because your spouse forces you to -- to turn off life support on a two-week old.

I wish that you will have the force of will to raise that dead premie's crippled surviving twin to adulthood knowing that they will never see, never have the mental or emotional capability to hold a job, and never form a loving relationship outside their immediate family.

I wish that you will have your spouse die suddenly, of a preventable disease, during the holidays while you are more than 2000 miles from home.

I wish you to have enough traumatic experiences in and around hospitals that, when you hear an alarm that sounds like a low-oxygen alert, you will have full-sensory flashbacks to any of the times you have been in a hospital and been forced to watch a loved one die.

So I wish on anyone who thinks PTSD is anything to joke about.

Someone's feeling their oats.

You see, you're not saying anything that hasn't already been said. We've been called traitors, villains, monsters, racists, etcetera, ad nauseum. What else are you going to say? Are you going to take me off the Christmas card list as well?

That's okay though. It's always good when someone has the gumption to declare themselves a sworn enemy.
