This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

The RPGPundit's Own Forum Rules
This part of the site is controlled by the RPGPundit. This is where he discusses topics that he finds interesting. You may post here, but understand that there are limits. The RPGPundit can shut down any thread, topic of discussion, or user in a thread at his pleasure. This part of the site is essentially his house, so keep that in mind. Note that this is the only part of the site where political discussion is permitted, but is regulated by the RPGPundit.

[Eclipse Phase] In Space, no one is safe from the Swine

I was just trying to source the discussion I cited here: Link.

It was about the politics of Eclipse Phase. Now, in my brief search I found a blog post.

Link

It seems that any sliver of implied-flesh, thin-privilege, or notion that there is anyone, or anything that can be objectified is jumped upon. I quote:

QuoteEclipse Phase is a tabletop roleplaying game mixing themes and moods of horror, action, political intrigue and the post-apocalyptic........ It’s basically Call of Cthulhu in space, and it draws heavily from the genres of post-cyberpunk and British Post-Modern Space Opera........I found the game incredibly appealing.

Then, in the latest book released for the game, I saw this

The poster then goes apeshit on the forums and on the blog post.

I want to try and quote and post more, I really do. By my mind just goes FUUUUUUUU.

Please, look, discuss and all that. It seems that regardless of RPG output the bar is continually being raised/goalposts are being moved/tightened. No one is safe. Well, apart from the targets that are too big to fail/attack.
I play these games to be entertained... I don't want to see games about rape, sodomy and drug addiction... I can get all that at home.

Well it's not a very good piece of art. Nothing worth shouting about but the butt looks a bit silly...

The Ent

It reminds me of that pretty bad superhero artist who traces porn...it might be half traced with one leg and one arm or so changed from the original wich makes it look odd...and yeah it's a bad piece of art imo but also not something to get angry about.

Rob Liefeld?

Quote from: JRT;722032You're thinking of Greg Land...

Yeah that's the one.

Different kind of suck :D
(But the chick's impossible contortions do bring Liefeld to mind, absolutely!)

Yes, that's the thing that has brought Liefeld to my mind.

I love her hair dye job, but those nails are a tragic waste of the future's potential. I vote for less utilitarian boots.

Oh, and apparently in the future we all suffer myopia. Bring coke bottle bottom thick glasses.

You know, people keep comparing non-TSR D&D to deck-building in Magic: the Gathering. But maybe it\'s more like Katamari Damacy. You keep sticking shit on your characters until they are big enough to be a star.

Stop defending the undefendable.

I'm no more defending it than picking up dog shit with a pooper scooper is defending the dog shit from being stepped on.

It's a couple of guys fighting on the internet over ideas they have about pictures in a book. OK.

I don't give a shit about that.

I do give a shit about Eclipse Phase. I like it. I've heard the criticism about the politics of the game and reading it I can tell you I chuckled a few times. The background is very, very developed and written in a way that wants to create a sense of realism through the abundance of detail and coherence of it all... except the concepts about how habitats would evolve and the government structures behind them don't make a lick of sense when you think about it for a split second, and read more like the wishful thinking of people who have talked about the subject matter a little too much in the pubs around the university to make any practical sense whatsoever.

BUT. It's also fairly easy as a group and GM to either (1) use this aspect of the game as base inspiration with the basic factions and relations between them to then basically represent a much more nuanced approach of government structures within them and what they mean to the populace living there, for one thing, and/or be very nuanced on the greater scale of background when talking about the ultimate goal of the  TITANs in triggering the Fall, and/or (2) actually focus the game on activities having to do with Firewall or any other hypercorp/organization with interests away from habitats altogether, the Earth, whatnot, and therefore not care about the political aspect of the game at all.

I think (2) will suit some groups really, really well. I like politics and conspiracies involving political entities so I'd probably involve some dosage of (1) in my own games. The bottom line to me is that the political angle of Eclipse Phase isn't a problem when treated as a starting point in the book, not an end in and of itself.

In regard to the setting - I'm surprised, seeing how Altered Carbon's film is now in development, they should've tried to get licence from Morgan for Kovacs universe, seeing how well of a fit EP's mechanics would have been for it (and in fact that's how I use it, just tossed out the whole horror stuff).

Yeah, Tron:Legacy pissed me off too.
