Title: "Being Single Is Now a Disability, According to the World Health Organization"
Post by: ArrozConLeche on October 24, 2016, 05:27:01 PM
This is such a stupid notion that I hope this thread gets closed immediately. If Hillary wants to drone bomb anyone, it should be the stupid fuck who came up with this idea at the WHO.

QuoteAccording to the Telegraph, the World Health Organization will change its definition of disabilities to classify people without a sexual partner as "infertile." The controversial new classifications will make it so that heterosexual single men and women, as well as gay men and women who are seeking in vitro fertilization to have a child, will receive the same priority as couples. This could make access to public funds for IVF available to all.

QuoteDr. Adamson adds that, "It puts a stake in the ground and says an individual's got a right to reproduce whether or not they have a partner." For countries with government provided healthcare and public funding for IVF procedures, this could have significant ramifications. "It fundamentally alters who should be included in this group and who should have access to healthcare. It sets an international legal standard. Countries are bound by it," Adamson says.

Countries aren't bound by anything the WHO does.  But sure, if I have a right to reproduce, then it's mine.  Rights don't depend on circumstance.  So a single individual has the same right to reproduce as one half of a couple, or for that matter one third of a triad.  That's how all the sci fi books deal with it.  I think it's ring world (Niven, not Prachet) each person has a right to 3/4 of a child?

Also nonsense statements like that quoted above is why I think 'human rights' are a category mistake.

Who's providing the rest of the DNA and carrying the baby to term?  I thought single women could get a sperm donor and do IVF already, so who is this distinction meant to help, single men without a partner who are going to hire a woman to carry the baby to term?

Or is "right" in this case all about "free funding for it"?

BRB calling the VA.

Actually, fuck it.  By the time they even answered the phones I'd be married, then divorced and remarried again.

After reading the quoted text this is an overreaction hyperbole fail thread. Suggesting that single people should qualify for financial assistance and/or health coverage so that they can get pregnant is hardly equivalent to being "disabled"? What corner of your butt-cavern did you pull that connection from?

Everyone does have a right to reproduce. That doesn't mean government should be helping ANYONE at all to do it.
