Title: Trump Links / NPC idea reference
Post by: gabriel_ss4u on June 22, 2009, 01:15:21 AM
Here is a Thread you can referrence Trumps or good Trump ideas/pics from the web. (let's get off the Julia thread with that)

I left a link somewhere on a thread for this page I think.
linkhttp://gabriel-ss4u.deviantart.com/favourites/

Lotsa Chaos Lords, Amberites, creatures/monsters,feel free to look at my fav.s I collected over the year or more, ignore the Eevee evolutions unless you like poke'mon too.
All the others are awesome ideas for characters in Amber or Chaos or even elsewhere in that vast Amberverse.

Feel free to comment on here about any of the artist's pictures you may use, I'd like to know anyways. Cool to me.
the Angel stuff I use for my Avalon.
Kinda like In Nomine/Nobilis/Nephilem, sorts feel there.

Feel free to repost any links to Trumps on-line.

I'm repurposing this link from another thread because it makes a lot more sense here: when I can I like to note other works of art that might be interesting. I did recently come across one (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Study_after_Velazquez%27s_Portrait_of_Pope_Innocent_X.jpg) that I thought would be great as a mysterious trump for PCs to discover, possibly from the Chaos side of things.

You're welcome Croaker.
Any one imparticular ya love?
I can't get over Wen-M's character art, he's great!

I like the one you put too weilide, different, very Chaos-like.

When I made this thread, I had the idea that I'd be able to chat about some of the inspirational cool pics that make me think AMBER! or CHAOS!
Here's one. I'm gonna do one one a week, if ya love it I'll have the link to it's web page and you can leave a 'kudos' if you want.
Otherwise feel free to comment on it.
I'll also tell you who they 'look like' IMC, and maybe a tid-bit about the NPC.

page link;
http://asaenath.deviantart.com/art/Heart-Eater-112314317
OK, this looks very 'Trump-like' & gives me many ideas.
I said; "Chanicut" right away.
I looked on my chart of NPCs under House Chanicut's ranks, if there was a Chanicut female, PC ranking level, that had a name with no stats or description yet.
Yes!
Idelia du Chanicut, the picture inspires me to see the Chaosian as she may be IMC:

A Trump specialty House of Chaos IMC, I look upon the mirror 'my' Idelia seems to be coming out of.
A Mirror based Trump power like the Shroudlings. She searches with her Logrus tendrils & Mirror Trump for redheaded women of shadow who are in love, learns them/mimicks them through their mirror, and slowly poisons their psyche, driving them insane, becoming their puppeteer, stealing or toying with their mate who woos with blood red roses, like a Japanese folk curse/legend.
Yeah... Idelia.
perfect.

I must say those art some skillfully done trumps.
(However)
Whoever did them paid no attention to character symbols, colors, or looks according to RZ's descriptions.

They'd make nice Chaosians, or Player Characters some, and a few may pass for the novel Amberites, but the one they were drawn to represent may not be the best one they match in looks.

The artist needed to read the books better, but he couldn't have drawn them much better. The do look good, whoever they are.

Totally agree otherwise I would have stolen them long ago for a myriad of projects. The problem with artists, and I have known a few, is they hate working to a tight brief like the amber trumps. A comic artist would be the best bet.
The closest are the ones in the Illustrated Roger Zelazny (not the illustrated Guide which are shite and Timothy Dalton as Corwin ...pleeeeeaaaasse) but they are very 70s ish. When I first started playing games with an Amber theme back in 84 or something I colour photocopied them and got laminated cards made up but not you look at it and its not quite there.
When I have 10 grand to spend I am going to commission someone to do me a set to put up in my study.
My cousin, a skilled artist, has done a lot of the one for our previous games (a few of whcih are on my site) but I can't get him to do 'Canon' ones

Because these are not amber characters, but pictures one found and used for them. Notice how most of them (even including "suhuy") have the triple-headed dragon theme, and blond hair, and none has an unicorn or a serpent.

Is anyone aware what series or story they are from?
I'll use a few for some Chaosians fer sure.

I am guessing they are from A Song of Ice and Frie by George R. R. Martin, a personal friend of Zelazny.

This album (http://songoficeandfire.tribe.net/photos/116bec51-cd9c-44cf-add5-501ff1fe8cd8) has a lot of similar artwork.  There are some random other things in there, but a lot of them are great for Trump, especially starting here (http://songoficeandfire.tribe.net/photos/9a31d8eb-ca7b-4e88-9b0f-71e0ce0cb654) onward.

Ah, they are portraits by a person named Amok.  Here are more (http://www.asshai.com/biblioteca/historia/Targaryen_amok.php) (including some listed in the gallery).

EDIT:

And the official gallery (http://en.amokanet.ru/gallery/martin/).

OK, this Witch from DarkSun always struck me as a good Lady of Chaos... well, not good, quite evil as a matter of fact.
I use the picture to represent a Lady of House Wickling, specializing in Demon conjuration.
Lady Synn du Wickling, Scion of the Serpent of Void & Flame.

ain't she cute?

Lately, I've had some luck using Gimp (specifically, Gimp2) to convert photos to "trumps".  The software is pretty good at making a photo seem like a painting, penciled drawing, pastels, etc.  You can add borders and various effects.  I've ben learning the software simply through trial and error and have had some good results.

My resulting "trumps" aren't that impressive.  I don't pretend otherwise.  IMO, they're more interesting to look at than simple photos, however.  Here are a couple.  (the first is intentionally meant to look damaged and smeared)

Yeah I played with GIMP but I have been using photoshop for 10 years so tend to stick with it. I find my efforts at converting photos to images like this are generally woeful which is why i tend to trawl the web for images I can tweak or get my cousin to do originals although he is going through a lazy bastard phase.

Windows 7 is way better than XP or Vista as my mate just said nearly as good as Ubuntu.

On another topic I was thinging of blowing some of this year's bonus on commissioning an artist do do some decent trump type images of the Amberites. The ones in the rule book are okay for Brand and Benedict but I could get a whole set of the 9 princes for $400.

umm... well no a hell of an artist would cost $1000 an image .... but there are a few young guys that will do single posed figures for c $50 a pop. That is really cheap if you think about it I mean a decent drawing will take an artist 3 - 4 hours to complete often more so you are actually paying $12 - $13 dollars an hour and here in the UK a car mechanic costs £40 an hour a plumber costs £60 an hour and I have IT contractors working for me on £80 an hour and I can do the IT bit some of the plumbing and a bit of the mechanics myuself but i could never draw a decent image.

art, as with beauty, is in the eye of the beholder.
xP

Jim Lee's 'comic art' is the basis for character 'look' on the new DC Online graphics.... now THAT comic art can get expensive!
though I have original pieces from Lee & others, my pay range for a drawing I usually pay is between 60 ans 150 American$, highest for Travis Charest piece, unfinished even, but true ART.

That's not really how I picture Dworkin.

As for heromachine, I agree its a good resource.  But lazy as I am, and enamoured with other people's artistic skills, I think deviantart is more to my liking.  My last campaign was run with the aid of literally thousands of deviantart images (didn't end up using half of them, mind you).

It wasn't really how I pictured him initially, but when I saw it, I was inspired. III/IV spoke to me of the passion of creation and evoked Dworkin's speech to Corwin about the urge to create. II had a very broody, Lord-of-Chaos feel to me and the eyes evoked the price one pays for ultimate knowledge.

I admit, it doesn't work for everyone. Fortunately, there are many awesome artists at DeviantArt to flesh out everyone's taste.

I've found that some of the cards from the board game Dixit (http://www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/39856/dixit) can be pretty good, and they are a nice physical size, too.  And the game is great fun as well.  In particular, I like the upper left card in this first set for Deirdre:

The expansions Dixit 2 (http://www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgameexpansion/55660/dixit-2) and Dixit Odyssey (http://www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgameexpansion/92828/dixit-odyssey) also look like have a lot of good cards, I just don't have them.

Most of these cards make some great Trumps for places (and traps) too.
