So... About the faithful

In the election of Francis the First i was thinking this might be an interesting conversation.

Do you use the Church of the Unicorn or the Church of the Serpent?

I had a whole thing about Primal Creatures.  General creatures would generate a King of their kind.  Unicorn.  Serpent.  Bear.  Butterfly.  Cat.  Rooster. Dog.  Horse.  Etc

Each generated some religious following in shadow.  Some became Icons.  Unicorn of Amber.  Serpent of Chaos.  Bear of Avalon.  Ygg of Mandalay.  Others were known.  Morgenstern the Horse.  Shaz the Cat.  Chanticleer the Rooster.  Flitter the Butterfly.  

I had Julian riding Morgenstern.  Shaz spent his time in the Castle of Amber.  Flitter followed the wargoddess Doria, called Lady, and detracted from her doombearing goddess of death attire.  

I also had most the Elders invest in building tombs on Kolvir, just in case, as well as build Unicorn Churches.  The players followed in suit.  I occasionally slipped a point their way if they were religious.  I had one player who ran Gawain, a Paladin if the Unicorn. (I really tried to not use the word paladin, but he insisted and justified it in context. )

What place did faith play in your games?

My Unicorn cult was Shinto-esque, shrines where She'd been spotted and shrine keepers who, if devout, had some minor ability to bless. Oberon liked it that way.

My Serpent cult was primarily concerned with keeping the beast happily asleep. Massed monks chanting spells all the time in shifts. An active Serpent was a very bad thing. The cult's masters' main concern was that the supply of (99% involuntary) monks remained steady. Suhuy backed them up.

Never touched the cult of the unicorn.

I had the church of the serpent be, well, a powerful, but sleeping, political organization.

I didn't have active religious groups around the Primal Beasts, except for the Unicorn and the Serpent.

I did make considerable use of the Amber Cults.  This amused the players for a long time as members of Amber cults kept turning up in Amber, usually as members of the Embassy of Chaos.   Despite being an outlaw movement in Chaos, it seemed, surprise, that those eager to join the Embassy were often Cultists.

Often they embarrassed themselves when Benedict, Bleys, Corwin or Llewlla showed up in person.  

The players where not at all amused when cultists of their very own arrived.  

When the ruler of Chaos decided to squash the cults the players had to decide if they would defend their cultists or let them perish.  Fun and games.

I've used both churches quite a bit. In one recent campaign, I played up the whole concept with Gerard as Pontifex of the Church of the Unicorn; most of the other royals don't really give a damn about religion, but Gerard really believes this stuff and takes it quite seriously.

I wouldn't say he's  one of my favorites, but he is one that I tend to vary most in how I play him from one campaign to another.
