I think one of the great strengths of the Amber series is its grounding in Earth but I think that setting tends to get lost in roleplay what with all the excitement around Amber, the Courts, etc.

How have you incorporated Shadow Earth as a setting into your campaigns?

gabriel_ss4u

oh yes!
many shadow earth's as a matter of fact.
But the 1 referred to as in the game books, Flora's shadow earth, yes.

As of the current campaign, the PCs have had interactions with something like 100 different Shadow Earths.
Currently, a group of government agencies across a whole series of parallel earths seem to have banded together to kick out the Amberites and Demons alike from "their" universes.

That's very interesting. What is the degree of understanding of the Amberverse these agencies have ? Do they become some sort of commonwealth equivalent of the golden circle ?

It's interesting to speculate how much secrecy would be involved. A good opportunity for some Foucault's Pendulum / ancient cabal shenanigans. Also a good way to work in some more of what Corwin might have been up to all that time on Earth before he regained his memory. It might be that even in his amnesiac state he could be capable of navigating some of the porous edges of highly similar shadows without really realizing it and in the process put some of founders of these agencies in touch with one another for the first time.

I love the Amber subforum just for these talks. Harvesting interesting ideas.

To me Earth isn't just another shadow. I like the concept that the longer Amberites spend time in a shadow the more substential it becomes. Sure they can find and visit alternate versions of the same shadow like Corwin did with Avallon, but I like to consider that substential shadows have a special role among them. This special role is something blurry that I define in a different way every time I think about it.

At first, they had very little information, but over the course of the campaign, and in no small part due to the actions of PCs (and a couple of NPCs), they've come to understand a great deal about the real nature of the universe, and they have access to a huge amount of power.

The problem is that those same experiences has apparently led them to be completely xenophobic about both Amber and Chaos; their policy is capture or kill Amberites, Demons or Chaos Lords on sight.
