Hello,

1. Does the game have an advantage/disadvantage mechanic?

2. Can my character own slaves in the game?

Thanks

Quote from: HappyDaze on May 31, 2024, 12:58:56 PMYou should focus on telling us what it is, not what it is not.

This is the new edition of the game that has been around since 2007. Like always, it is set during the start of the American Revolution, but now the timeline has been pushed back to the aftermath of the Battle at Concord-Lexington. The tone and setting are still the same.

Colonial Gothic is designed from the perspective of the American Colonists: witches are real, devils and monsters run rampant in the world, and Magic exists—usually with terrible effects on all involved. Most Colonists have either chosen to deny the supernatural or rationalize it away. In contrast, others have been irreversibly damaged by their experiences with it. But some know and accept it for what it is and act accordingly, willingly choosing to place their reputations, faith, and sanity on the line to fight back. Seeing themselves as the last line of defense against the onslaught of evil; these characters war with the terrifying forces that lurk in the shadows.

Mechanically, the mechanic is still the same--roll d12 and meet or beat a Target Number to see if you succeed or fail. I have made a few tweaks to them, but they already play. an earlier version, you can still use the previous supplements with the new edition.

Where the game stands out is the historical setting material included. This has been expanded, in some cases extensively added to, and designed to get gamers up to speed on a topic they might not know much about.

The game speaks for itself, and thankfully, the other game does not.

Why so down on FoF? When it was in development, and shortly after its release, you had good things to say.

Apparently there's a better version out there from the same author without all the Censorship.  It's a bit older from what I read on Tenkar's video. Can't seem to find it.

In full sincerity, this seems like an outrage article to drive attention.

Hate reading, and hate watching, and hate attention are still the same thing as attention.

What kills a a political movement, revolution, product of activism more than hate?  apathy, resounding, deafening apathy, these slimy bell-crawling monosyllabic morons don't even deserve our attention let alone our hate.

This is not to say these people should be unopposed, but reasoning and words and making scenes only emboldens them, hating the new woke marvel movies isn't what killed them, nor Star Wars, its that nobody watched them, that's what killed them.

Quote"Everyone," she said, "thinks that hate and love are somehow opposite forces. They are not. They are the same force, facing opposite directions." She glanced aside at me. "Love is a fire, my Knight. Love turned the wrong way has killed as many as hate. Reason, young wizard, is the opposite of hate, not love."

I think this runs simply deeper than merely shoving partisan politics into our Escapism.

This goes for all media that attempts a strong interjection of allegory or "Lesson" into it's craft and form.

Our ancient myths and stories were not so dumb'd down and simple as "moral lessons" even if there was a moral to be conveyed, and they often were far more nuanced than simply moral lessons, even if that was a neat side effect.

I think there was a good reason Tolkien hated the notion of allegory in story, and so goes the same in my eyes for roleplay, and because the current lefts politics view no action outside the realm of politics they are always an eternal enemy at the gates for our Escapism.

There is no connection to the raw human condition, only pledges of allegiance or declarations of defiance to these possessed.

Quote from: jhkim on May 31, 2024, 03:18:51 PMI've been mulling over how to do magic properly, and I'm still not satisfied with it, so I want to avoid magic in my next one-shot. During the Third Age, that's not hard.
I suggest looking at Adventures in Middle Earth or Lord of the Rings RPG. Most of the "magic" characters can do are found in culture specific virtues (feats). Which I believe will translate to edges in Savage Worlds although I am not particular familiar with SW.

The designers did a good job of incorporating low key magic through this subsystem. If you are interested I can post some examples. Also note they are very much roleplaying oriented as opposed to D&D 5e combat oriented feats.

Quote from: Darrin Kelley on May 31, 2024, 06:19:15 AMI feel the female Custodes thing is just something blown way out of proportion. GW is always retconning things for 40k. What makes this any different than their other retcons? I don't get it. It seems to be a whole lot of controversy about nothing.

The major complaints is that this change is politically driven, and GW are gaslighting the fans over it.

FWIW, on FB I'm in that group and the breakaway "non-progressive" D&D group (which that guy is also in), and from what I can see from what else he's posted he's just a shit-stirrer; I think he posts extreme things like that just to see what happens. Kind of a "this is so insane no one could support it". But then you get the comments from people that do, which is the scarier part.

It's a shame, since that group started off as a pretty good one, no politics or ideology, just gaming discussion (even though the group creator was actually very far left). It very quickly went downhill when the admin team expanded to essentially the Woke Justice League.
