EXPERIENCE POINTS
I have begun a rigorous count of the party's experience points. Some pointers about the way I am calculating the experience accumulated by the party, as well as the detail of the challenges faced, monsters defeated, treasure accumulated and ad hoc experience follows.
General Party Experience: I will generally not nitpick about who killed what, who's got what idea and how. I want everyone to profit from the group's progress, so in general experience points are all put into a single pool and divided between party members. There are two exceptions to this: (1) the party is divided. Experience points are recorded for each group separately, and then divided between each group's party members. (2) Ad Hoc Experience points (see below).
Enemies Defeated: Enemies that are killed, routed, surrendering, taken prisoners or otherwise overwhelmed by the party in physical combat or other circumstances (as judged by the DM) are ipso facto defeated. The exact amount of experience points yielded by a particular critter will vary with circumstances, how the particular combat unfolded, what was the force of the opposition compared to the group's, and so on. I'm actually following the guidelines of the DMG in this respect.
Treasure Accumulated: Only treasure that is taken out of the dungeon, secured by the group or transformed into a transportable medium (put into chests carried by porters, for instance) is counted as experience.
Ad Hoc Experience Points: these are points for good ideas, smart/cool/productive role playing, anything that in my judgment makes for a positive difference in the game. They are generally benefiting all members of the group, but may on occasion be applied to a particular character as well (i.e. all the members profit from the good stuff, the guy who comes up with the good stuff profits from it twice, once as part of the group, once as the guy who came up with the good stuff).
Leveling up your character: Given that we are running a play-by-posts game, with all that entails of game pace and so on, it would be kind of unproductive for me to strictly enforce performance ratings and weeks of study necessary to level-up your characters as a result (which I would enforce were the circumstances different; the performance ratings -how you role play your character, your class archetype, participate to the group's progress etc- still exist in the game: they are in effect Ad Hoc experience points instead). Characters will therefore level up as the game progresses, whenever they have the time to take some sustained rest outside of the dungeon (up to DM interpretation). The characters are basically recharging their batteries, and in so doing, digest the experiences they have just lived through, getting better at evading dangerous situations (HPs), fighting critters (To-Hit), expanding their mind in order to be more receptive to the rites of their religions or to the mysterious patterns of their magic (new spells slots) and so on. Exceptions might occur, depending on particular levels, abilities and requirements of particular character classes (as warranted by such specifics).
Actual listings of all the different elements counting in Experience calculations (enemies defeated, treasure accumulated, ad hoc XPs - the items themselves, not the particulars of XP values) as well as the actual, separate experience counts for each player character will follow. If you want to comment on this methodology, think I've forgotten something or should consider some aspect I have not discussed here, or the particulars of the counts themselves, feel free to PM me directly, or post in the OOC thread to keep this one clear (http://www.therpgsite.com/showthread.php?t=18732), as you feel appropriate.

Interesting. Might be the "level up" part as well.
