Title: Private D&D Game
Post by: Sano Arcanos on December 16, 2012, 03:59:58 AM
Not looking for players, just creating a post for the game to run on. Game is full.
+++++++
Okay my friends, here's the basic breakdown.
PM me what you want your characters to be - races and classes only. You have the full compendium of D&D Rule books for the 4.0 edition to choose from. I will construct the characters using an equally fair and balanced method (no, not FOX news). Then, I will email you your character stats and abilities. We can start playing from there. This will be a long, and extremely invested game. Years will pass during these campaigns. Your characters will grow from weaklings to gods, and perhaps even fall. I promise. You will not be disappointed.

A few house rules:
0. Rule Zero is the Rule of Cool.
1. Posts must be in keeping with forum rules.
2. Rules will be altered as needed to ensure a fully fun version of the game. This will be more or less a bastardized version of D&D.

Dice rolling will be handled as follows:
Go to the site rolz.org.
In the upper right hand corner, you'll find a link named "Dice Room". Go there and enter your nickname for this site (For me, Sano Arcanos) and, for the room, Immortals Dream. Then, enter the dice you're supposed to be rolling. This will generate the results.
Next to the results there will be a little white die. Click on that, then paste the at least the second link set (Simple BBCode) into a reply here on the forum. That will generate the image you see below, telling everyone your score.

For specifications, you each have exactly 100gp to buy weapons, armour, and standard adventuring items. Choose wisely. You have no idea what I might throw at you, or what goodies I might "drop" by mistake. >.> So yeah... don't forget to do that. PM me your equipment so that I can add it to your sheets. Of your armour and/or weapons, I will choose one item to give one enchantment to. So... yeah...

Title: Introduction
Post by: Sano Arcanos on December 18, 2012, 04:12:01 AM
You find yourself in the city of Port Sarvin, the capital of the Republic of Verbena, a large, primarily human nation in the south of Yusia. You are in the library of a wealthy nobleman of the nation, a Lord Diaza Holbarn, Dane of Catherbar and Lord Chancellor to President Cestus Dalga, leader of the Verbena Republic.

"Bring me the heart of the Elundari, adventurers, and you will be richly rewarded," begins the nobleman in front of your party. The ornate tapestries and rich, dark-wood paneling of the library in which you stand makes quite obvious the nobleman's affluence and influence.

Lord Diaza sat quietly in his chair, swirling a dark colored liquid in a crystal chalice, ocassionally sniffing it with a sound of approval.

"The Elundari, adventurers, is a tribe of... beast-men who live along the edge of the River Elund, just north of the city. The Elundari have a particularly... shiny stone I would have. Now, I've made quite clear my desire for this rock, and have made many an offer to purchase it from them fair and square. But, all of my offers have been turned down. I'm not telling you to slaughter them all - the males... the females... the descendants... - no... They constantly offer me - me! - an ultimatum. How you go about obtaining the gem is of no concern to me. But, I would greatly appreciate any adventurer who brought the pretty back to me, do you understand?"

Lord Diaza stands and walks to the low burning fireplace. Sighing, he tosses his glass into the fire, causing a loud hiss and musical sound of shattered crystal. "The Heart of the Elundari is kept in their one permanent settlement, the old temple of theirs at the source of the River Elund. They guard it fiercely. I would, of course, recompense any and all expenses involved in obtaining the jewel, as well as a lovely reward for the one - or ones - who bring it back to me."

The nobleman turned back to you. "As skilled as you each are, I feel that... it will be necessary for you to acquire additional aid. Therefore, I have arranged for a particularly... useful addition to your party. He will meet you outside of the city, on the road leading to the north. Gods willing, you'll find him before he finds you. And... do be careful now. Ta ta!"

With your mission in hand, the Lord motions for you to leave the library. A servant stands at the doorway, ready to escort you to the city gates. This is your story.

Falchion Brachebach, in his constant attempts to observe the customs of the living flesh, slightly lowered his metal head.

"My Lord Diaza, you have nothing to fear as long as you have one of my unique gifts on this task." Falchion's words slightly echoed in his chest as he spoke; his mouth creaked as it opened, and snapped a bit as the final word was said. He would have to see about oiling that later. He saw no real fault in it, but sometime living beings found the creaks and groans he developed annoying. It would not do to have them refuse to listen, should he get lost, or need to hire a smith for repairs.

The metal giant moved away from the others, politely nodding at the servant as he waited to be escorted out of the library.

These colored words are my thoughts
These are my actions
These are words I say outloud
Spoiler
"As long as I am allowed to excercise my own discretion... I'll be happy to collect your playpretty!" I say with a giddy grin. The chance of having a reason to show off my arcane mastery was a huge plus to the mystery. Hopefully, I used the word discretion right. Last time I said it, a woman slapped me. Or was that desicration? Wait... Which word meant what? As long as I get to excercise my on... Desicration? Dissection? Desecration? Descrition? Excretion? Did it really begin with a d anyway? Why do words have to be so confusing! I remember being a kid... Saying the same five words over and over, and everyone understanding... They thought it was cute. Aw... He doesn't know what he's saying... I'm sure he meant hug! Aww... That's adorable. Or was it the other word... Horrible? Same thing, really... But hat about the badgers? They never found the little ones... Wait... What badger? Who? What? Who's in my head?!?!?!

"Get out of my head whoever you are! There's not enough room in there for the both of us!" Wait... Did I say that out loud? Uh oh... They'll think I'm crazy now... Better say something that isn't crazy... Ah... Uh... Got it! "Is what a crazy person would say. But I'm not crazy. So... Ah... Yes, my Lord Diaza. I'll happily retrieve your shiny." Smooth as lamp oil...

Oh... Is that the lady that's gonna take us to the door? She looks nice... I wonder if she's alive? Alive? Olive? No... That's not right... What's that word! Argh! "Artichoke! No! Available, that's it! Available!"

Shit... Did it again, didn't I? Well...Shit

Lord Diaza curiously eyed the strange child mumbling to himself about vegetables, badgers, and various other oddities. After the sudden exclaimation of "Artichoke! No! Available, that's it! Available!", he decided to step in. "Are... are you okay there, son?"
Perhaps he should have chosen his employees a little more mature... and sane. "How old are you, exactly? And, forgive my asking, but who was your teacher again? Come to think of it... I can't even remember why I hired you... Normally, I tend to shy away from groups with children in them."

Did he just call me a kid! That arrogant... Play it cool, Mith... Play it cool... This is a big job with a big payout... And he's pretty high up. This is just what you need. This is your big break... Soon everyone will know the name Mithanos Yvandari! Yeah! Alright... Gotta be cool about this... How to convince him I'm amazing?

"Well, sir, I'm just a little nervous being around such an important person. And, it's true I'm only a kid compared to te rest of these guys... But I'm just as strong and super useful, to! I'm ah... Like a mechanic to my squeaky friend over there! Yeah! And, I can cook a mean meal. And, if I have to, I can call down hellish terrors on my enmities heads 'cause I'm so awesome. Besides, we're a package deal! I always go where these guys go..." Smooth... And not a lie so far, either.

Just in case, I'm going to make a diplomacy roll to convince him that I'm reliable. I have a diplomacy of 10, so here's my roll:url=http://rolz.org/info?2778692](http://rolz.org/embed?2778692)[/url]

"If he becomes a liability, we shall relieve him of his uselessness." The giant did not turn around, but cocked his head sideways so Mith could see the left of his two soulless eyes. His next words were spoken much softer, only those closest (meaning Mith and the maid) heard it in the Common tongue. The rest of the room only heard the squeak and snap of his metallic jaws. "If you touch me I will relieve your body of the burden of supporting your head."

Facing the servant again, "When were ready to get going, I would be very thrilled. I am not getting any younger and the good lord here seems anxious to get his item. Should we not hasten away to obtain it?"

"Right. Well, my good adventurers, be swift in returning. I am ever so anxious to know about my prize!" the Chancellor commented as he motions towards the maid at the door. The maid opens the door and leads your party through the extensive manor, filled with a plethora of rare and valuable objects. At the door, the maid bows to you and directs you towards a guard standing at the gate of the manor.

"My lord has instructed that you leave the city immediately, as your last member is waiting patiently just outside the city gates. Check around the fields, as it's likely to be his favorite haunting spot."

Not wishing to go against the word of a nobleman in his home city, you swiftly make your way to the city gates. The guards nod to you on the way out before closing the gates. Before you is a wide, open road with large fields on either side. You walk a few yards away from the city walls, and come to a spot that seems reasonable for a meeting of fellow contracted hands. On the left side of the road is a large field with a few trees in it, a few stalks of withered corn, and a scarecrow. To the right is a stable, for all intents and purposes abandoned, and a keeper house connected to it. There is no traffic on the road at this time of day, so you are, for all intents and purposes, allow. Off in the distance, you hear the slight call of ravens, signaling the day's death and the evening's birth. From a casual glance, you see no one awaiting you.

I smile fondly at the Ravens feasting
Upon the last remaining stalks of summer corn in the
Setting sun. 'Yes, my children, enjoy, lest it return to the earth.' I think to myself.  Suddenly, I hear footsteps.
Turning, I see a myriad group of beings walking the path towards
The field. 'I wonder if this is my new charge the
Generous Lord has contracted my services for? Such an odd group.
I do hope they're friendly. People tend to flee from
Me.' I continue pondering to myself as they
Approach. The feasting Ravens scatter to the
Wind with a loud 'CAW!!'

Title: Private D&D Game
Post by: Sano Arcanos on December 19, 2012, 03:52:38 AM
Okay, first, Sky, the color thing is getting a little confusing. Part of what you wrote sounded more like thinking, so I'm not entirely sure what you're trying to express. How about this. If you're thinking something that the others DO NOT KNOW, for instance "I'm going to burn this house down when we leave", put it in red. If your thinking inconsequentially, like "You can't trust these people, after all", just leave that black. Okay? Just to make things a little less confusing for me... Please?
Also, what time zone are you in?
And finally, you should roll perception, unless you're doing some kind of magical sweep, which would require spells and such. Since I don't think you have anything that lets you do that, just do a perception check, okay? Great.

Also, if you're asking questions about what to do OUT OF GAME, you can put that outside of the spoiler box. And to avoid having a messup in the code, you can put your rolls outside of the box, too. Just be sure to say what you're rolling for. Great job so far, guys!

"Whoa! Where'd that scarecrow come from! That is most definitely a crow scaring device! Unless... It's a trap! The crows built it to scare us!" I cautiously approach the straw man, feeling, for all intents and purposes, like a cowardly lion.

I'm going to scan the field around the scarecrow for arcane influences.

But yeah... nothing here depended on a master success. However... the move is now yours.

'Well, this is an entertaining group. The way they're going now, I suppose I'll have to be the eyes of this caravan. Lest we are ambushed or watched.'
I leap from the tree which concealed me and approach silently. I decide it's time to get on with this adventure and reveal myself. I look upon the group which i am to be a part of. Such short statured creatures. Towering at 8'1" most humanoids look like playthings in my midst. Still, I feel great power emanating from this child here. The dwarf is good natured I believe. I'll have to teach him how to walk without crushing every twig beneath his boots. I do love animals. So much easier to talk to than humans by far. They don't run from me. So, I'll get along with her. The metal behemoth carries a similar enchantment as myself. The gleam of eyes within his helmet sends a chill through my straw. Wait....I don't feel chills. What's a chill? *shakes head*
As everyone's back is to me, I kneel behind the childlike sorcerer, the ghost-light from within the Jack-O-Lantern atop my shoulders illuminates him in an eerie glow.
'Pardon me...but, but whatever are you doing? Talking to inanimate objects tends to get one nowhere.'

Post by: Sano Arcanos on December 20, 2012, 10:55:27 AM
Well, I shall dutifully try to describe that... thing... you call a laugh. Just remember. You gave me that power.
Spoiler
A sound echos across the barren field as Morpheus drapes his translucent cloak over the realm. A laughter, in most languages, involves the expulsion of air from the body in a manner to express joy, confidence, or other key moods. This sound could, for one, not be described as "expelled from the body", rather, it originated from the area in which the mysterious stranger stood, and resonated throughout the field. It was a sound that, aside from its origin, was ineffable. Yet, it's effects were not so... merciful.

The sound brings to mind all the fear and sorrow of losing a loved one, the horrors of uncertainty, and the terror of a child as the wind moves the branch ever so gently across the window on a moonlit night. Children cower at night, awaiting the cold embrace of certain death when this sound was heard. Adults contemplate slitting their offsprings' throats to spare them the horrors of meeting the source of the sound. Only the bravest of fools would dare stand before it. It was, for the most part... fuckin' creepy as hell!

Vex swivels her full frame of seven foot six inches around to face the noise, nostrils flaring in alarm, her short sword drawn in anticipation as she takes in the sight of the pumpkin headed creature. Who you calling short Nicoli? I'm 7'9 bitch :p

With a squeak as his jaw opened, Falchion spoke to the newly arrived member.

"Well, that is different. Very different. I assume you are the member his lordship Diaza instructed to meet use here. If you are not, I suggest we make haste to head north. If you are, I suppose introductions are in order. Starting with you."

As the Warforged finished speaking his mouth snapped back loudly. For the first time around the group, the mechanized metal's presence shifted. His seemingly perfect posture shifted (Although, if one is designed to stand perfectly straight, is it really perfect posture?). The giant shook his head in anger, his metal joint clanging around against each other.

Squeak, "Ah, to hell with this infernal squeaking." Falchion reached into his bag, pulled out a pint of oil, and preceded to drink it as he waited on the scarecrow's reply.

Whoops didn't see your post til after mine Sky. Actually, it still kinda works lol. Hope I'm not gonna drop my oil.....

I bring the volume of my "laughter" to a slight chuckle, then it stops.
'I apologize for startling you. I just couldn't help myself, friends. I am a Wandering Scarecrow.'

*Theres a rustle of if straw as i rise to my full height.

'From what ive gathered of my "life", i was created by a nameless old hag. I used to guard a magical artifact known as "The Light", she held so dear to her twisted, diseased heart. Alas, it consumed her tainted soul and vanished from this plane of existence. Freed from her enchantment and tyranny, I set off to build a life for myself. The good Lord found me standing in his private gardens speaking to some birds and contracted my services.  Before I left the witch's hovel, I studied everything that she owned. I'm a formidable  spell caster of great power. I've learned much in my 170 years of existence.

*cocks head to side and back as if twitching*

'Hm...you asked my name. Sadly, I do not know it. I haven't spoken to intelligent humanoids in a long time. I prefer the company of birds. They do not flee in fear of my shape and sound'.

*A sound emenates from the pumkin headed lifeform which could only be described as a sigh, rather a chill wind settles on the company*

'So, my dear friends, it is up to you what you call me for I care not. After my lengthy anecdote I'm prepared to set off for our journey if the rest of you are.'

*more laughter as I pet the head of the young frightened sorcerer*

'Indeed child, The Great Pumpkin is my Lord and protector. My He bless us all with grace and a bountiful harvest'

Your acrobatic score is 2, so you got a 12.

Spoiler
Terrified of the strange and nightmarish visage that had recently violated your sacred space, you vault towards the nearest figure of safety and protection... or rather, the lesser of two frights. You catapult directly into the body of the mechanoid. Your speed catches him off guard, and so you manage to slam into him. However, your momentum is not enough to knock him over, or to even truly rattle him. In short, you smash your face into a metal man's chest.

So, you tied his reflex, so he didn't dodge you, but you didn't match his fortitude, so you didn't shake him. Yay.

The squeaking and snap that usually accompanies the warmonger's words has faded a good bit. He looks down at the child, still drinking the oil when there are pauses in his speech.

Also... in game, you're aware of the fact that you're traveling with a machine and a scarecrow. A dwarf, as well. I'm not sure if Vex has said what he/she is, and I know Mith hasn't... you could be walking next to a fraking black dragon!

I do believe I just looked at Mith, and I have multiple times. So, while I might not be able to say exactly what race he is, I think I could narrow it down to "some form of Elf", or "No way is that thing Human." I am not gonna ask, simply because Falchion has no real reason to care. Also, I thought you wanted us to do less perception checks, hence why I have only done one. I am not gonna ask, simply because Falchion has no real reason to care. Also, I thought you wanted us to do less perception checks, hence why I have only done one. Quote from: Mishafox113;610762I'm not playing this game to do perception and nature and bull shit checks every three posts. Pretty sure in real life I can look over and see I'm walking with a metal thing, a jack o lantern scarecrow and a dwarf. Sadly though since I have no clue what everyone is cant really describe Mith though I'm sure he's a teenaged human.

First, I've asked for one group roll: the Will save. That's it, and it was for a specific reason. All the other rolls I've asked for are rolls specifically for an action some one was trying to take. Most of the time, people are rolling before I even ask for it... I'll reference Taylor's (unnecessary, but appreciated) perception roll a few posts above, and several of Sky's skill rolls. None of the rolls I've asked for are "bullshit rolls".

When I made the comment about rolling perception, I meant something along this line. In real life, you can look around and make sure that the campsite is safe. However, it takes a bit more time and attention to make sure that you're not setting up a tent next to a snake-burrow. Likewise, if someone is HIDING in the woods near you, a cursory glance would not reveal anything. Only doing a good amount of observation and realization would reveal that something is out of order. The rules of D&D embody this amount of observation and realization in the perception skill. You went into the woods, where an unknown person has just disappeared. You didn't know if he had friends, or if he was just a scout. But, you just went into the woods away from the path he took. He could have left someone behind to watch you all.

I bring up the Mith thing because I'm just a bit shocked that no one thought it odd that there were two characters whose race was a mystery. That's all.

Vex narrows her eyes at Falchion as he walks farther down the path. "Ah'm thinking we should find a place off th' beaten path to set up camp. No fire. Don't want t' ruin mah night eyes or alert any unwanted visitors." She then glances at the child with a blank expression, "Stop mopin' and get up small one and prove yourself to us and your master. Keep yourself focused and worry less about....that...candy..things you seem t' go on about."

She then proceeds into the forest away from the small trail the stranger went down to find a suited campsite.

I have not gone into the woods where an unknown stranger just disappeared actually. I have yet to role for the suitable campsite because I'm trying to wait for everyone to post before I just roll and say oh yeah campsite come here or be square.

Time of day was incorporated into the story. First, I said in post #33, "There is no traffic on the road at this time of day, so you are, for all intents and purposes, allow. Off in the distance, you hear the slight call of ravens, signaling the day's death and the evening's birth. From a casual glance, you see no one awaiting you." Later, I said in post #59, "A sound echos across the barren field as Morpheus drapes his translucent cloak over the realm."

I just didn't know it was night, although you did say the Morpheus thing, I just did not realize what he was at the time and even after finding out I did not realize you were being literal. As far as races, Falchion really just does not care, but not it a "Whatever" way. He thinks beings should be known on the basis of their actions.

And I believe Misha is under the impression that we are in a path in the middle of a forest. So if the random guy we saw was on the right of us, she went into the forest on the left.

I thought we were on a path in between a forest and a steep hill.

^that. You went into a forest, when a stranger has recently slipped into the same forest area. He could have been one of the many enemies in the area.

Yea, Vex proceeded away from the forest the stranger went into. Which is why I asked Misha if she thought there was a forest on each side, because her post confused me. She explained the Vex went into the opposing forest, because Misha thought we were already on a path between two separate forests.

Regardless of which side she goes into, there is a very high chance that the shadowy stranger wasn't the only one there. It's exceptionally unlikely that only one person is in the area.

We're setting camp.
In the forest.
Here we go.

i help Vex set up camp. In doing so, I observe my party members. The iron warforged. The beast. The drunken dwarf. As I round my gaze to Mithanos, I ask, 'Young One, of what racial origin are you? I think you may be older than your appearance suggests.'

Just set up camp. I'm not arguing this anymore.
Spoiler
The NIGHT is dark. A crescent moon is in the sky, though clouds from a storm that had come through a few days ago still lingered, causing the light to dim drastically occasionally. A night owl calls in the forest, ready to hunt. Dawn is several hours away, and not even a hint of the rosy aura of the sun's rising is present in the sky. It is dark in the forest and on the trail.

Your party has set up a camp just inside the forest.

I trust all of you fleshlings have some form of bedroll to sleep in. Jack, tell me when four hours have passed. Ill take over for the remaining four hours."

The metal brute finds a nice, sturdy tree, and lowers himself to the ground. His eyes dim from their usual red glow, til they are unable to be seen outside the mask. Sitting there, his back supported by the tree, Falchion quiets his internal systems and retreats back into whatever device functions as his brain.

In order for maximum hilarity, read the secondary boxes after reading the stand alone sentences. Also, everything in the secondary boxes that are in quotation marks ("xyz") can be assumed to have been said out loud... Also, as I think people would rather not have their retina seared with all the red writing, can I just say that, aside from what's said out loud, no one knows what he's thinking? "Mithanos, stop it, and make sure the dwarf is awake. Jack rouse Vex, if she needs it."

The metal joint turn and twist inside his body as the giant returns to his full height. Now that they were well oiled again, the group could not hear them, but Falchion knew exactly what they were doing. He was pleased at the silence of his body.

Spoiler

"The Republic of Verbena is a federation composed of nine different subdivisions - seven Kingdoms and one Province. The capital city of Port Sarvin is in the kingdom of Merkoth, a medium size kingdom on the western coast. North of Merkoth, seperated from it by a river, is the kingdom Bellanon, a small kingdom. Further north of Bellanon is the smallest kingdom, Elunsine, the northern-most kingdom - and the source of the River Elund. East of Elunsine is Ravnarel, the largest and most powerful of the kingdoms. South of Ravnarel is Verreaux, a large kingdom. Venaine is a medium size kingdom south of Verreaux, and is one of only two kingdoms to line the southern coast. The other, Albane, is the second largest kingdom in the Republic. The area in the middle of the entire nation is the small province of Taebarn, which is ruled over by a council, instead of a king or queen.

The government of Verbena is divided into the offices of President (who leads the nation and government), Chancellor (who oversees international affairs), and Prime Minister (who tends to the daily necessities of the nation), in descending order of importance. Traditionally, a leader of one of the kingdoms is elected to an office for a predetermined number of years by the noblemen of the entire nation in an assembly called the Claives. Currently, the President of the Republic is Cestus Dalga, Premier of Taebarn. The Chancellor is King Auldine of Verreaux, and the Prime Minister King Ravinborne of Elunsine. President Cestus's term has, for the first time in history, not been limited.

The area you are in is the southern lands in Bellanon. The area you find yourself in now has always been particularly blessed with a peaceful existence. However, its inhabitants have not. The Elundari are exiled beast-men from Elunsine. No one is sure as to why they were exiled, but they keep this area under their control with blessings from all the heads of the kingdoms and the province, including the king of Elunsine himself. The Elundari are descended from legendary warriors from the Tribal Lands far to the East," I narrate dutifully as if repeating the words a voice whispered to me.

"Also... I'm hungry!" I then proceed to stroll off a few feet in the woods to take care of a little issue.

You break out of the forest and back onto the road. Several dozen yards ahead, you find what could be the origin of the mysterious music. A little girl is sitting on a large rock on the side of the road, strumming a lute careful and humming a tune, trying to make the two tones match.

As a child, she's not particularly remarkable - average height and size, typical youthful face, your ordinary tail and wolf ears, commonplace clothes, a random pile of childhood treasures like "cool" rocks and toys next to her... wait... tail?

Your party, slightly confused about the recent encounter with the little wolf-girl, continues down the road. Several miles later, you break free from the dense forest and arrive at the outskirts of a village sitting safely in a plain-like area. The buildings around you are made of a strange mixture of wood and stone, as if the people had just recently decided to make a permanent settlement of the area. In the distance, you see a massive ziggarat towering over the landscape. Several people are walking the roads and streets between buildings surrounding the structure. The sun is midway on its rise to the sky's throne. It is late morning. Your approach does not go unnoticed, though. Already, a group of armed men are making their way towards you, a familiar individual occasionally peeking out from behind the central guard. It appears that the little wolf-girl made it back before you arrived.

Deciding to be diplomatic in my approach, I first bow to the head of the group before addressing them. "Beautiful Tail! Thank goodness you made it safely! When my thoughtless friend frightened you into the woods, I had feared the worst! Gentlemen, please, I assure you no harm was meant. Our group is an odd one, for sooth and certain, but we are in no way dangerous to your humble homes. As you can see, for all intents and purposes, I'm the only, how should I put this... ah... normal one, in our party. With a man made of metal; a walking, talking scarecrow; a powerfully built... creature of indeterminate gender... and a dwarf who's sole accomplishment thus far in our journey has been standing upright, it is a rather... intimidating presence we exude. But rest assured, we mean you no harm. As a token of good will... I'll even burn part of the mean old scarecrow that frightened our lovely lass here. How about his leg? It's terribly mildewed anyway." I offer with my best and most winning smile. As a show of good faith, I ignite a small flame in my hand and await their decision.

The guards lower their spears and swords, and the one who appears to be the leader approaches Mithanos. "Your words do you credit, child. You speak with the learning - and fanciness - of an elder. There's no need for your strawman to burn. Your... metallic menace," he casually glances towards Falchion and his falchion,"on the other hand, should learn some of those fancy words. Elony told us of a monster approaching the village. Typically, we wouldn't think of this as a threat, but Elony has never been one to exaggerate, and given the recent issues with the border... we'd rather not take chances. From where do you travel, strangers? For you to be going to the Elund Springs... you've got a thousand miles at least ahead of you..." The captain of the guards says with an inflection that suggests that he is suspicious of your supposed destination. "However, you're welcome to stay the night here in our village, provided you keep your... companions under control. The village of the Elundari is at your disposal."

As a point of order, just because I'm not sure if Liam actually intends to go to the source of the river because he thought that's where you were supposed to go, or if he was trying to lie to the guards, but either way, you're looking for a gem called the Heart of the Elundari in the temple of the Elundari. Okay, let me just clarify this real quick. What they think of as the "source of the River Elund" and what you think of as the "source of the River Elund" may be two different things. Don't get too thrown off just yet... ;) Remember, these are tribal people; source could mean any number of things: a spring, a god, a giant rock from which all cheese arose...

Recently, the Elders and the Alpha have decided to settle down here, and we're building our village a little at a time. In fact, if you look over yonder, you'll see the Temple of Aurast being built." He directs your attention to the ziggurat on the other side of the village, which is about halfway constructed. He releases a weary sigh and shakes his head. "It is a hard job, but once we are done, we will have rest and safety for the rest of our lives." The solider he sent returns. "Ah, good. The Alpha himself will house you tonight! Come!" He leads your party through the streets of the village. As you walk, your have a strange sense that something isn't right. Just so everyone can enjoy this, Nicoli made a random comment about rolling an "Arcana check on everything". This is what he could have learned.

"Five thousand miles away, in the glittering obsidian tower of Blackwatch, the Archmage of the Warsor armies is preparing a spell to shave. Five thousand and one miles away, in the shimmering ivory tower of Whitewatch, the Archmage of the Warsor armies is preparing a spell to bake his delicious chicken potpie. Three hundred miles from your current location, a man is currently using Prestidigitation for a purpose it was not intended for. Spoiler alert, he'll need a doctor later. The beetle on the flower next to your foot once contemplated casting a magic spell... but then realized that it had had a thought, and decided to dedicate its life to contemplating how it had managed a thought in the first place. This is quite difficult, as you can imagine, as beetles cannot think."

Moral of the story... don't be TOO general with what you're checking. Otherwise, you might wet your self and fall off of a bar-stool laughing.

Noting the departure of the ridiculous automaton and the alcohol-infused dwarf, I follow the captain diligently. Leaning back towards the towering fur-beast and the scarecrow, I whisper, "Some strange spell is over this entire area. The source seems to be coming from the temple. It's making these people... stay here. And, I'm pretty sure it's trapped us too..."

As you enter the hut, you are struck immediately by a sense of something being both right, and wrong. Across from the door, in the center of the hut, is the fire pit. A low glow of embers is visible, though the hut proper is lit by light coming in from the pit's opening in the roof and various windows. Directly opposite of you, sitting on a slightly raised mat, is the Alpha of the Elundari tribe. He is remarkably young compared to the others you've seen around the village - at most, he might be pushing thirty. Long, ebony hair is pulled back into a tail which hangs midway down his back. He wears a simple leather vest and trousers. A single scar runs down his chest diagonally, crossing right over his heart. Eyes the color of autumn grass flick up towards you as you enter, before returning to the object of their greater interest. The Alpha is sitting slightly hunched over, gently stroking the equally dark, albeit slightly shorter, hair of a little boy, curled up in his lap, snoozing softly, his small torso swelling and collapsing in the gentle tempo of death's younger brother.

After a few moments of silence, the Alpha looks up at your party and speaks softly, "Welcome, travelers. Please, make yourselves comfortable. One of the womenfolk will be by shortly with meat and drink."

As you settle in the hut, you begin to look around. There are several shelves filled with various earthware jars of herbs and roots, as well as several odd stones and gems of some value, though the way they are strewn about suggest little concern about their worth. A particularly dangerous looking spear is resting against one shelf, along with a powerful bow and a quiver of deadly arrows, though that seems to be the only part of the hut remotely organized. In all reality... the place looks more like a bachelor's pad than the hut of what would equate to a village chief.

"G-ggwow?" a soft, whimpering growl breaks the silence in the hut as the small bundle in the Alpha's lap squirmed before sitting up and sleepily rubbing his bleary eyes. The left eye shines like the sun, molten gold in color. The other shimmers like the moon, burnished silver in color. Slowly, he settles his eyes onto your party before sniffling softly and violently clinging to the Alpha. "O-oke! Nana oke! Hakiti li nan oke!" the boy whimpers into the Alpha's chest. Softly, the Alpha strokes the child's hair and whispers soft words of reassurance to him. Once the boy settles down, the Alpha nuzzles his hair softly and returns his attention to you.

"My pup has had nightmares for days now. Most of the time, he can't remember them, but a few of the times, he wakes up crying like this."

A few mumbled words escape the child, and the Alpha smiles and mumbles something back. "He seems to think that you are all bad people who are going to take him away, like in his dream. Not likely, considering you're here for an entirely different reason. I take it you're the 'or else' that Diaza mentioned in his last... negotiation?"

The Alpha's form is extremely tense now. His eyes glance over you all carefully before returning to the still whimpering child. "Elf-boy. Be careful what you say in here. Despite how... unexpectedly polite you've all been, I assure you if my guards detect the slightest threat to me or Teki, you will be slaughtered. The fact that you are hearing voices leads me to believe that you might be some danger to my village. However, you've shown no ill intent, and I'll forgo any... cautionary measures. Teki's eyes are a gift from Aurast himself, a sign of his destiny and purpose." Again, the Alpha's hand makes several soothing strokes on the boy's head. Suddenly, a muffled voice comes from the Alpha's chest. He chuckles and shakes his head.

"Teki would also like to know which of you smells funny. I'm not entirely sure what he means, but I assume he's referring to you," the Alpha points to Jack. A few more mumbles, and the Alpha hugs the boy and shakes his head.

"No, they're not going to take you away. They're friendly.. a bit strange, but friendly. Aren't you?" he glares at your party. Then, as if he already knew the answer, he turns the boy around and sits him on his lap. Smiling, he leans down and nuzzles Teki's cheek before resting his chin on top of his head.

"Teki yentspi saru nae saeosin." The Alpha grins at you.

The little boy stares wide eyed at all of you for a few minutes before nervously mumbling "Saru..."

The Alpha smiles fondly at you. "As I have answered his... Excellency... the gem is not ours to give. Our very existence is tied to the stone. No amount of gold or threats could pry the Heart from my grasp. And beyond that, a man like Diaza must certainly never have it. The Heart has powers you cannot begin to imagine. I am sorry, friends, but your journey here was... wasted. I will see to arrangements for you to leave as soon as possible. It is best that you don't stay much longer, least it notice you. There is another who has been waiting a while for transport out of our home. I'll send you with him. Guards, fetch the stranger," Scratching the child's head, he sighed. "Say good-bye to our guests, Teki."

Suddenly, the little boy seems to have been struck by pure insanity. He rapidly starts babbling in their native tongue and pointing wildly at various things, all while vilolently clinching his father's vest in his other hand. Occasionally, he shakes the Alpha. His rambling suddenly stops, and he looks at the man holding him and nods. "Nana saru salash. Oke." He nods firmly, and the Alpha sighs.

"Apparently, it is a bit late for you to leave. In that case, I have a favor to ask of you. As you may have noticed... our people are in a bit of a rut. To be more precise... we've been repeating the same few weeks for... a long while. I see a solution for at least one of our mutual problems. While building the temple a long time ago... there was an issue in the inner chamber. Something went horribly wrong, and a spell was unleashed against our people. We have need of those not of our tribe to travel through the temple and... correct the issue. It will require some skill, and... certainly, some amount of arcane prowess... It will be dangerous, as well... An excellent reason to get that other traveler involved. Ah, here he is!" The door swings open, and a pale wraith-like figure strides in. Hair black as a moonless night, and skin as white as the moon, the figure exudes a sense of cold about himself. The guards beside him are shivering ever so slightly. "Scarecrow, child, and gnoll, may I introduce Nil."

"Why--hello.  I wasn't expecting such a rabble upon my arrival today."  Upon entry, Nil stared at the newcomers, fingering a stray tuft of black hair glittered around his high, pointed ears.  He eyed them coldly, even condescendingly.  As he looked toward them, he began to fidget slightly with his sleeve.  What looked to be a half-elf, a scarecrow(!?), and a wolf...thing...lovely.  "I truly apologize.  I'm sure, by now, that you're aware of some of this situation.  I've been stuck here...for some time--how long, I have no idea.  Nevertheless, it is very nice to meet you--I'm Nil."

Nil bowed elegantly, curling his right hand before him in a gesture that could almost be described as something eccentric.  As he stood upright, he glanced to the Alpha.  "Has there been any improvement?  Have the nightmares ceased at all?"

"I am afraid not, fair healer. If anything, they've grown worse," the Alpha explains. "I was just about explain the issue to the newcomers. I think, perhaps, we finally have a chance to end this." Shifting the boy so that he was more comfortably settled, he turns his full attention to the group.

"Our people venerate the glorious Aurast, champion of the battle of the sun and sea, above all of Yosei Aval-Nueki, Thorusan's children. Our temple is dedicated to him, but before it was consecrated, Necoc Yaolt, the Enemy of Both Sides, caused one of the sanctification spells to go... wrong. Instead of setting the temple off as a place of high honor, it set the entire village off as a place of temporal distinction. A fancy way of saying we're stuck in the past. All that needs to be done is to complete the ritual. Sadly, our high priest is elderly and incapable of traversing the deadly place that the temple has become. However, he has prepared the appropriate rituals and consecration oils, so any capable of understanding the complexities of the rituals would be able to perform it. All that remains is to recite the ritual and pour the oil on the altar. And, I know for a  fact that our good healer here knows several rituals," the Alpha explains calmly as he gently runs his fingers through Teki's hair.

"Part of my pup's distress is the temple. He is very connected to the high places. A spiritualist is born every generation in our tribe, and as you can see, he is particularly in tune with the divine realms. The massive distortion of spiritual energy has, it's my understanding, caused him no end in troubling dreams. If you were to consecrate the temple, the spell would resolve, and the spiritual energies would dissipate. My pup would be able to sleep at night, the temporal distortion would resolve, and you could leave."

The Alpha pauses for a moment before shaking his head. "My apologies. I totally skimmed over your question, though so few ever ask my name, I, for a moment, forgot my own name. I am Tekan son of Tekai, father of Teki, raeyar of Jaeli, who returned to Thorusan, Aval-Nueki, Yosei long ago. Might I inquire as to your scents?"

He will be... quite unhappy about our failure. As for little Teki, what exactly makes him a spiritualist? Does that have anything to do with his eyes, or is that just a side effect?"

Softly, I lean over to the scarecrow and very, very, exceptionally softly whisper "Be careful what you look for. You might not like what you find." Then, I demonstrate my abilities to the scarecrow, and him alone.

Tekan gently shuffled the boy off of his lap and stood, stretching. "I'll happily give you these, however, as a reward." He collects various gems and jewels and drops them into a leather pouch. "It should be a considerable sum. As for Teki... well, his mother was from a family of many spiritualists. There are powerful mages amongst them, and several are more than capable of manipulating you with words alone. Do not give in to their wiles. And finally, it is important that you not enter the temple at night. Their powers are greatest then. You may rest now. In the morning, you'll be guided to the temple entrance. Any more questions?" Teki yawns loudly in a comically adorable manner, stretching his tongue out a good two inches from his mouth and curling it before lashing it back and licking his sharp teeth - the right front of which was missing.
The Alpha stretches again and stoops to pick up the boy. "Are you sleepy again, loveling?" The boy nods blearily. Tekan smiles softly and carries him to a fur pallet in the corner of the room. Right about the time he places the sleepy boy's form on the pallet, the door opens again and a young woman walks in carrying a large pot of rich smelling stew. Eyeing the pot of stew longingly, I momentarily consider declining the metal man's request. After all... at one point, he had threatened to cut my head off if I touched him... and I did touch him... maybe he was about to follow through with that threat. But, on the other hand... did metal men have that long of a memory span? Plus, I had been wondering where the hell the dwarf had gotten off to... And there were guards, so I wouldn't be completely isolated. And it wasn't like we could leave anyway... so...

Casting one last longing glance at the stew, I nod, stand, and follow the metal man. Maybe Vex would leave a little for me...

Startled by the door, he peered toward the source of the commotion.  A tall metallic...thing...had appeared.  He eyed it warily and listened to it as it spoke.

Spoiler
The night passes uneventfully for you all, but as you awake and reconvene by the Alpha's hut, you find that the guards are all... dead. The door is open, and within, you see the Alpha panting aggressively, ramming a spear a foot deep into a dying, monstrous half-man, half-wolf creature's chest -a  foe who was at least twice his size. Blood splattered across his face, the normally handsome face transformed into a terrifyingly demonic visage of pure primal rage. After ten or twelve brutal stabs, the Alpha's face relaxed, and the blood-color drained from his eyes. Cautiously, he licked his lips clean of the beast's blood. Glancing towards you, he chuckled nervously. "Sorry about that..." he coughs slightly. A soft whimper immediately draws all of your attentions. Teki is sitting on the pallet you last saw him on, whimpering softly and watching his father. Tekan smiled, and leaping over the massive monster and stooping to scoop up Teki.
"Shh... shh... kunuki... shh..." he makes soothing noises. Teki starts to giggle slightly and reaches for a few strands of Tekan's blood-soaked hair. Tekan shook his head and brushed the strands away from Teki's reach. "Ah ah ah! Kunuki sasa nuyake, Teki!" he chided playfully. Teki laughed and began clapping his hands, "Oke yaka! Oke yaka!" Sitting the boy down on the pallet again, Tekan turns to you.
"There's been a slight... issue. The creatures attacked this morning, and most of our warriors were wounded or killed. We had intended to send in a few guards with you, so that they could point out some traps and such... but the few that are left are needed here. However," Tekan turns and picks up a large leather sack. "Yokan prepared the ritual last night... a good thing, as he was one of the first targets of the attack. Yokan has returned to Thorusan, Yosei, Aval-Nueki. As has... several others. Here," he hands the sack to Nil, "Take great care with that... we can't replace it."
"The entrance to the temple is open, courtesy of this," he delivers a violent kick that causes several dozen bones to audibly shatter, "bastard. I'll personally stand guard at the entrance to await your return. Good luck."

The temple entrance awaits you.

The alpha takes your hand and grips. It appears he is about to speak, but a woman wearing strange fur garments comes running and shouting towards you. Tekan turns to her just as she slams into him. Jumping back with a start, she starts furiously apologizing and bowing.
"Maeyst, please, there is not much time. Why has the priesthood sent you?" he asks, his voice just twinged with annoyance. She shoves a fur-wrapped bundle into his arms and runs back to the village.
"A strange one... but a good candidate for the priesthood. Let's see..." he  unwraps the bundle, "Oh! Oh of course, brilliant! Here, Falchion. Take this. In our native tongue it is called Palla Sa'salym, which, loosely translated, means Flames Which Burn Away to the Truth. Many traps and encounters in the temple are based on our priesthood's abilities to construct illusions. This sword can burn away the illusions when thrust into them... including those that the enemies within might have constructed. It is a sacred treasure, but as we cannot send anyone in with you... it is the best hope. Please, do not let it fall into the enemies hands, and return it when you have finished. Good luck, my friends."

Enkidu, add one (1) Ritual of the Elundari to your ritual list. Falchion, add one Palla Sa'salym to your weapons list. Palla Sa'salym has the following stats:

Attack: 2d4 fire damage
Prof.:+3
Enchantments:

At Will; Standard
Once per turn outside of an encounter (fight): you make a saving throw against an illusion or what you expect to be an illusion with +5 mod.

Encounter; Standard
Once per encounter (fight) you can use this ability:
Make a saving throw against an illusion or what you suspect to be an illusion. If you succeed and it is an illusion, the next attack you make against the target before the end of your next turn has a +5 attack and damage bonus.

The entrance to the temple is rather plain, honestly. When you first arrived, it had been almost perfectly completed, with many primitive, but artistic works. However, now, you see that only the skeletal structure of the ziggurat has been constructed. Very little to any artistic or cultural garnish has been applied to the structure yet, and the top of the temple seems roughly constructed, at best. In fact, it looks as if the temple was just about done with construction, but just beginning the decoration process. at the base of the steps leading up to the entrance of the large stone structure, a pair of powerfully carved stone warriors stand on plinths. As you make your way up the long path of stairs, you notice the steps seem to be aging slightly the further up you go. At the landing several hundred feet above the ground, you arrive at the actual temple. A row of towering columns hold up the awning, and beneath it, you find the entrance, safely guarded by two more stone soldiers. Each soldier wields a stone carved spear pointing from their hands down to the ground. The spearheads rest soundly within special indentures in the stone, and the shafts cross through metal braces on the doorways, locking them from the outside. You have arrived at the temple of the Elundari.

There's a soft gush of air, and a rustling of fabric as something collapses on the ground. Slowly, an individual begins to fade into existence. It appears to be a member of the Elundari, though the face has been so badly damaged by the spear that it's hard to tell much of anything. It is a female, and it is dressed in brown cloth. Her hand is extended towards Mithanos, and a simple, yet deadly dagger is resting in her limp appendage. She is dead.

Ohy my lord, I look away for a few hours and you two have a full on conversation... yes, sort of to limit arguments. In a battle, where everyone contributes equally, loot is generally split between the party members. In a pre-staged battle where no actual conflict occurs, those who deal the killing blow should, by right, have claim to the spoils. If I didn't say that, then while you're rifling through the corpse's possessions, Liam might find it offensive that you're taking what he views as his property.

Nil stopped abruptly.  His heart accelerated, and he gripped the tome slung over his shoulder hard enough for his knuckles to turn white.  A bead of sweat trickled from his forehead onto the floor of the temple.  Was he turning an even paler shade of white?

He bent so that he was eye level with the child and got very close to his face, a vicious glare protruding through his panic.  He whispered something in return, but he then stood upright, took a deep breath and seemed to regain his composure.  He then leaned in and whispered something else, peering sternly into Mithanos's eyes.

I'm here, Liam. The bio department have discovered a source of free and - to them, unending - energy: slave labor. But, aye, on with the story.

Spoiler
As your party makes its way into the temple, you find that the structure was built like a labyrinth. You arrive in a room from which five hallways lead out of, with you standing in one of the five. On the floor, you see four massive stone concentric circles. The outermost circle is divided into four parts, each one labeled with either a tree, a stone, a flame, and a spring. The second outer circle is divided into two parts, one marked with a sun and the other with a moon. The third circle is divided into five portions, with signs that you can vaguely translate into numbers - 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5. The inner most circle has a large podium on it. The room is lit by an opening in the ceiling, from which a powerful beam of light is allowed entrance. There is no one you can see in the room.

And, for everyone's general good playing, I hereby, by the power invested in me, award unto ye mine players, the following summary of rewards:
500exp each.
Yeah... so... don't blow it all in one place...

"This podium is enchanted. We need the keys to activate whatever the mechanism is, I'm assuming. These hallways must lead somewhere. And you can bet the keys are not going to be lying on a platter awaiting us. They're sure to be guarded."

Mithanos chuckles as the silly scarecrow seem to walk into a wall. "There's something here, Mr. Strawman!" he calls out. Looking at the podium, he  grins and starts messing around with it. He begins by moving the little green stone and placing it to the side, before running his finger along the smooth, shiny surface of the first ring in the podium. "There are some instructions... I think. They sound instructive... I guess... Listen."

"Trouble me not with your diamonds and pearls,
But leave to me the treasures of the natural world,
Earth, deep and strong, holds all that it keeps,
Fire so hot, yet burns not with its heat,
Wood from the forests, strong though they sway,
Water, the healer, takes all pains away

My storeroom aplenty with water ye'll know,
My tomb ye shall find ablaze and aglow,
My chambers in the third hall remains,
My treasury in its wealth the earth does contain,
My realm ye have come from, the wood here rests.

Secret is the way from here to the rest,
The rings hold the clue, the hallways, the rest,
Shift the room and the halls will remain,
Though the barriers against may very well change.

Hide from the sun
And dance with the moon,
Take a key with you,
but return it soon.

To enter my chambers, leave gems behind,
Bring not through my doorway these treasures divine,
My ways are secret, but here lies the path,
That which is first in my presence, in my past, is last."

Mithanos scratches his head before smiling. "It's a riddle! I love a good riddle! Okay, I got some stuff... Like Mr. Strawman said, we need keys. These rocks are the keys," he holds up the green rock. "If we put the right rock in the spot on the pedestal, it will activate some mecahnism that will affect the hallways. From what I can gather, if we put a rock into this small wheel up here, then turn it to where it faces a hallway, if it is the opposite of the gem hidden inside the hallway, something will happen and we'll be able to get into it. But, there's this part about hiding with the sun and dancing with the moon that I don't get. Any ideas?"

He places the green stone in the wheel and turns it so that it faces the hallway that matches the symbol that stands for 1.

So, what I'm guessing is that, each of these halls has a number, and the numbers match up with their opposites, if we ignore the one that doesn't have anything in it (the "chambers"). Of course, I could be wrong.

About time... alright...
Spoiler
As your party passes through the green barrier, a strange sound lightly flits through the hallway's air, as if some fragile glass shattered rooms away. A soft brush of wind causes your lighter clothing to ruffle slightly. The hallway is well lit with narrow, tall windows all the way down the route. Sunlight is pouring in, and if you look outside of the windows, you see the beginnings of a village at the base of the temple.

The hallway is long and narrow -about ten feet wide. Despite the light pouring in from the windows, after about thirty feet, the visibility in the hallway drastically falls - mainly due to the sharp turn, but also partially because of the dust in the air. The hallway itself is lined with rich blue carpet and painted with deep blue and green shades and motifs of rivers and springs.
