This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Pathfinder Beginner Box game

Inspired by E6 and someone here who described a basic box only game, I'm going to run a game using only the Pathfinder Beginner Box, stopping advancement at level 5. The format is going to be Post-Apocalyptic Sandbox Dungeoncrawl. Bad stuff went down on the surface and most survivors are underground. The group will be exploring the underworld looking for a new life. I'll be trying to capture the sense of wonder of the old basic set with a bit of the gonzo of gamma world.

I'll throw in the free add ons for the box, some feats for post-level 5, rituals, and a handful other feats and that's it. It's going to be a combo of pbp and virtual table top, with much of the non-combat in pbp and regular vtt sessions every other week. If you have Pathfinder but not the beginner box, you'll be fine.

I'm going with Infrno for the virtual table top because it's simple to use and has an ok range of features. It's free and browser based so you don't need anything to set up and it's easy to load images of monsters and maps and anyone in the game can do so. You can type or use voice, whatever you'd rather do. It also has a built in dice roller. I'm not married to Infrno if anyone has a better free option.

Here's the flavor text:

Magic is in the air. Literally. And it's not all good magic. It causes wounds, mutations, and baldness, with occasional obliterating storms. A year ago, a group of silver elf conjurers tried to summon magic itself. They succeeded with results far greater than they anticipated. And far worse.

The elves intended to have a level of magic 50 feet off the ground that could be tapped into. They miscalculated and now the atmosphere from 50' above sea level upwards is infused with magic. The vast majority of land is well above 50' above sea level.

Pasd was a typical low to mid-fantasy world prior to the summoning. Pieced together from magical communication, it seems that nearly 90% of the population was destroyed. Areas not immediately affected were overwhelmed by the initial wave of mutants. At least it got almost all of the elves responsible. Coastal towns and underground communities fared the best. It's been figured out that a layer or gold or lead or a foot or more of stone block out most of the harmful magic. Pasd is now a world of people hugging the coast and pockets of civilization deep underground. Travel and communication between pockets of life require heroic action. The world has changed so much in the last year it is practically a blank slate.

You are alive because you were able to seek sanctuary in Basalt Hall, the underground fortress of the Dwarven clan Bruikjon. The clan has decided that it can no longer afford to keep refugees and that a year far exceeds the expectations of being a good host. Tomorrow, you and all other non-clan members will be expelled to make your way as best you can. You are in the group that has decided that the best option is in the tunnel network that links to the Shaft and many caves. With effort and skill, you might be able to find a new home. With luck, you won't be seeing the surface any time soon.
