This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

(Interest) SWN Summer Campaign

Mr. Kent

I love Stars Without Number, but my attempts to enjoy it at some other rpg forum didn't go so well. I'm interested in running a game here if anyone's interested, player-driven sandboxy goodness.

I think it would be a good experience to run a limited campaign over the summer with an endpoint in sight.

I have SWN's full core book (mechs! AI!) and all supplements except Suns of Gold. I also have Other Dust to pull material from (thanks to the good ol' Bundle of Holding). As long as you have the core book you'd be okay.

I had two possible concepts--Covert Ops themed hijinks using Darkness Visible, and scientific adventures with lots of deadly pretech and maltech. I'm starting to like the idea of combining them, too.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

My thoughts are "Yay!"

I have the SWN bundle, so I am ready to go. Between the idea of covert ops and mythic archeology, a la Indiana Jones, I sorta lean towards the latter. However if you throw in Andromeda Syndrome links between the two I'd be happy like a pig in shit.

I wanna play a Dr. Doreen Boyle from 'Helix'! I'm gonna be a straight shootin' medical researcher filled with Southern sass and charming colloquialisms!

You know, people keep comparing non-TSR D&D to deck-building in Magic: the Gathering. But maybe it\'s more like Katamari Damacy. You keep sticking shit on your characters until they are big enough to be a star.

Drohem

I would like to play.  I will probably play a warrior type character.

Mr. Kent

Nice! I'll start generating some basic setting details. The PCs could be running their own mini Perimeter Agency, hunting down tech...

I'd love to play anything in SWN, but Play by Post is an unfamiliar format for me and I don't want to bog things down with my ignorance. Would it be a problem?

Mr. Kent

No, not at all! Perfectly fine if you're new to play-by-post. I'll do my best to make it a good start for you.

I created a Dice Room at this dice rolling site called Stars Without Number.  Feel free to use it too if you want. :)

Alright, I'll keep an eye on this thread and my private messages to know where and when I should show up.

Mr. Kent

I'll have setting details this weekend! If anyone would like to start working out a character feel free - I like the Dice Room Drohem linked to and will likely use that for my own rolls. If anyone would rather wait til this weekend to make their character that's fine too.

Let's do 4d6 straight, drop the lowest
STR, INT, WIS, DEX, CON, CHA

A preview: Names generated thus far for my pool of worlds are Qetesh, Shaddai, and Waldo

I'll wait to generate. It'll probably be an expert with whatever skills are needed.

Are you going to use the rule fixes Sine Nomine (the writer) has discussed on this forum?

Slight and petite, but ends up mothering everyone anyway as she was the eldest of six kids. A heavily idiomatic Southern belle who took charm school but couldn't finish as the family grew too big. Raised her male brothers, and more than a few cousins too, several of whom ended up in Waldo prisons because in their youth they gave lip to authorities. Can fit in with the crass, but tries to bring in some class, so can switch from easy going to prude on a dime.

Lived on Qetesh with its domed cities. Would often sneak out with family for a hoedown, or hunting, or checking on bootleg stills and crops in the wilderness where the ruins are. Often had to rescue kinfolk from tech dangers during these outings as Jo-jo was one of the few who was literate as well as technically inclined.

Got noticed by the good doctor and now has a right stable job, enough to send even a bit back to kin.

===  DESCRIPTION  ===

He is a proud 39-year old human male of Russian ethnicity.  He has dirty blonde hair that is cropped high and tight, and he has a trimmed mustache and goatee that has reddish color peppered with a few white hairs.  He stands at 6'3" tall and weighs a solid 235 pounds.  He has pale blue eyes that are grey at times.

===  BACKGROUND  ===

Commander Aleksandr Turov has recently retired from a 20-year career as a line Marine Officer in the Navy.  He served with distinction and was honorably discharged after his lengthy service.  He quickly found that the retired life that he had envisioned during his service did not live up to his expectations and he found it very sedentary and boring.  After a short time of fun and recreation he decided that he needed to work at something again otherwise he would become a drunk, fat, and lazy.  He searched for something that would bring him joy and he settled on investing in a gun shop and shooting range with an old Navy friend.  Unfortunately, his partner has unwittingly purchased illegal weapons and the business was seized by the government after an audit.  He and his partner lost everything and became broke after paying for legal fees to avoid jail.  He has his freedom and was cleared of any illegal wrongdoing but his retirement dream has been shattered and he now finds himself in the position of needing to find work immediately.  He knows what type of work he needs to find with his highly specialized skill set and he is actually good with looking for dangerous work since it's the one thing that truly brings him joy and fulfillment because he a man of action at heart.

Re:Rules Fixes -- If you could point me towards them I'm pretty sure I will ~ I think I missed those.

Jo-jo and the Commander are looking pretty good, and also sound like an awesome 80s cartoon! (I was watching He-Man this morning, so its the first thing I thought of...)
