Next to New Graveyard, down mountain

Walking past this new graveyard along its side honing in on the insistent cry, Hanalee & Caden notice that this place just does not feel as tranquil like the Old Graveyard. Actually, to Hanalee and Bright Feather, you feel a passing vertigo. Alric looks visibly wan — a wave of nausea goes through you. Karnath looks like she's about to snap someone's head off; a throbbing & scraping whine runs through your head, leaving you to grind your teeth to temper the tension. Karnath, you are the last to recover, it taking a half minute to pass. The sensation is now gone even while all of you still have some graveyard to pass.

Continuing on to where the grade starts to steepen the cry becomes more clear, and obviously shrill. It unsettles your stomach, Bright Feather, something is wrong; it absolutely chills you, Karnath, that baby is in danger! Karnath, you cannot wait any longer, and actively go forth to those baby's cries, searching.
----------------

Karnath

Oh my god, a cradle fallen upon the ground near a large rock! A native Shoshone woman collapsed, unconscious?, right next to it all, flower basket upturned, young felt sage leaves spilling forth. You naturally rush to check upon her and the baby — a face you just saw minutes ago! Two puncture wounds upon her wrist...

*rattling*

/you freeze, a chill up your spine.

*rattling*

Close... too close, but where?
------------

Everyone Else Present

You respond a moment apace from Karnath's sudden dash. But you come to a weird scene that seizes you about 15' away: upturned baby in a cradle, crying madly; a limp female form before a large rock; Karnath absolutely stock-still; young sage leaves tumbling past the scene, some swirling in little whirls.

In that moment of hesitation, softly you hear death... *rattle*

You know, people keep comparing non-TSR D&D to deck-building in Magic: the Gathering. But maybe it\'s more like Katamari Damacy. You keep sticking shit on your characters until they are big enough to be a star.

Karni:  1D20+2 =>   4  if initiative - terrible roll, bleh. She is looking to see if she can find the snake, yet at a safe distance to not get bit. If she sees it, she will cast Command for it to leave. Spell attack +6 - Karni:  1D20+6 =>   18 on a DC14.

OOC: Roll Perception again, as if Advantage. You're extremely close, and the creature is giving off a deliberate tell. It's just not in immediate sight.

Further, you would know that Command requires the creature to understand your language used. Retroactively save your spell and choose something else. Good luck! :)

Perception roll: Karni:  1D20 =>   11

Not sure what to do, sans command, maybe thaumaturgy to hit the ground around it to scare it off.

OOC: Not knowing what to do is honest. Perhaps a round of contemplation?

The sound is coming closest by the large rock to your immediate right, lower down. It is also midway between you and the baby cradle, you would guess either of you within striking distance. That's an adult you can tell, yet the colorations are unfamiliar to you. It is coiled, possibly afraid?, but who knows for how long. The baby's cries aren't helping.

Your conscious mind recovered and remembered hearing the follow up steps of your friends. They came to an abrupt stop, likely a mere 10' away directly behind you. Perhaps you better use this moment to get a message to them before they too get in danger... but with how loud a voice can you use?

Karni holds up her hand, "Snake!" To warn everyone else.

OoC: How big is it? IRL, armored plus shield and mace, I'd just hit it; I've shoo'd them away with brooms when I lived in West Texas, don't know about in game though. If it is important, or the baby looks threatened, Karni will act.

Caden will attempt to distract the snake by moving to the other side of it, hopefully drawing it away from the direction of the baby.

OOC: Easily over 3' long. Trouble is unpredictability and it'll get essentially first strike. Yes, Karnath would likely act as anyone within striking distance is in danger, but how -- as it is still life -- is the question. Not an alignment test, but it is something to consider.

The snake rears back from Karnath's sudden hand movement (even though I naturally assume it is your left hand, currently furthest away), yet doesn't strike. Caden's flanking it's last escape route, creating a hemisphere between where it is and the rocks, and you are guessing this is really making it afraid. You are beginning to see the value of a cradleboard binding a child quite still, even as the baby screams bloody murder.

The scene from down mountain on up is: Karnath next to the out woman, then the cradleboard, finally Caden closing the last escape by the large rock. The snake seems to make for the path of least resistance: the baby between you and Caden. But each time it rests its jaw on the ground and the baby wails, it stops and recoils.

How fast do each of you feel? Or will you plan something else.

OOC: Passive Medicine for Karnath, rapid shallow breathing from the unconscious woman now. She will need treatment very soon. Her arm is ballooning. She *should* live, if you can get her treatment.

If the snake is going for the baby, she'll cast sacred flame on it and move in for an attack.

Caden will hold off for fear of further agitating the snake. He will remain as still as he possibly can.

If Bright Feather sees the snake she shouts "over HERE" to get it's attention and uses Ray of Frost on it. Roll to hit 17 + 6= 23. While waving and shouting to the snake..."c'mon bastard!".. using her 35 ft movement in a circular diagonal to draw the snake's attention (given it's not going to be able to move because of RoF's secondary effect).
Don\'t mess with cats we kill wizards in one blow.;)

Mr. Kent

Hanalee draws her longbow and aims at the serpent, taking fire when she has a clear shot.

(Rolled 18 before modifiers in the dice room--on my phone so post editing skills are lacking at the moment)

OOC: Poor snake. It will likely not survive the round, but it does go fast. Would you all like to roll your initiative before acting frantically, or shall I?

Caden will sit this round out for fear of getting in the way, he doesn't really have a ranged weapon and isn't comfortable throwing his dagger this close to an infant.
