OOC: This was a random encounter that expanded upon another random encounter, so it was not intended to be overly involved. For brevity, I hope Bright Feather & Hanalee don't mind if I just roll their initiative and damage to keep things moving.

I'll go alphabetically. Rolled 13 & 14 in room. Snake initiative, target, & attack also in room.
Bright Feather = 15 (13+2). Hanalee = 15 (14+1). Karnath = 8 (6+2). Caden sits out. Alric ??

Hanalee, you notice your Longbow remains a Small Crossbow, much to your dissatisfaction. It will have to suffice. ;)

Several people begin attacks, talking, moving, and waving their hands, and the snake obviously freaks. Striking like a flash it lunges towards Karnath before anyone else can get an attack off. Thank god for your armor! It strikes a protected part of your thigh, fangs not piercing through your scale protection. And better you with your armor, as it is a miracle it did not strike the baby!

Hanalee & Bright Feather, knowing the snake is there from Karnath's warning, act instinctively for the baby. Both of you strafe to get a shot off, given that the snake is not immediately apparent behind its total cover from baby cradle. You hear the rattle pause, a high-pitched, sharp hiss of a strike, and Karnath sucking in breath. Taking the best shot immediately present as you two move (3/4 cover, +5 AC) you react... and pray.

Simultaneously your strikes land, a bolt and a beam of ice white light. The snake is pierced and then frosted rapidly in succession, it has obviously taken a lethal amount of damage. (Ray of Frost 6 dmg, Xbow bolt 5+1 dmg) Its form does not even respond as a divine flame of alights, must be from Karnath, and burns the frost away. (Sacred Flame 3 dmg)

Listening briefly for any more rattling, you all assume it must be safe to continue rescuing this mother and child. What are you doing?

Karni is LG, so she would help the mother and child; not that a non-LG char would do different.

Bright Feather will look around to make sure no other snakes etc. are lurking about.

Karnath, roll me Medicine. You're triaging and stabilizing as much as you can before you move her and the baby.

Bright Feather, choose whether to check Perception or Investigation. One tests your senses, to determine any more immediate threats. The other tries to make sense of the scene and extrapolate where further danger could lurk.

Everyone else, let me know what else you are doing, where you are looking, etc.

Karni takes the kit of palliatives from her bed roll, and using a knife, gently slits the woman's wound open and draws the poison out with her lips. Spitting, she then cleans the wound with alcohol and wraps it with a bandage, then wets a rag and wipes the woman's face; before turning her attention to the crying infant.

Alric arriving late, probably due to his short legs. "I'll look around for anymore." He draws his bow and nocks and arrow just in case, then slowly circles around the area.

OOC - or late because of a busy weekend :) feel free to roll for me with +4 Perception. I'll let the medics handle the family.

Opaopajr

Karnath

Removing any restricting clothes and jewelry from her stricken arm, you look to your shield as a method to transport her to the Elders' Place or find "Sister Joyous." Rattlesnakes are not unknown to your people, so even though you don't know the exact species you are assuming the medical protocol is the same.

She will need observation and specially administered medicine — possibly even a second bite. Currently her affected limb must not be raised above her heart, and any excessive bleeding and tissue destruction monitored and kept clean. She's unconscious yet stable, however here is where the real danger resides...

(She obviously succumbed to Poison damage, and is still in condition: Poison. You guess she should be taking the equivalent of "death saves" every 30 minutes. You don't know for how long; new snake species, no idea venom amount, her health, etc.)

The snake head would be useful, for identification and medicine, though there is always a chance even a recently dead snake's head can bite again. Looking at the wound and the size of the snake... the fang wounds seem a bit off. Looking at her last few steps, there's more of her steps coming up from further down mountain.

This might not be the right snake! O_o
---------------

Bright Feather

Your danger sense tingles with the baby still so close to the snake, even with it supposedly dead. Traditional elvish precaution kicks in and you scoot the cradle out of striking distance. After that you think you can start your investigation in relative peace:

(Rolling Investigation for Bright Feather in the room. Roll 13 +4 INT = 17.)

That's odd that this woman would be struck here by a snake and lose consciousness so fast. You would expect an onset time for her to get closer to the trail, especially her with a baby. But perhaps shock?

Looking about for additional threats you notice her flower basket was collecting young velvety sage leaves. That you saw aplenty during your brief visit to the Sage Brush Felt Maiden's House. But there are no sage bushes around this large rock.

Looking at the woman's steps it all makes sense: she got bitten further below, and has been coming up mountain towards the trail. She and her baby just got extremely unlucky where she passed out. That snake is unlikely the culprit, but what value would be seeing where she went, particularly when time is urgent?

Down-mountain from the North-side of Downtown's New Graveyard

Hanalee, Alric, & Caden

Scouring the immediate area for any further threats, especially ones that would hamper bringing the two victims back. Hanalee partners with one of the other two, acknowledging she might learn a thing or two from the others. So far your efforts have found nothing in the immediate area.

However you have together found the victim's footsteps coming up from further down mountain. Hmm...

Also you see further down, at a minor leveling just at the edge of vision before the slope cuts it off, what looks to be the shadow of a hole? a claim? But that is back towards the town, which means just lower than the new graveyard, so it couldn't logically be a claim, ha ha! Must be a coyote den or something.

OoC: I was going to pick investigation cool.:)

Bright Feather nods...."I think the snake was just an unfortunate occurance I think the actual cause of her sickness is something below while she picked those leaves in her basket. It seems she picked them down that trail"...points it out.

Alric yelling back to the others "Seems safe now. I can see her trail leading further down the mountain." He pauses not knowing how else he can help. "Should we look further or start making a litter?"

Bright Feather nods..."yep I agree down that trail lies her attacker but we have business to attend to so litter is best besides Karni is her best chance at recovery wherever we go, graveyard, wilderness or town most likely anyway".

OOC: At this point I would assume people would be helping prepare to carry the victim upon Karnath's shield. There is rope among you. However I leave the rest of the details among you.

You are about a mile+ away from town, given your distance up trail and then down mountain past the New Graveyard. This is atop the 1/2 mile of town to reach Elders' Place. Crossing the graveyard doubtfully will buy more time, what with all the obstacles in the way (besides being unnerving).

Fast Travel rate is 400'/minute -- logically assuming a consistent jog - so about 20 minutes to cross 1.5 miles. Logically CON exhaustion, along with carrying STR and Speed factors, will dictate otherwise. Karnath guesses you have about 25~30 minutes cushion before the next critical moment occurs (Death Save). So:

Do you leave them here and explore the hole/claim?

Hurry up to your original goal of the Old Graveyard?

If you do save them:
Who carries the baby?

Where do you go to get help?

Do you all travel as a group, or someone run ahead? Do you have people alternating to carry the victim, so as to not be slowed by exhaustion -- or just push on through with the members in best condition?

Karnath says to monitor the arm to stay below heart level.

Artifacts of Amber

Alric using his woodworking knowledge*. whips out his hand ax and quickly cuts two body length poles then two smaller ones to lash across. He grabs his oiled canvas and twine and creates a serviceable litter that can easily make the trip. He even wraps part of the canvas around the bottom legs so they don't catch on roots forming more of a sled if it has too be dragged.

While doin so he says. "Disadvantage of being small folk. I don't think I can haul the lady that far. So when this is done I'll check out the trail and see if I can see what bit her and bring it along. Ifin it helps"

*proficiency woodworking kit. Not making anything that great so feel free to roll proficiency if you need to :)

Arkansan

"Well I can help with the litter, or I can take the baby and try to run ahead to see if I can have someone ready to help as soon as you get there. Just carrying the child I reckon I can get there a little bit ahead. "  Caden says as he scratches his chin in thought.
