Title: AD&D 1st Edition - Play By Post
Post by: Abyssal Maw on March 23, 2008, 01:27:51 pm
Well, I am now officially in between campaigns.. until June! Man, that's a long time for me. Thats.. longer than I have ever been out of a game since 1999 or so. I'm building a new mega-dungeon (which is fun) and organizing a "Celebration of the Legacy of Gary Gygax" at my local gamestore.. (April 12th and 26th. If you are in the Maryland area, shoot me a PM and I will give you info!).

But meanwhile, I'm between games and I just happen to have surrounded myself with all of these AD&D1e books for the Gygax thing.

I'm thinking two things:

Run something original and dungeony here at theRPGsite
OR
Run something over a virtual tabletop. I just noticed that NBoS Screenmonkey (http://www.nbos.com/products/screenmonkey/screenmonkey.htm) is free. (I prefer FantasyGrounds but it's pretty much set up for d20 without modifications, and it also costs people money to buy the client if they don't already have it. I'm too lazy to write modifications right now...).
But Screenmonkey is kinda old school and free.

If we do PbP:

You will need an AD&D1e Players Handbook. If you don't already have one, they cost $5.95 at RPGNow. Just post here if you want to play. Once we have 4-6 players we will start.

If we do Screenmonkey: You will need a copy of Screenmonkey Lite (the free version) and install Skype on your computer for voice chat. You will still need an AD&D1e PHB! (See above). We will also need to decide on a date and time. I am leaning towards Sundays at 1PM EST. (That's like 1800 Zulu). I dunno. Do your own conversions...

Any takers?

I'll install the software needed (assuming my IT guys don't throw a hissy) - if you'll have me. My only concern is that if we start at 1200 Central (1300 EST), I'm limited to four hours on the 5th and 12th (kids baseball practice).

That will be great-- I rarely run a game session longer than 4 hours James!

I may have to advertise this more places.

I dunno if we can match intercontinental schedules, but I´d love to take part in it. I could do 1900Z, Sunday would be fine.

EDIT: How do we roll characters? Method X?
Title: AD&D 1st Edition - Play By Post
Post by: Abyssal Maw on March 25, 2008, 01:26:46 pm
I was thinking of using standard Method I (or is it II?).

Roll 4d6, discard the worst die, and assigned the value to whichever stat desired.

I am not using AD&D's Unearthed Arcana, but otherwise any alignment, any class in the PHB. Starting with 1st level characters.

We could use http://invisiblecastle.com for die rolls (including stats) if you want to build characters online, and then we will move to the live game.

If anyone wants to play but happens to LACK a 1st Edition PHB, they are available in PDF form for like $5.95 from RPGNow. Alternately I will post a bunch of "grab and go" characters for the taking.

A couple of caveats:

This game will be as close to the books as I can make it. Gold is turned in for experience, etc. All options will be as close to the baseline as I can manage. However, because of the online format, and because of the unique nature of AD&D1e, I will inevitably have to make some adjustments. One adjustment I had in mind was I was only going to tally experience in the home base area. So if you feel like you levelled up, head to the home base, and I will do an XP tally and we'll see about levelling. I won't do a training period like some DMs used to do. I *do* expect levelling to take place during the game.

For players of previous editions: I know how to tune encounters for D20, but in AD&D, there's kinda no such thing. So..uhh.. bear that in mind.

I'll post some sample character pretty soon.

By the way, James (and other players): You will only need Skype and your web browser to play. Basically Screenmonkey just sets me up with a locally hosted web-server (where the dice, maps, and chat are located). You won't need to use the chat since we will do like a Skype Conference call somehow.

Skype is available here:

Just to let you know - I tried installing Skype and got some network thing.  I'm guessing it's the firewall here at work, so I'll try again at home tonight.

Are you going to set something up over at Invisible Castles? Just curious before I go and sign up or anything...

InvisibleCastle.com is just a dice-roller that allows for group validation. So you can roll up your character as in ye days of olde and nobody will think you are cheating :haw:

This game will take place on Sundays, so .. yes, probably you should be able to set it up at home. nBos Lite will NOT be required, just Skype and a browser. (And headphones with a microphone if you have that)...

I rolled me a ranger on first try:

14
17
13
15
11
08

But somehow I can´t save the result.

I have the window still open, so if you tell me how to save and send the validation, I can do so.

EDIT:

STR 14, DEX 17, CON 13, INT 11, WIS 15, CHA 8 (http://invisiblecastle.com/stats/view/16622/)

Here´s how I want to re-arrange them:

STR 17
DEX 11
CON 14
INT 13
WIS 15
CHA 8

I just tested it myself and it forced me to register, so I wouldn't be surprised. NO big deal. :)

Aha, I figured out what my issue with the program is (aside from some lag).

When you login to the game, where it says 'Interface' choose "Basic Interface" instead of the IE6/Firefox version. This allows chat to run simultaneously in another window/tab, and solves the automatic refresh issues.

I'm setting up Skype right now.

I installed Skype - but I don't have a headset.  Yeah, I'm that luddite even though I make my livelihood from the googlebox.

tomorrow I'm getting me something at lunch...so tomorrow night, if you want, we can test out the skype...

Let me know if you want to test the screen monkey again...Sett's a lucky bastard...

So it's OK to roll something up, then?

Yah, roll something up!

When you get your Skype installed, post here or send me a PM. I will PM you as well. I think what I will do is (when the game happens) start a conference call, then give out the URL. If Skype don't do it for us, I'll switch to Ventrillo (which will work fine).

I am setting up a test for Skype tonight, (PM me once you have Skype installed and I will send you a test call so I end up in your calling list).

I will also put the game server at 7PM EST. I have to finish mapping and setting up until then. I already have Settembrini's Skype info.

OK, so I goofed up using Invisible Castles.

The first roll I did (http://invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/1541244/), I did not do as stats - just as six rolls of 4d6.takeHighest(3) - and, as you can see, those rolls were stellar.

Then I noticed there was a roll stat thing, and I tried that. The results were not nearly as good. But I don't usually play thieves, and certainly not sniveling little weaklings...

STR 6, DEX 15, CON 16, INT 12, WIS 10, CHA 11

We'll give it a shot...

Well, you certainly qualify for other classes! and thieves are cool too.

Remember, this is AD&D1e, and Method I says "All scores are recorded and arranged in the order the player desires. 4d6 are rolled, and the lowest die (or one of the lower) is discarded."

See? Not so far off from D20, after all. ;) if you threw that 16 into Intelligence, and rearranged the others for taste, you could qualify for Illusionist!

Do you need a copy of the AD&D 1e PHB?

I'm finishing up the level keys, and I've concluded that (in true old-school style) we will need to round out a party with multiple characters; possibly hirelings, men at arms, or secondary characters.

Yes, even at level 1.

looks like a cleric to me:

I'm interested and would be willing to run two characters.

Awesome! You are in.. You can use one of the "grab and go" dudes from above OR you can make your own. Try out http://invisiblecastle.com for rolling up stats.

DeadUematsu, do you have Skype installed? It is free. http://www.skype.com
You will need a microphone and headphones.. or ideally one of those combo headsets.

I'll post the game server up again later on tonight. We are getting together at 1PM EST on Sunday!

If needed, I got another set of stats.

looks like a cleric to me:

STR 16, DEX 14, CON 12, INT 14, WIS 15, CHA 12 (http://invisiblecastle.com/stats/view/16656/)

...although, I´d love to avoid playing a Cleric.

He'd be a good fighter or magic user too. (Tenser, for example, had an 18 strength..)

If you put the 16 in Intelligence and the 15 in Dex he could be an illusionist..

Got Skype and Screenmonkey, and I had made a AD&D 1st Edition character about 2 weeks ago and have been random-adventuring with him and his three hirelings (per the DM Guide) off and on. I can make a new one if necessary in no time. I take it tomorrow is first session?

Do you have another online dice roller you approve of? Anytime I re-arrange my scores, I cannot save. I have lost all least three really good ability score sets whenever I had rearranged. If not, I'll just roll my own bones.

DeadUematsu.. if the invisiblecastle.com dice roller is giving you too muc trouble, just roll your own bones and I'm sure it will be cool as long as it isn't abusive. (haha). Just PM your character or something, I dunno.

Name PM'd. I usually let my players start with a random-rolled item just to provide some spice, so the sword can go no problemo. And I get the gold back for my hirelings, or should they tag along as well?

It was great fun! Thank you!

We should be better organized though, to make everyone´s experience smoother.

Things that someone fixed should do while playing:

1) mapping. we need someone to map while we are exploring.

2) notes. someone else should keep taking notes about names, factions, our exploits information etc.

3) a third person should keep track of our equipment and loot as we gather it

possibly 4th) keep track of enemies encountered, slain or otherwise overcome

I´m imagining a list that´s added to while gaming. I have a two monitor setup, I volunteer for loot-management. I can parallel-process with an Excel window open. I´d do any of the other chores as well, but preferrably not all of them!

If everyone does his small assigned part, we can surely save some time and lessen the burden on the DM.

I took notes for the whole thing - what we did, maps (as best I could - without scale), most of who we killed and encountered, then a list of everything we recovered.

All of it, unfortunately, the old fashioned way - pencil and paper. I could practice more so that it was better wired into the interface...

Ok, quick AP report:

Three heroes (Minston, Norcon, Tangal) and their three porters (well, Minston's three porters) arrived at the entrance to the old caves and made their way in. They started out by exploring some of the entry caves until they reached a pair of porticullis gates. Although they could not find a way to lift or raise the gates, the three spent a few minutes at trying to lift or bend the bars.

Tangal used his light spell to illuminate the area beyond the southernmost gate and you were able to see a pool with a statue of Maglubiyet and several brightly colored frogs.

You backtracked to the entry cave and tried the easternmost passage where you were joined by Tili-Teshub.. and then immediately atttacked by animated boulder-creatures. After a few rounds of battle, you eventually figured out that the boulders were leery of going near the edge into the depression. So you backed away towards the edge, then killed the majority of the Bowlers. The last one was captured as a curiosity.

Afterwards you climbed down the ladder to gather some geodes and investigate the small cave below.. and were confronted by a group of Kasarim slavers (a cleric, mage, assassin, and a fighter). The slavers were not immediately hostile, but guardedly suggested you head across Batswing Aerie to buy slaves from Goblinton and gave some simple directions.

Your group headed that way, but then once you had crossed to the other side, pulled up the ladder, then turned and attacked. The fighter tried to slash down the rope bridge in order to climb up and battle, but your group cut the other end and pulled up the ropes before she could.

Then, there was a pitched battle in the depressed area of the cave bed.

Minston jumped down into the ravine, followed by Tangal (who killed the mage with arrows before sliding down into the depression to fight)..
Tili-Teshub attempted to tackle the fighter by leaping into the gorge on top of her, but missed entirely. Norcon was yanked over the cliff by a manipulated rope-spell, and soon found him facing off against the enemy cleric.

Tangal, Tili-Teshub, and Minston managed to kill both the assassin, the fighter, and the enemy mage. The cleric eventually surrendered.

After some interrogation and threats the slaver cleric explained their mission and gave up the treasure he and his group had accumulated from slave-trading.

Loot was divided up and the evil-cleric was accompanied back into town, under arrest.

Rules Excavation result:

For Ranged Combat, the individual reaction modifiers count!

For example, if I rolled Init for our whole side [1] and the DM rolls for the enemy side [3], but Tangal knows he´ll be shooting missiles, he ADDS his reaction mod [3, assuming a DEX 18], and thusly might be able to shoot before the enemy attacks, even though his side lost init.

Hey guys, did I ever give out the spellbook spells?

Coralith's Spellbook (the dead slaver mage) had these spells:
Spellbook: Read Magic, Find Familiar, Affect Normal Fires, Sleep, Charm Person, Locate Object, Rope Trick, Forget

I believe Tangal took it.

Does anyone else want to play this Sunday at 1PM EST. that is Eastern Standard time!

I thought it was Sunday...

I will be launching the game on Sunday 1PM EST. ( I know we won't get Sett until later on, which is fine).  I will have Skype set up and I will just watch to see when people are available. (So if you aren't available, just don't have Skype up!)

If you can't make it, that's fine!

If you can't make it *right then* thats also cool. Just let me know when you are up on Skype and I will add you into the conference call and post the link to the game-website/map/dice roller thingy.

If anyone new wants to jump in, that's also fine! We can run with a smaller group... Or you can run around town somewhat... or feel free to explore the area. Last time I started you out right at the dungeon, but don't feel constrained to just doing that.

Ok, here is our wiki:

http://ravenshollow.pbwiki.com/

You will need a general pbwiki logon. (It's free). This will be a major piece of the campaign, where I'll put maps and stuff, and it's a good place to put character sheets, the loot report, and other stuff. A bit less sequential than this forum.

I am currently compiling the gamelog, which will get posted back over here as soon as I'm done!

Rules Q:

Do we play with 5% per level for the fighter types, or 10% per 2 levels?
If I interpreted correctly, the 10% per two levels is "just" an artifact of table-space-concerns?

EDIT: I´m now signed on to PbWiki, but I can´t edit anything.

Edot: Still need DeadUematsu's email address for the wiki, but I have everyone else.

Do we want to do a mid-week mini-session or something? Here's the parameter:

I can do any day of the week starting at around 5PM EST, or anytime therafter. That might negate Settembrini, who is 5 hours different. I think it might be fun to do a casual 2-hour catch-up on mid week somewhere, but I'm not pushing the issue.

Not a problem! We're ready whenever you are. I'm about as low pressure as it gets.

Update: I'm mostly recovered form the hard-drive crash. I have Skype and Screenmonkey loaded up. However, as tomorrow is the last day of ski season, unless the snow is sliding off the mountain I will be there and not here tomorrow morning (my time) - I apologize again, but since I survived last time I guess I might pull it off one more time. Then I will be back the following week and from then on.

Thanks! :)

No problem, just jump back in when you are ready! If I notice you are up on Skype I will call when the game starts, but if you aren't available, no problem.

I just got through running the Gygax-a-thon.. we got all the way through the Hill Giants and about halfway through the Frost Giants in the Giants Series. Everyone had a blast and is agreeing to meet up for the next part in two weeks.

I'll post some pictures from that in a little while.

Anyone else want to play AD&D1e? Let me know.. send a PM or just post over here. Everyone is still 1st level except for Norcon. Heh.

Here are my assorted notes for this week's game:

Accursed Badlands: Called such by Tangal's old hirelings (see below), inhabitated by werewolves (possibly) and salamander folk
Tangal's Old Hirelings: Two heavy footmen from Ravens Hollow, currently disloyal and favorable towards Nocron, wanted to leave AND they did, taking Tangal's stuff with them (GRR!)
Salamander Lords: Rule the salamander folk in the bad lands
Salamnder Folk: Inhabitants of the bad lands, look to the dragon ravine as a holy ground, they were agitated into aggression by Tili and are now threatening Lyca; they have actually begun to attack travelers
Choerstipix the Ancient: Famous red dragon, devastated the lands centuries ago, slain and his body dragged to the ravine by the local lord
Golden Moon Guild: At war with the Monkey's Paw Guild, a thieves' guild in the city of Lyca
Monkey's Paw Guild: At war with the Golden Moon Guild, a thieves' guild in the city of Lyca, Norcon is now a member
Phane: Unique creatures that the wealthy of Lyca have come to desire, they are a cross between a rabbit and an insect, and are often dressed in jewelry; wild Phanes go for one thousand to two thousand gold pieces

By the way, were the silver bands worn by the trogs included in the XP total given at the end of the session?

The Map!!!

Please excuse the gigantor graphic. You have explored all of the upper caves here, except for one tunnel in the northeast, opened the easternmost porticullis. Youv'e done a brief foray into the "lower caves" (southwest), crossed Batswing Aerie and toured Goblintown.

Apologies for the giant graphic.

Great!

just wanted to let you know, the 20 April Gamelog is taking me to a new page creation thingie - so you might want to check that link.

Another great session, IMHO. You guys must have done quite a bit after I left given the information presented here, or was this all just from threatening to toss Pillsbur over the edge in Batswing Aerie?

Oh I haven't finished the gamelog. The group decided eventually to cross that horrifying 180' drop from Batswing Aerie chasm by the zipline thingy. You went 2nd. Of the 5 henchmen that crossed, the 5th one actually fell in, and didn't survive the fall.. and in was soon devoured by an eyeless albino plesiosaur that was lurking in the water below.

I'll have to post a map of that level as well.

Anyhow, after the tragic death of the hireling, Tili figured out how to rope himself securely to the zipline to make sure he didn't fall, and the porters (each harnessed to one of Tili's bloodhounds) made it across as well as Minston.

After that, they hit goblintown, explored a bit, and were invited to the big Goblin Howl, sort of a local celebration. Any un-auctioned slaves will probably be thrown to the dire wolves they have there as well. Tili and Tangal made vague plans for a rescue (Tangal hopes to rescue people he can recruit as henchmen, leaving the civilians. Tili-Teshub will probably do the right thing and try to either rescue or buy freedom for the others.)

So right now, your group is undercover in Goblintown.

Oh here's a profile (note that this is side view, not top down) of the Batswing Aerie level. It's just one massive cave:

Pilsner the goblin led you here, you entered at the top on the left side.

One of the hirelings actually lost his grip on the zipline and fell to his death, but the rest of you were fine.

The rope ladder leads to the spawning pit, but the group opted for Goblintown instead. See my plesiosaur swimming around?

Here is today's set of notes:

Labrinyth of Madness: Another dangerous locale that we probably want to avoid, somewhere passbeneath the Spawning Pit
Trajir: A Lycan gnome who lives in a 'garden", "friend" (guild fellow) of Nocron, gave him a chisel, wants something stolen from Alebard, disguised himself as a goblin
Ko Guard Cairn: Another location in the dungeon, a stronghold of the Ko Guard, and ruled by King Korol, will be a safe haven while we are on the stealing from Alebard mission
Mande Wynwergar: A noble from Lyca who has some affluent relatives, she has made arrangements to properly reward the party
Cavis Blackthorn: A female rogue from Caralon who owes her guild substantial money, she was charmed by Tangal, captured by the Monkey's Paw Guild
Edom: Tangal's trainer at the Monkey's Paw Guild
Red Fever: Disease spreading through Lyca, a substantial reward has been posted for its antidote herbs
The Arrowsinging Incident: A patrol was attacked in the woods west of Lyca, several members were killed, elven arrows were found at the scene, this is causing anti-elven sentiment
Phane Fad: Still going strong...
Gruntgherm: Ogre boss of many goblins, is allowing us to pass unmolested (hopefully) to Ko Guard territory so that we might cause the Ko Guard harm.
Big Bee: Honey business started in Ravens Hollow by the priest of Irial, Tangal had became a backer

Guys I am thinking I might have to put the campaign on hiatus, (or even turn it over to anyone else?). I've had a great time with you guys! Unfortunately, my LFR duties are starting to spin up (as well as Worldwide D&D Gameday, which I am about to be on the hook for). I think I can still run it a few more times until June 6th.

Let me know if you get this! I'll send a Skype message out as well.  It's been great meeting and playing with you all. I'm hoping that that even if you don't continue with this game we get to see more games starting here amongst the goons at theRPGsite. Heh.

Well, you may have noticed I haven't been around a lot lately. This wasn't by choice. I get like 20 minutes in the morning while I'm at work to even say hello these days.

It was fun!

I think Sett will be pissed at me... but come on, this was easy to arrange and set up.

AM - I hope you don't take mine the wrong way. I completely understand given the fact that I'm getting swamped between work and coaching..

It was a great little game - which makes it difficult to let it go.  If there's ever a chance to pick it up, I'll be there in a heartbeat...

Good luck with the LFR.  Unfortunately, I was never a huge fan of FR - just mildly. Given my hesitance about the new rules, and I have my doubts as to whether I'll play. But I hope you have a good time with it and don't get too burned out (like I see some of the triads in LG).

In a way, now that I think about it, it's bitterness is only enhanced in the fact that I'm lsogin this game to 4e :haw:
