Someone will have a 'slacker' characater regardless.

It's all relative. At the top-end, someone is always slightly worse; that character could likely still out-perform many others.

QuoteI don't disagree with you about group expectations, but I tend to play with people that focus more on the character than the build.

I just can't get excited at about how many darts my character can throw, or get excited at finding a way to get full attacks in 3X when I move.

That's cool, neither do I. So the handful of people in our club who do care about such things aren't welcome in many games (Ever tried playing Gumshoe with someone who expects to always know all the rules and chances of success? One of our optimisers threw a huge hissy fit and claimed he couldn't do anything if he didn't know the odds.).

Unrelated to games.

The most common cases I came across of people throwing huge "hissy fits" over not knowing the odds or rules, are control freak types who attempt to play the financial stock markets.

Quote from: Harl Quinn;755495Yep, your sig is evidence of that ;) If I had $10.00 for every single snippy insult or nose out of joint over the various editions of Traveller "not being Traveller", I'd be a rich man...

But it's much more fun to laugh about all the whining over D&D, Pathfinder, and "balance".

One man's "balance" is another's "broken"... You want balance? YOU CAN'T HANDLE BALANCE! :rotfl:

We did had balance.  It was called 4e and look what happen to it.

Quote from: BedrockBrendan;755627While it certainly has nothing to with manliness, i do think there are players and posters who meet OHT's description that are basically sore losers, and I have to admit I have very little patience for that.

I've had characters die/get in trouble from GM dickery (mostly this one who loves undead). I don't like it, but I'm not necessarily going to make a fight out of it as it might cause more than just a bad encounter, especially if I'm in the game to support other players.

I've also had it happen from my own stupidity. If it's my own fault I'll admit it, and sometimes even say, "well, at least it was a FUN way to die!"

I figure the way to be a man about it is to deal with it and try to have fun.
Here for the games, not for it being woke or not.

Being a sore-loser is a good way to sum up the post. As a game, plenty of RPGs have the kind of rules that can make play challenging. It's pretty silly to claim that playing a more challenging game is some kind of mark of superiority.

At the same time, I think that challenging games exchange the initial frustrations of the learning curve and the occasional sting of bad luck for the pleasures of getting the hang of the game and occasional thrill of good luck.

I really see challenging games as trading constant enjoyment for the bigger pops that always show up later.

I have seen players that can't (or more fairly stated; hate to) make decisions without knowing the percentage chance they will succeed.

I don't relate to that at all. I mean, I might get annoyed if I keep failing at something, but I can choose an action for my character without knowing the odds.

I am not trying to be overly critical; I have mental quirks as well.

If players hate not knowing the probabilities, they shouldn't be playing tabletop rpg games at all.

They should be doing something else where the probabilities are known and/or exact.  For example, such as:  blackjack, drinking booze, watching movies/tv, etc ...

I am guessing the probability of drinking booze is 100 percent?

To have some sympathy for the (figurative) devil. When you play a game where figuring out success and failure depends on a randomly generated number, it's natural to wonder about the odds.

All of those numbers, bonuses, tables aren't just there for kicks.

I dare say it's my favorite thing in the world. On several occasions I've given up on...  ...even scheduled RPG sessions, just so I could get it. ...

I too have bailed on scheduled RPG sessions because of a "date."  I've also been quite surprised at the vehemence with which my fellow gamers complained about it.  Sure it's rude to cancel at the last minute and inconvenient to cancel at all, but I thought they would understand that it was for a good cause and I would never complain if they did likewise for similar reasons.  Gaming is a lot of fun, but it's not quite up to "date" fun.  :)

Quote from: The Butcher;755636On a more serious note, I'm not crazy about the derogatory use of "pussy" because (1) we have girls in this hobby and (2) I don't think being a sore loser is not emasculating per se as much as it's just generally pathetic and demeaning. And this applies to boys, girls and everything in between.
