Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). Where the heck is D&D 5e?

1989

This was announced back in Jan. 2012, and the internet was hoppin' with buzz.

It's soon going to be Jan. 2014. That's two years! (Good grief, it took less time to film TLotR than it did to develop a PnP RPG).

When is this train going to leave the station?

WotC needs to start giving people something to look forward to. Something official. Some kinda game plan. Some kinda schedule.

I've been totally underwhelmed.

Oh, come on! You've been underwhelmed since you realized it didn't have an A and a 2 on the cover...

As soon as they figure out how to keep the train from sinking after they send it down the slipway.

This may take a while...

You've said you hate it and won't play it, so why do you care?
D&D is not an "everyone gets a ribbon" game.  If you\'re stupid, your PC will die.  If you\'re an asshole, your PC will die (probably from the other PCs).  If you\'re unlucky, your PC may die.  Point?  PC\'s die.  Get over it and roll up a new one.

Exploderwizard

I'm very patient. A new version of D&D isn't something that causes anxiety or impacts day to day gaming very much. I will look at it when it gets released and hope that it is really impressive. Watch and wait.

Quote from: Old Geezer;724252At some point it seems like D&D is going to disappear up its own ass.

But...but...if they take enough time, they might get it right. Then what?

The PF fans will ignore it, the 4E fans will troll it, the AD&D fans will find that they've kept enough 3E/4E bits to ruin it. I don't expect it to sell well in the long run.

True.  If I play the Lotto long enough I might win too.

While an accurate depiction of how events will likely unfold, your reply ignored the impossible result that I posited in my post. The correct answer, based on what I wrote, would be something along the lines of people having nothing to complain about.

Of course, I was being tongue-in-cheek, as it isn't possible to get it right for everyone.

No, only the fringe fanbois of each edition (like you) won't play it.  I can't tell you how many games of Next I've played with people who have PF as their favorite edition.  Or AD&D, or 4e, and the've all enjoyed it.

AFAIC, good riddance to the fanbois

If it makes you feel better to think that, more power to you.

Question: if they release a Next that bears a 90-100% resemblance to the final playtest, will you be playing Next or some other game?

Just asking if you are a real fan, or another one of the bitter old schoolers who is happy 5E is validating their playstyle but won't actually be playing it.

I don't remember saying that.

Rather, I've been pretty optimistic.

The 2d20 system is kinda strange, but it nails the main point of not requiring grids, etc.

Definitely looking forward to it, but WotC is really dragging this out. We're not sending a man to a moon. We're just making a pnp rpg.

And the great bulk of D&D players who don't have any strong allegiance to a particular edition will give it a try. And if it works for them, it will become the new gateway edition. The longevity will likely depend on whether WotC follows through on their intention to focus on setting and adventure material rather than system bloat.

I'll play AD&D, PF (Beginner Box, anyway), and 4e, so I don't think I'm a fringe fanbois. I won't play 5e because I don't want to invest in yet another generic-D&D variant when I have shelves full already. If I wanted yet another version of D&D I'd get another one of the more interesting OSR variants - C&T or ASSoH maybe. :D
