Title: What's Everyone Playing or Running - OCT 2019 Edition
Post by: trechriron on October 07, 2019, 04:32:51 PM
I'm gearing up for a weekly SWADE game at my fave gaming club, Metro Seattle Gamers (in sunny Seattle, WA). Been making some good progress on the setting on World Anvil -> https://www.worldanvil.com/w/explorer-corps-trechriron
A lot of the prep has been formatting images, uploading and tagging with artist info (67 portraits thus far...). Deck plans for the ship should be done soon.

I got my SWADE box set here a week or so ago. Lots of goodies!

What about you folks? What is theRPGsite playing or running these days?

I had been running two GURPS groups, although due to recent player relocation those are on temporary hiatus until people get settled and we can move them to Discord. I'll be starting up a new GURPS game in the next month or so, and may alternate GM'ing with my wife (who since being introduced to RPGs via one of my previous groups, has garnered a great deal of interest in learning to GM GURPS herself so she can run games for her nieces and nephews as an alternative to D&D, which they've found great interest in).

Debating the possibility of starting a "backup" TFT campaign, for when we're short on players or want to switch things up a bit.

Still active playing in my local Starfinder society bi-weekly sessions.
My brother is trying to get our infrequent Pathfinder* sessions to be more regular now that summer is over.
*Pathfinder rules, Greyhawk setting.

Not running anything at the moment, but always plotting something. :D

Running my translation of Microlite3d6 for kids most weekends (have to pay for the printings I give away)

Playing nothing since my GM up and moved and the group disbanded.

Planning a Ringworld campaign, still trying to decide on the system (has to be either free or something most people already have, don't want to promote piracy {even if it's a honored tradition here in México} )

Running two 5E campaigns.  Both are in a setting I started from scratch shortly after the 5E launch (2014?).  Except for copious uses of Kobold Press "Tome of Beasts", the setting is all my original materials.

Playing nothing.

Planning/Writing my on again/off again home system as a spiritual successor to Dragon Quest.  Also planning a DCC game as a short change of pace sometime in the next year or two.

If any of you start campaigns before they've been cleared by your assigned Sensitivity and Diversity Editor, you are a Nazi.

And I don't see where any of you have filed your Consent in Gaming affidavits! How could you!!!

I haven't played or run anything for about a year now perhaps. I've sort of got bored with RPGs and the effort required vs return.

But of late, there's been some talk about the Adventures in Middle Earth RPG and I ended up getting the Player's guide, Loremaster's guide.
I've had a good read of them and discussed with friends.
There's been a bit of interest stirred up over it and as I'm a massive Tolkien fan, I might actually dust off my dice etc and run it.

-AD&D campaign for a group that had never played rpgs before...still doing pretty well
-Going on six year B/X campaign
-Traveller game with a group that plays C&C half the time
-Starting a MSPE one-player campaign (which is really good for James Bond-style stuff...I'm not sure how I'd run this for a group)

In addition we have generally required a wire harness, two spotters and a sensitivity consultant for each player but we've curtailed those requirements recently in favor of simple moral outrage. It's cheaper and less insurance-intensive.

Between campaigns in my regular group. Ran a little sci-fi PbtA-lite game called Offworlders last session. Not sure what to do next time. Maybe some Maze Rats. The classes are uninteresting, but the magic-spell-generation and the tables are a delight to my senses. I ran a PbP game of it for a while until the players mostly dropped out.

Running two funnels of DCC at Big Bad Con this weekend. First time at a con for me. Playing in a Mouse Guard game there, the only other game of DCC at the con, and something called Tunnel Goons.

Playing nothing regularly. Almost made it into a Burning Wheel game online a couple months ago but the GM wasn't really working out, and she moved it to a different day so I had to drop. I really enjoyed character creation and making up the world with the others though.

Planning on trying to get my regular group into a new campaign. Have yet to decide on a system. Need player input and some motivation first.

I'm afraid this command lacked either the disdain or moral righteousness to warrant obedience. Please light something on fire and dash you arms into the air as if they were unwanted thought-criminals who just objectified one another.

Also, I'm simply APOPLECTIC you spelled Nazi correctly. A little TOO familiar Mr. Spinach Cat? Hmmm?

Prepare for flatulent depersoning and exile to another forum with a lower resolution! Probably one of those Old School Reprobate places where old men scowl at one another with faded plastic dice and 8-bit wireframe glasses.

LOL! Kudos Trentin! And I agree, the variety is quite coolio.

As for my RPGing, I'm all in on the final writing stages for two RPGs to be "playtest ready" by Christmas hopefully, otherwise spring. As for actual play, I'm doing playtest stuff for friends' projects so its kinda less gaming and more "analyze during play", but I enjoy that immensely too.

Im in the same position. Though I've started looking over The One Ring to give it a go again if provided time and players.

Also I've had an earge to run BECM/RC D&D and go thru some oldie classic TSR modules like GDQ-series and use Dave Arnesons Blackmoor as setting.  With visits to the original dungeon itself below Castle Blackmoor, Temple of the Frog, City of the Gods etc. Lots of material to go over.

Playing:
- Monday nights AD&D Greyhawk game with our very own TheDungeonDelver
- Saturdays is our alternate/summer AD&D campaign set in a homebrew world run by one of our regular players in our Wilderlands AD&D campaign; we play in that game when our WL DM is on hiatus from June to October each year due to GenCon prep and work seasonality
- Occasional 1:1 mega-dungeon AD&D game run by my 11 year old son
- Occasional group AD&D game run by my 11 year old son for a bunch of school friends

Running:
- Occasional AD&D game for my kids set in my version of Castle Greyhawk
- And I'm planning to launch a brand-new AD&D game set in Greyhawk for 1-2 concurrent groups, here in Wichita; there was a lot of interest in Greyhawk and AD&D in the local FB gaming groups, and I've been itching to DM a regular game again for awhile, so the timing worked out!

If the new Greyhawk campaign doesn't work out, I'll run some CoC.

Allan.

Running:

Edge of the Empire - set in the Old Republic era during the Cold War between the Republic and the newly emerged Sith Empire. The players are a team of Bounty Hunters caught in the middle of rival Hutt Kajidics in the Arkanian Sector (aka the Slice - where most of the spice-manufacturing and distribution hub to the rest of the galaxy). Imperial and Republic proxies are helping/opposing the different Kajidic factions in a sector that is supposed to be neutral territory threatening the whole situation to go Hot.

Still running my play by post game. It's survived a website/forum change, several system changes, players joining and leaving, rules lawyers and personal disasters (e.g. marriage breakup) in the almost 10 years it's been running since 15th October 2009. Down to two players now and real life has slowed the game down somewhat but its still chugging along. A superhero game, the players have fought all sorts of challenges off including godlike demons, nazis (of course), robot invasions, zombie apocalypse, normal street crime, a civil war style all heroes must be destroyed campaign and currently the Earth has been taken over in an X Com style scenario. The rest of the team are in deep space having been shrunk into a microverse, deposed an evil empire run by a former superhero turned bad and currently ride out about in a sentient moon trying to find their way back to Earth whilst being hunted by various nefarious alien factions.

Started with the Golden Heroes rules set (which was so house ruled as to be almost a new game), currently on a very house ruled DC Heroes rules set which ditches the tables and hero point mechanics and speeds things up no end. As far as play by post is concerned, the original Golden Heroes game was superb for street level and tactical type combat in a play by post format. Unfortunately when the characters were imbued with godlike power (to defeat godlike demons) the old rules tend to not scale up so well. DC Heroes hands cosmic just fine (but falls down nearer street level as everyone was almost the same, stat wise, hence the rules change).

Phew!

10 years. Where does the time go?

Playing in a SWADE campaign and D&D 4e campaign.

Running some The Black Hack 2e this week and my Stars Without Number campaign is ready for fill.

I actually like running Savage Worlds, but I'm trying to pick up some sandbox techniques from OSR games and then go back to Savage Worlds. That way I can see how the system effects those elements (that and these are some cool OSR games, so I'm coming up terms with liking two things at once). Currently reading Silent Legions, which is just fantastic.

The 5E game I am a player in, we just found out we've been sneaking our way into places we should not go and doing things we should not do to rescue the trapped elven matriarch. But, it turns out we were having a conversation (via a crystal ball) with someone in the past and in the present she is very dead. We were like, oh man, that's twisted.

Latest game was last weekend:

First session of 1e AD&D for nine players: all of them are my youngest daughters friends from high school. Five guys, four girls. It was quite a group (and there are two more players that couldn't make the session). None of them have played tabletop D&D, before. My daughter arranged the thing (which is why there were so many players -- I might've limited the group size a bit). They seemed to have a good time. Lots of cheering and such at appropriate moments. I guess they all had fun, because as soon as we wrapped up they were all looking at their phones to figure out when we could schedule the next session.

(I didn't have enough rulebooks for everyone, obviously, but I'd given them all links to the OSRIC PDF before the game, and the players don't really need books, anyway.)

Currently playing

1.  5e in Kobold Press' Midgard Setting...Fun. but a pretty typical campaign.

2.  5e Dragon Heist...The DM is running it with all the "incluse-ivity" stuff still included and then he is building off of our antics in abusing the setting.  We are definitely into Paranoia levels of silliness but haven't yet reached Tales From The Floating Vagabond/Toon levels of insanity.  Needless to say if Mearls & Co ever read our campaign notes they would probably try to confiscate our books :D

Currently running --- although on temporary hiatus

1.  5e Primeval Thule (Heavily house-ruled)
2.  Top Secret
3.  The Dark Eye

Games to be run soon. (In no particular order)

1.  Star Wars (WEG d6)
2.  Low Fantasy Gaming
3.  Some sort of B/X -- BECMI -- ACKS game
4.  Lion & Dragon
5.  Astonishing Swordsmen & Sorcerers of Hyperboria

So my two regular long-term campaign groups have both gone to campaign board games at present:  one playing Gloomhaven, one playing Imperial Assault. I wonder if this is a thing with other people?

I still have a bunch of one-off and short-term games. I've got a twice-a-month story game meetup on Thursday nights - playing a variety of RPGs ranging from A Thousand and One Nights to Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I've also got an irregular 1-2 times a month group on Sundays that usually plays diceless and/or homebrew systems. And there's five local conventions a year - including Big Bad Con starting tomorrow. And a scattering of other gaming - like running D&D5 for my family on vacations and an irregular two-player Archipelago game.

So I'm not exactly starved for gaming, but for now no long-term campaigns.

Not playing currently, but running a B/X D&D game based around the Keep On The Borderlands, and god-DAMN is it like slipping into a really comfortable pair of shoes again. The rules are nice and light but don't mind that I brought my 3-ton toolbox of game mods, I can make rulings off the cuff because the engine is really familiar and operates like a well-oiled machine.

I snagged the hit dice rolling method from Stars Without Number, grabbed the hit-die-healing from 5E, threw in some Shields Shall Be Splintered, mixed thoroughly and baked at 525 degrees for four hours every few weeks. My recipe for fun!

Playing in 1.5 games of 5e:
* a Pictish devotee of St. Ninian chasing bandits around Hexham Abbey (female Fighter 1; Northumbria, 10th century).
* a detached-duty scout from the 7th Arcane Legion investigating goblin horse-thieves and a modron infestation near Amphail (Ranger 2; Forgotten Realms).

The DM running at Forgotten Realms work manages to get the group together *just often enough* that I can't socially acceptably bring back the West Marches series I started last time he went on hiatus (Tomb of the Serpent Kings!).
My family is too busy for me to run home games (Princes of the Apocalypse started well), although some of that is because of the Northumbria game the 14-year-old is running "to study for his history exams".
I'm doing serious research for a bronze-age-Mesopotamia-styled game. Sadly, there's almost too much material on Mesopotamia, but I wasn't coming up with enough for pre-Muslim Silk Road.

My main game  at the moment is Rolemaster (my personal version, which is basically a houseruled RMSS). Started at level 4 in Jan or Feb last year, PCs are currently around level 10 - 12. Generally two sessions a month.

A separate Godbound campaign, which I'm running on most off weekends, has been going for about six months.

Rolemaster will be wrapping up some time in the first half of next year, at which point I will most likely be running a Traveller game based on the Mongoose Traveller first edition playtest rules.

I have been playing in a weekly AD&D1e game where we're demihumans fighting against a human (basically, Roman) invasion. I play Ash the elven fighter. I went away for a month and came back and it'd gone gonzo, with submarines and MUs on permanented Tenser discs with ballistae and a pegasus figurine and all sorts of crazy shit. I got to use the aerial combat rules for the first time in 36 years of play. Ash is famous for having drunk 6 potions in one game session, and rolling 4 times on the miscibility table with no significant ill effects.

That is spectacular! I feel like congratulations are in order for cultivating and maintaining such a long-running successful (PbP!) game, so, congratulations!

You guys have some really awesome stuff going! I love this thread!

The Anima: Beyond Fantasy game I've been playing in for the last 3 years just wrapped up last Saturday.  We're moving on to Fragged Empire after taking a week off.

I run a Mutant Year Zero game but that's likely coming to a natural end in another handful of sessions.

I'm also running a Conan game (Modiphius edition) which only has 1 to 2 sessions left.  One of the other guys offered to run Vampire 5th for us once we do wrap up so I'll be playing in that.

Would love to read some actual play and/or thoughts on Fragged Empire.

Congrats on such a long running campaign!
