Title: What Retro-Clones Are Out There?
Post by: Sacrificial Lamb on April 11, 2009, 04:42:50 AM
Hey, guys. I'm curious about the various retro-clones out there, and wonder what's been published so far. The retro-clones you know of can be for any game, or any system. Oh...and links, please. :)

Swords & Wizardry: Core - this is OD&D with some supplement rules + some of it's own.

Swords & Wizardry: White Box - this one is for OD&D

Labyrinth Lord - this one is for D&D B/X, but scaled up to level 20, instead of 14

OSRIC - this is AD&D 1E

Basic Fantasy Role playing: no exactly a retro-clone, but it's own thing. A Basic D&D meets AD&D meets d20 (very lightly though)

Mutant Future - this is Gamma World in D&D B/X language. Plus it's also quite a game of it's own.

There are others, such as Microlite20 (http://microlite20.net/), which are not strictly-speaking clones, they've just taken some mechanics from another game and made their own. It's more of a fraternal than an identical twin ;)

Here's a web page on my site with a list and links:

http://www.retroroleplaying.com/content/retro-clones

It still mentions PDFs of older games being available as I haven't had time to update for WOTC's pulling them early this week.

Epées & Sorcellerie (http://www.lulu.com/content/e-book/ep%C3%A9es-sorcellerie/6032837), the French-speaking OD&D retroclone.
Edit - argh lol - Kyle beat me to it with his list on steroids.

That's because 2e, in the minds of many, lives in this nebulous middle ground between old school and modern stuff.
