This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Quote from: Anselyn;1110761I hope we're adult enough to understand that the BBC giving someone 60 seconds to air a view isn't the same as the BBC believing or supporting this point.  I am capable of not thinking that Pundit supports every view he gives a platform to here.

The BBC isn't a message board. They went to time and expsense to air this particular view, which I'm sure fits their overall agenda. I don't think they particular care about RPGs at all, they just care about that larger agenda.

I see a lot of comments on forums about the deficiencies of old school D&D. My main thought is that these are mostly posts by people playing old school D&D as pre-teens and all that implies... and how that affects their opinions on the game. I'll state for a fact that my experience with Basic D&D and AD&D as a 10 year old, does not match my understanding of the rules as I have read them as an adult.

People who are my age played AD&D and B/X as kids with all the childnessish that goes along with being kids at the time and then say that those games are crap based on that experience.

Fucking THIS.

As I am playing a new game of 5e, I decided to buy some of the original B/X sets to see if they were how I remembered them when I was a kid...

BIG difference in understanding what the rules were trying to do. The first iterations of the game I think assumed a bit of a wargaming background.

But by the errol otus cover basic/expert sets, those were pretty much complete stand alone games. And very much playable.

IMHO reading it again after a few decades; AD&D1e was a hot mess. It was a success because if its flavor, in spite of its rules. It was the B/X #1 supplement for cool stuff though...

I think a 6e D&D could do far worse than to base what it does more on the b/x style of gaming that at least in my circles was far more prevalent as a kid than a bunch of 13 year old kids sitting down and trying to run an AD&D1e game rules as written.

I didn't want to comment until I saw the offending video by the BBC (You can watch it here, it is short.). Honestly Pundit, while I agree that tabletop gaming has always been welcoming and has only recently been divided upon ideological lines by social justice wonks, the main speaker is kind of pathetic in that video. I think that you may be punching far under your weight class with this one.
"Meh."

Thanks I appreciate your comment.

I honestly agree with your idea for 6E. Honestly, there are plenty of games that provide the heavy build style play. I'd like the next edition of D&D to even further break down the barriers to playing the game. We should be making the game easier and more accessible for everyone. I think 5E is close, maybe it can be better. The way to go is provide easy simple entry along with later more rewarding choices for experienced players.

BUT the first effort should always be simple, easy, get people into the game!

I love this woman's youtube video promoting D&D. An amazing and passionate and open ended petition as to why everyone should play D&D.

Maybe so, but I was mainly responding to the huge reactions that the video had on social media.
