You get to play a Knight!

I read the original edition, but never played it.  Euro fantasy with Celtic flavor - and well written.   The combat mechanics look solid and the classes feel a tad bland, but functional.   Kinda reminds me of a blend of Pendragon & Basic D&D.

Supposedly the balance problems / power creep got fixed in the new edition.

Is anyone running DW?

I think it's a typical RPGnet Heartbreaker. No one will be aware of it in five months.

Plus it ties in with the all the old-school fetishism so prevalent right now, but this time done TBP-style: it's perfectly suitable for nostalgia-gaming, but without the stigma of being related to D&D.

Anything but that!

It's got awesome production values. An interesting setting. I didn't pay too much attention to the mechanics. But, like FASERIP, I think it's appeal will be limited.

i'd give it a look if i could find a group that is interested in playing a fantasy game of any kind atm, as opose to a group who just wants to play modern or near future games all the time.

it may last awhile based on nostalgia but i doubt it'll sell as well as traveller has so far.

Nostalgic, or limited appeal? The former is inevitable as the first re-release of an 80s game beloved by those who played it. The latter can be said of just about any RPG.

It's a good little fantasy game. Very playable, but no-one ever said it was the second coming.

I haven't read a single word about it. Except for this thread.

For atmosphere alone it's one of my all-time favourite games. The setting takes its cues from 12th century post-crusade europe, with alternative geography and the presence of sorcery and mythologically derived monsters. Tonally it can accomodate anything from traditional dungeon bashing to medieval horror and investigation to dark folkloric morality tales. Mechanically it's simple but effective, on a par with Basic D&D.

I'm not currently playing, but the new gaming club I've joined seem open minded enough to try it out. Hopefully I'll get to run a short campaign sometime soon.

I think the game would have been worlds better if they would have made a 'revised' or 2nd edition of it instead of just reprinting the original with all it's wonky game mechanics and other oddities.

This is the reason I don't like it.  If they ever make a revised version of DW, I'd probably buy it, but to me the current version ( aka reprint ) is just another outdated nostalgic game from the past.

True, but when I say limited appeal, I mean with in that context. Or,to put it a different way, very, very limited appeal.

Is there a list of changes in the Mongoose version?  I've recently read DW and the overall mechanics were ok except for the almost total lack of character customization - everyone of the same class has all the same abilities, spells, etc.

Not that I know of.  The only changes I've heard about are the classes being better balanced.  Perhaps a little tweaking of some spells too but that's about it I think.
