Title: What can you tell me about Providence RPG?
Post by: RunningLaser on November 17, 2015, 02:02:19 PM
This was an older rpg from the late 90's, think everyone had wings.  Your were supposed to be very heroic.  Remember reading ads about it and was interested in it back then.  Anyone here play it?  Anything you can say about the system, the world?  Thanks.

IIRC, it's Tim Kirk's favorite game outside his own.

Never heard about it. Googled it. Found two RPGnet reviews dating back to 1999 and 2000. Still don't know much about it.

Looks like a mess but it might be a glorious mess.

Wow! I still have the flyer for that.

It was a pretty weird setting overall. Sadly never got to get a copy. Just talked with the designers at Gen-Con.

I met the designers XID Creative at Gencon 97.

The game was touted as a fantasy setting with superheroes. The primer art was great. Really well done flyer.

For such an obscure game it had alot of supplements. I think at least half a dozen books!

The core book is pver 200 pages and despite what the primer says. The book is about 90% rules. Its got an odd stat point system, about 8 or 10 stats that had an odd range. Kind of like what you would get if you rated D&D stats only as their bonuses.

From a lost review over at the other place. Pretty much sums up the oddities of the system.

Quote2d10 is always rolled, regardless of the situation. Tasks are resolved by adding your skill+characteristic to get a # of dice. If the total is greater than 2, then each additional die gives you +2 to your 2d10 roll. If the total is less than 2, you get a -2/die modifier to your 2d10 roll. You then roll, apply modifiers, and compare to a target number.

Combat is basically a complicated skill check. However, there is an additional step to determine the target number. You figure the die total for each opponent, with the difference between the two added as a modifier to the base combat target number of 7. Combat rounds are divided into 1 sec. segments. Tbe segments you act on is determined by your (initiative roll+your coordination)-10. Damage is determined on a damage table, and applied to your body stat. It's not a bad system, and has some unique ideas, but the using generic examples throughout, it doesn't feel as unique as it could.

I have the complete run of this game.

and I'll be damned if I can tell you any real details about it.

The setting was underground, and pretty much every one had wings.  There was like one race that didn't but they had other ways of getting around, either climbing or jumping really high, or something.

it was supposed to be a fantasy game where everyone had superpowers.  Most powers went up to 8 (I think).  unless you were a magic user.  then you got no super powers but you got spells.
Spells were the same as super powers, but only went up to 6.

There were different 'classes' that you had to join and depending on your class you had an easier time learning certain powers.

I got it largely because the promo looked cool, and I found it dirt cheap on ebay.  (I think I paid less then $20 before shipping)

the main rule book was split so one was all setting info, and the other rules.  I remember having to go back and forth a lot when I was reading it.

ok, so I dug out my Providence RPG books, and started reading.  So far I've only read the intro fiction for the main rule book, but it covers the main points of the setting.  I'll share what I've read so far if that is ok.

Once upon a Time...
about 200 centruries ago, there was a war between the Gods and their followers, and a great evil being and his avatars.
The gods lost, and their followers were shipped off to the world of Providence, which is this big huge cave filled with a jungle. The followers were very upset to discover that their gods were just mortals with massive amounts of powers.
Over time many of the wardens, all but the warden of 1 city, decided to free the prisoners, realizing that their bloodlines are stagnating.
Time passes. (lots of it)
Society is made up of winged humanoids. Those who have true wings and can actually fly are the highest ranked in society, those who have glider wings are lower, and those who have no wings are the lowest of the low.  Most have either feathered wings or leathery wings.
Pretty much everyone belongs to a Tribe.  Eagle, Hawk, Swan, Dove, and Raven are the feathered.  Dragon, Gargoyle, and Bat are the ones with leathery wings, Bat being an off shoot of Dragon with glider wings attached to their arms.  Rat, Jackal, and Hyena are the ones without wings.

Magic.  Magic is fairly rare among the millions of inhabitants.  Typically the only people who have any kind of magic are the Nobles, or members of the Guilds.  And of course PCs. The most common magic users are the ones who are refereed to as Shards, they have 1 particular power set.  These are the people who are members of the Guilds.  Those who can shake the ground are Drummers.  Those who can attack from a distance are Archers. Those who can heal (the smallest but most powerful of the guilds is the Chirugians. The Cartographers are the guild who are REALLY good at flying, and they map the world, and collect secrets.  They are TOTALLY not a thieves guild *wink*.  Lastly is the rumored Guild of Dusk, the assassins, but no one knows if they really exist or not.

and because no setting is complete without enemies, there are 4 Lost Tribes.
Swarm Dancers have taken their queue from the insect life, and have a hive mentality.  Those who have wings have clear insectoid wings.  Where most strive for personal perfection, the Swarm Dancers accept that the individual is imperfect, and form families who can cover their weak spots.
Serpentkine are reptiles, and may be the original inhabitants of Providance.  They mostly want everyone dead, but a splinter group exists that think the only way to survive is to work together with the outsiders.
The Green People are into nature, like REALLY into nature.  They have plants growing out of their skin, and most agree they are really weird.
Lastly there are the White Crows.  They use darkness and shadow magic and want the tribes to die.
You also have the Wardens of the last prison city state, who are holding 8 million hostages.

the other kind of magic is called Wird.  Where shards have 1 of 70 powers, the rare few who have access to the Wird, while their abilities are not as strong as the Shards, are more varied, with 250 spells to choose from.

Present day.
Apparently something is going wrong. Over here you have a volcano erupting and spewing deadly gasses into the air.  Thankfully this cavern (which has a sun that brightens and dims for a day / night cycle) is big enough that it hasn't poisoned all the air yet.  Then over there, you have a river that, well, there is a crack along the base of the river, which is causing the water levels to rise, so the cavern is flooding.  So all the ruling nobles got together and decided, screw this, we're going home.
A proclamation was made, that, yes, we nobles are powerful, but we don't have the power to get us home alone.  We need everyone's help.  We know that there are gates that brought us here.  Those gates have keys.  We DON'T know where most of the gates, or the keys are. So we need all your help to find them.  Good luck, for all our sakes!

so, yeah, that's the basic set up.
not a bad idea for a setting, you got exploration, you got fallen gods, you got enemies, you got monsters, mysteries, an over arcing goal.  people you can and can't trust.  Oh, and I'll mention it here because there wasn't really a place to do so earlier.  The Rat tribe are populated entirely of the members of the Dragon tribe who are born wingless, and are looked out for and treated more like equals then any of the other wingless.
More and more of the wingless, called the Fallen, are awakening as Shards and Wird. Far more then the nobles. They don't like being treated like trash because they were born without wings.  A revolution is coming.

All of this is gleaned from the product the Hero's Prologue, a 42 page book containing the main rule book opening fiction, a basic run down of the setting, and a short adventure (which I have not yet read).

So, is that enough info, or should I do a Where I Read thread?
