This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Vin Diesel quits DMing and...

Actually I think that sort of thing could make a decently-popular cable show. It'd be dirt cheap to make as all you'd need to pay would be salaries to a few celebs for just a few hours of work (so you wouldn't need much of an audience to break even) and I think people would tune in, "random celebrities hang out, chat and do mundane stuff" is a popular genre of television here in South Korea and I think that people in the US are celebrity-obsessed enough to get a sustainable audience for that sort of thing if you could get a few celebs to go along with it and edit it  intelligently.

Dumber things have been made into reality shows, far far far dumber things.

If it's that cheap, do it on YouTube.  We already have proof-of-concept with Tabletop's two episodes on Dragon Age.

I saw in the interview where he was playing D&D with Judi Dench and Karl Urban, but I didn't see anything about Dame Judi DMing with her grandkids.

Still, if she were to DM, that'd be really cool, like how she embroiders swear words during movie shoots.

I want to play Changeling: the Dreaming with Andy Dick, Anne Heche, Sean Young, and Louie C.K. (things are funnier with a comedic straight-man). First edition.

edit: oooh, and maybe Dennis Rodman or Chris Tucker, too!
Just make your fuckin\' guy and roll the dice, you pricks. Focus on what\'s interesting, not what gives you the biggest randomly generated virtual penis.  -- J Arcane

You know, people keep comparing non-TSR D&D to deck-building in Magic: the Gathering. But maybe it\'s more like Katamari Damacy. You keep sticking shit on your characters until they are big enough to be a star.

Quote from: GameDaddy;725142allows Dame Judi Dench to run the game as DM! She's now GMIng for her grand kids at home. How cool is that??!!!

Ok, I have to ask. I reread both links several times but I can't find quotes or sources for
  • Vin Diesel quitting GMing
  • Dame Judi Dench GMing for her grand kids
Maybe I am just blind...

Also, that "recent" Chronicles of Riddick interview is relatively old, it's from the time of the second Riddick movie (2004). And the Judi Dench info from it had made the rounds at that time, as well.
Swords & Wizardry & Manga ... oh my.
(Beware. This is a Kickstarter link.)

Exploderwizard

As I remember hearing the story originally, Vin almost convinced Judi Dench to pick up the dice and play during the filming of Riddick.

I remember part of a talk show where he said that.
Quote from: JonWakeGamers, as a whole, are much like primitive cavemen when confronted with a new game. Rather than \'oh, neat, what\'s this do?\', the reaction is to decide if it\'s a sex hole, then hit it with a rock.

Quote from: Old Geezer;724252At some point it seems like D&D is going to disappear up its own ass.

Quote from: Kyle Aaron;766997In the randomness of the dice lies the seed for the great oak of creativity and fun. The great virtue of the dice is that they come without boxed text.

Second link:

"Judi Dench learned Dungeons and Dragons from...Vin Diesel. And DM's for her grandkids now. Well, that's the best thing I'll hear all month."

Of course this is a random comment on Twitter, so it may not be true.

Right.  The info does say in the Vin Diesel interview that they played, but not that she DM-ed.

Tim Duncan is the other surprise big name celebrity gamer besides Vin.  But I think the biggest surprise that I've heard is Michelle Malkin.  Really surprised she games too.
D&D is not an "everyone gets a ribbon" game.  If you\'re stupid, your PC will die.  If you\'re an asshole, your PC will die (probably from the other PCs).  If you\'re unlucky, your PC may die.  Point?  PC\'s die.  Get over it and roll up a new one.

Tim Duncan actually doesn't surprise me very much.  I've heard enough interviews from him over the years, and he always presented himself as a pretty smart guy.  Andrew Luck has also mentioned in interviews that he plays Settlers of Catan.

Why is that such a surprise?
"Meh."

Because playing D&D isn't exactly an activity encouraged by the far religious right.  That's why it's surprising.

And I suppose this is the quote, although the youtube link isn't working anymore

QuoteI mean, I was literally playing Dungeons and Dragons with Judi Dench and Karl Urban at nights after shooting. I will tell you that I was showing her Dungeons and Dragons books and showing her the different properties of Elementals. Call me crazy.

Yeah but i hear she plays mainly with fiscal conservatives and Neo-cons like Karl Rove.

She lives in a self-concocted fantasy world of monsters and evil conspiracies, so I don't find it all that surprising.
