This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Hello all,

It's your new freindly face around this forum J Ward here!

I am taking a minor break from working on the Utopia RPG Game Book, to post to the board what state the Game Currently is in.

First off I should let you know, I have come to the conclusion and have made the choice in my mind that since Profit is NOT my motive for releasing this game, that I will be realeasing it under the GNU FDL.  This means you will all be free to file share it to your heart's content under the terms of the GNU Free Documentation License.

I do this because I am looking to create a leagacy and a game that is worth playing that will be open and free for all.  I feel that by taking a more "Open Source" approach to the game that I will achieve this.  Even if I go offline (heaven forbid!) the game will continue on so long as their are people wanting to play and share it.

I have gotten the introduction chapter rewritten thanks to some feedback I have gotten on this board about settings and what would make for an interesting game.  I genuinely thank you for your input on the matter.  Your feedback is only helping me to create what I think is a better game than I would have normally been able to produce.

I have also gotten the character generation chapter written.  I think it's almost fundemental that when reading a game book on a roleplaying game that you are shown the world first, and then taught how to create a character to interact with that world.  So these two chapters were the ones that I knew had to come first.

I am currently in the middle of writing the chapter on tasks and task rolls and with any luck will have a working beta of the game in a playable state of being by sunday night or monday morning.

I will be isolated this weekend, and with the exception of the minor inconvienience of going out to the store with my worker to shop for groceries here in a bit today, I will not be distracted by direct human contact this entire weekend.

I am going to be relying heavily upon these boards to keep me sane and in touch with reality.

I will keep you all posted as to the update of the game, and with any luck will have a playable game transcribed from years of notes very soon!

Thank you,

Joel

Thank you I will!

I should also point out that by doing this game it is giving me a bit of meaning.  I am well into writing the task and task roll chapter, and it is almost complete.

The next stop will be the chapter on rounds!, but as soon as I make some more progress I will let you all know!

Thank you,

J Ward:)

Well thank you for your interest.  I only have one more distraction today to get through and that is when the housekeeper comes.  Beyond that I am free (and dedicated) to transcribing my notes into a usable game before this weekend is out.

I should clear something up though.  My name is Joel not Jay.  A guy named Jay was able to convince my lesbian ex wife to turn back to being straight.  But that is a whole other story and totally off topic.

I don't mind that people know what my name is.  Anyone who knows how to do a Whois search can get my name and contact info, because I own websites.

One website I own is for this project and is UtopiaRPG.org (aka UtopiaRPG.com, Utopiarpg.net).  I am sure that if anyone wanted to contact me bad enough they could find out how to do so from there.

The site is sill in it's early stages, but I am using it to report official news on the project or just my thoughts along with this board.

This board out of all those I have visited has given me the most warm welcome I have ever recieved of any of them.  I had been cautioned by a friend that this board wasn't really into indie rpg's, but I can tell now that what I have been told may not have been as accurate as what it was proported to be.

And that makes me happy.

I love the game and gaming and really want this project to take off.

Well I am back to writing about the rounds of the game.  I have finished the chapter on tasks and the task roll so I figure it is the next logical place to continue on.

I really appreciate your comments, you are helping me through a rough weekend.

Thank you,

J Ward

And Jay Ward was, of course, the creator of Rocky & Bullwinkle, Peabody & Sherman, and other delights of my childhood - which is where the slipup on your name came from, Joel! :D

Oh don't forget Fractured Fairy Tales!

Let's see, I am about to go out and get some air at the local picnic table in my apartment complex.

I thought I would post an update to what I have gotten done....this is really helping me to keep sane.

I have gotten rough chapters done for the Introduction, Character Generation, Tasks and Task Rolls and the Rounds.

I hope it's allowed to post links in this forum because i am about to post one.

You can see the progress that has been made on the game at http://www.utopiarpg.org/index.php?option=com_wrapper&Itemid=8

The latest build can be found there. (it's currently at 1.6.02)

I am going to go outside now and get some air, but thank you all for communicating with me and helping me keep sane over these next few days.  I will begin work on the next chapter as soon as I get back in from my little nature setting session, which my couseler says is good for me.

Funny thing, when you tell them you live your life on the computer, they look at you funny and more or less tell you that you need to get out more and be social.;)

Thank you,

J Ward

I have not dropped off of the face of the Earth!

I took a bit of the weekend off to relax and have some fun, but still managed to get some work done on Utopia RPG.  I have finished up work on version 1.6.05 this morning and am happy to report the the prelimanary work on the Utopia RPG Game Book is completed.

While the game has not been edited by an editor yet (and I strongly caution for anyone to read it with caution, bearing in mind possible gramatical errors and the simple fact it hasn't been beta tested yet), I am suggesting that you check it out.

It can be found in the free downloads section of www.UtopiaRPG.org.

The game has been released under the GNU FDL, but it is advised to wait until the game has been playtested and a more final version can be established before beginning to circulate it.

Work will begin today on the Utopia RPG Equipment Unlimited book which hopefully when completed to at least the same stage of development the Game Book currently is in, will make for a game that can be play tested.

I am sorry for not having posted an update over the weekend, but life happens.  I will be dedicating myself this week to working even more on this game and will keep you all updated as the game progresses.

Thank you,

J Ward
