Traveller-style lifepath generators for Coyote Trail

Maybe its because the 2d6 mechanics struck me as so reminiscent of the old Traveller. I don't know. But one thing I couldn't stop thinking as I read that book, and planned out what will someday no doubt be a great historical western campaign, was just how much the book could benefit from some kind of a Traveller-style "prior history" generator system.

Anyone interested in giving a shot at creating some?

Being an old "classic" Traveller grognard, I'd love to (contrary to what you'd like to think, I only test Swine-positive).  Unfortunately, I don't have Coyote Trail.  Liked your review of it, though, and I had a particular interest in your contrast between the two given character generation methods.

Posted my long-ass list of archetypes here (password "west"): link. Maybe that'll be a good start.

Speaking of the review: was the information on American Indians good enough that you'd recommend Coyote Trail for just that?

Yes. I'd never seen that particular subject dealt with in as much detail as I saw in Coyote Trail, at least not in a main book.

That ratchets up my interest level a few notches right there.

I've bookmarked the website for further perusal and possible purchase, based on Pundie's review.

I enjoyed Dogs in the Vinyard (stop throwing tomatos!) and GURPS Old West was a nice book too (reviewed it myself when 2nd edition came out). I'm currently living in Utah which is just dripping with Old-Westishness. Went out to Promontory Point over the Christmas holiday, which is where the Transcontinental Railroad likned up - gold spike and all (well, replica, actually). History? Yoiu're soaking in it! And of course, the terrain is straight out of an old Western - literally. Many were filmed in southern Utah.

So yah, I like the genre.

Like Kanab?  Yeah, the last leg of my geology field camp traveled from Kanab to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon, then up through the slickrock in Escalante, then Moab and Arches.  It was...pretty mind-blowing.  All good memories for an Old West rpg.

Isn't that were many actors in a John Wayne film got cancer, because there was a nuclear test site near them? :haw:

Nah! The test sites were in Nevada, not Utah! They wanted to be close to Vegas. :D
