Title: Top 10 RPGs of theRPGsite: 2010 Edition
Post by: Zachary The First on March 24, 2010, 09:35:22 PM
OK, gang, 3 years and 1 new edition of D&D later, I figure we'd do another thread on the Top 10 RPGs of theRPGsite.  Basically, rank your favorite RPGs #1-10.  A 1st-place ranking is worth 10 points, 2nd place worth 9, all the way down to #10, which is worth one point.  After about a week or when it looks like responses have dried up, we'll tally up the votes and see just how consistent we are as a site.  Have your answers changed since 2007, or are you steady and unchanging in your favorite games?

(Here's the 2007 thread for reference (http://www.therpgsite.com/showthread.php?t=5040)).

Oh, feel free to put down an Honorable Mention.  Maybe we can use that as a tiebreaker if two RPGs tie on points.

Somehow, I doubt it will look like Big Purple's Top 10 (http://index.rpg.net/), but I leave room to be surprised!  Happy ranking!

1. Savage Worlds (I could populate this list with settings...=P)

6. Dragonlance SAGA

Note: This list does not include a number of games that I have read and look amazing, but have not had a chance to play, which includes BASH Ultimate Edition, Slasher Flick, Cartoon Action Hour, Hearts & Souls, Grimm, and Two-Fisted Tales, among others...and does not include settings that I love WAY more than their native systems, such as Ravenloft and Midnight.
Title: Top 10 RPGs of theRPGsite: 2010 Edition

This list is kind of cheesy since I haven't played all these games...I'll put an * next to the ones that are based mainly on a read-through and maybe some sample combat. If I don't think I have a good idea of how the game plays, I'm not putting it on the list. The ranking is based pretty much on how quickly I'd jump at a chance to play or run the game.

1. Elric/Stormbringer 5/BRP (Chaosium)*
2. Talislanta (2e or 3e preferred)
3. The Fantasy Trip
4. Dragonquest*
5. Chaosium/Avalon Hill RQ III
6. B/X D&D (Moldvay)/Labyrinth Lord
7. Waste World*
8. 2300AD
9. The Arcanum/Atlantean Trilogy (Bard)*
10. High Fantasy (Dillow)

My 2010 Top Ten

1. Spycraft 2.0
2. Castles & Crusades
3. Aces & Eights
4. Mutants & Masterminds
5. Metamorphosis Alpha 4
6. Traveller
7. Gamma World Original 1st edition
8. GURPS / Alpha Centauri
9. Starsiege
10. D&D 3.x / D20 (Eberron / Twin Crowns)

Eberron & Twin Crowns will keep me playing D&D. Castles & Crusades is my first choice for Fantasy games, although I'm likely to switch to running Fantasycraft games if the CKG doesn't have a GenCon release. Been waiting three years now for a GMs guide for C&C. Might never happen.

Aces & Eights is #3. Still haven't played or run a game, or campaign, however really, really, want to.

M&M is currently the kids favorite, and I've been running much more of that than I historically have.

MA4. Behemoth psychotic crashed Intelligent starship, loaded with rampaging mutants, a small colony of humans, and with a whole new world to explore now that the Chairman Mao Tse-Tung is forever grounded on  Delta Triangulum Beta II.

GW 1st edition, and Gurps hold places of honor on the list. Fudge is there too, right at the #11 spot. You can think of it as FATE light.

Starsiege. Still want to run some New Battlestar Galactica games with this.

Quote from: Benoist;369454Peregrin and C&C however...

C&C is what I wanted D&D to be when I first played, tbh.  For me, it contains the right mix of the flavor of fantasy I like (classic races/classes/monsters, etc.), with the type of power-level I'm comfortable with, and a base rule-set my players know.

Also, my group was basically playing a toned-down version of 3.x for years (through ignoring nearly all splatbooks, "winging-it" by the DM to keep the game moving, etc.).  The feats and all the combat options were fun to play with on paper, but at the table they were far clunkier than they looked, and the game would just grind to a halt at higher levels.  We had more fun playing out our characters, solving puzzles, and overcoming out-of-combat challenges than we did once we rolled initiative.

1. Marvel Superheroes (FASERIP)
2. Cartoon Action Hour
3. Don't Rest Your Head
4. Buffy/Angel (CineUni in general really)
5. GURPS (4e)
6. Dread (the horror RPG w/ Jenga)

10. Savage Worlds

That's 10 of the 11 games I can actually remember getting to play. The other 1 . . . well, I'll save that for the other list. ;)

10.Traveller (classic verison)

I missed out a load of homebrewed stuff including my Bladerunner/Cyberpunk game that would probably rank 2 on this list and would be the 3rd most played game in my past.
And I didn't rank AD&D 1e appart from 2e becuase we basically mashed it all up and added houserules to make our own version and I coudl never imagine us going back to a 1e version.

Homorables for Flashing blades, Bushido, V&V and I do think Bunnies and Burrows had some elegant mechanics.

6: Labyrinth Lord
7: Paranoia
8: A|State
9: Burning Wheel
10: WFRP 2nd Edition
Honourable mention: True20

EDIT TO ADD COMMENTARY: I'm counting DH and RT as one game ("Warhammer 40K Roleplay"? Why not, it's on the side of the books...) because they're so similar.

AD&D 2nd Edition seems to have shot up in my estimation since 2007, I think because a few attempts to play other early editions have opened my eyes to just what a nice balance "core" 2nd edition has - so much complexity has become optional, but so many options remain to provide variety.

I've picked Labyrinth Lord specifically instead of B/X D&D because LL has Original Edition Characters and the Advanced Edition Companion, which between them make it like the Universal Translator for early D&D.

I wasn't entirely sure if some games should be listed separately or combined.  I combined the ones that had the same basic rules, which seems appropriate for some entries (Classic D&D and LL, for instance), while a little less so in others (BoL and LoS, same rules but different settings).

But whatever, here's the list.

1. Basic/Classic D&D and family (B/X, BECMI, RC, Labyrinth Lord, Swords and Wizardry)
2. Castles and Crusades
3. Barbarians of Lemuria/Legends of Steel BoL Edition
4. Dungeon Slayers
5. Dragon Warriors
6. D6
7. Fighting Fantasy/Advanced Fighting Fantasy
8. Basic Fantasy RPG
9. Dungeon Squad
10. Risus

Honorable Mention
11. Dragon Age
12. Ancient Odysseys: Treasure Awaits (cool little game, worth checking out)

I see a pattern here.  Rules Lite fantasy, anyone?

My go to games are:

1. Fudge
2. Star Wars WEG
3. Marvel Super Heroes
4. Gamma World
5. Ghostbusters
6. octaNe

Did not quite make 10 because I thought I'd limit myself to games I know well, enjoy and would gladly run again. Hence I excluded from my list some great games which for whatever reason I seem to have no desire to revisit (Pendragon) and some games which though I really enjoyed as a player (DC Heroes and Cyberpunk 2020) I never having really learned the rules properly so I don't really feel qualified to comment.

Honourable mentions go to Basic D&D and Savage Worlds. To be honest I don't really care for D&D but I do run it from time to time to appease the fantasy nuts in my group and at least the old Rule Cyclopedia is simple, iconic and has a certain retro-chic appeal. Savage Worlds I have read and I do like the sound of it but somehow I just haven't got round to it yet.

I like Elliot's *-distinctions so I'll use that with mine. Similarly, consider this a "jump at the chance to play" list as well instead of the "all-time" list:

D&D 4e
Iron Heroes
Hackmaster Basic*
Dragon Age*
Burning Wheel
Paranoia
Mongoose Traveller*
Mutants & Masterminds 2e*
Aces & Eights
BECMI D&D

Honorable Mention 1: Trail of Cthulhu*

Title: Top 10 RPGs of theRPGsite: 2010 Edition
Post by: Fifth Element on March 25, 2010, 07:04:50 PM
Quote from: jibbajibba;369551Interesting that some people have games from a range of genres where as others have a much narrower focus.
I'm very much a D&D freak, and not having D&D I'll go for D&D-ish fantasy. There's some other games I enjoy though. The only game I know well enough to break down by edition is D&D of course:

1. D&D 4E
2. D&D 3.X
3. D&D (BECMI)
4. AD&D
5. Warhammer FRP
6. Iron Heroes
7. Shadowrun
8. Dragon Age
9. Cartoon Action Hour
10. Pendragon

Ten?  Bloody hell, that's a lot of games.

Hm.  Ok.

1 Call of Cthulhu
2 Space 1889
3 Traveller, Classic edition if it matters
4 Swords & Wizardry
5 Pendragon
6 Runequest, second edition if it matters though MRQ2 is looking interesting
7 Gangbusters
8 WFRP, first edition, I didn't take to second in the end good as it is
9 Elric!, though if I didn't have to list 10 it likely wouldn't be here
10 Paranoia, second edition, maybe?

Honourable mention for Qin.

This does remind me I need to give Flashing Blades another try, and I need to try Aces in Spades too.  I might try a one-nighter of that in a few weeks.  Edit:  I won't get to actually for a while, I have an S1889 game coming up and then I'm handing over the GM chair for a while.  Blast.

Here's my list from 2007.  Less overlap than I'd expected:

Quote1 Call of Cthulhu
2 Runequest
3 Space 1889
4 Ars Magica
5 Pendragon

10 is a lot of games you know.

6 Savage Worlds
7 Elric!
8 D&D Rules Cyclopedia
9 Classic Traveller
10 Over the Edge

Edit: Honourable mentions to Dying Earth, Warlords of Alexander, En Garde! which has a large online following.

Hm, Dying Earth should be in there, but I'll stick with that list for now. Right, what did everyone else put.

Incidentally I left my own games and most of Clash's off deliberately because of my own involvement.

I mean who wants this list?  Heck the top three aren't even done and five and six are just glimmers in the back of my mind.

1. Galaxies In Shadow
2. Ultramodern Rules Kernal
3. Bare Bones
4. among the beautiful creatures
5. School Glue
6. Obscure Lands
7. Cold Space
8. FTL Now
9. In Harm's Way: Wild Blue
10. Rolemaster Standard System

1: Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay (2nd Edition)
2: Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay (1st Edition)
3: New World of Darkness (Changeling the Lost)

5: Call of Cthulhu (3rd ed)
6: Malestrom
7: Victoriana
8: Metal, Magic and Lore
9: On Her Majesties Secret Service
10: Fuzion

Savage Worlds should probably get an Honourable mention, as I have been looking at it a lot but have yet to find anything I would want to run under it.

It's really interesting to see how your opinions change over time - I've looked at my old vote and my current one and here's the differences, with notes as to their score (new score/old score)

New entries: Dark Heresy/Rogue Trader, Labyrinth Lord*, True20
Up: Call of Cthulhu, AD&D 2nd Edition*, Paranoia
Down: Pendragon, Ars Magica, A|State, Burning Wheel, WFRP 2nd Edition
No longer charting: Dogs In the Vinyard, Weapons of the Gods

Would be interesting to see how the final chart changes.

*In my original vote I put in one for "pre-3.X D&D". I've narrowed that down to 2nd ed as my favourite "official" edition and Labyrinth Lord as my favourite retro-clone, thanks to it being able to act as a universal translator with the supplements.

I did play both games but got stuck in ElfQuest due to not knowing the setting at the time and in Hawkmoon we always got killed at the start of each session.

I also missed off Prince Valiant as we did have some good beer & pretzels games with that.

1. AD&D 2e (we had the longest & best campaigns with this one - but I acknowledge that was as much a function of who we were during that period as anything)

2. Marvel Super Heroes (FASERIP) (probably #1 in the 'go-to game' category)

3. TMNT & Other Strangeness (I still want to re-do this game)

4. Cyberpunk 2020 (played the bejeezus out of this one)

5. Vampire: The Masquerade (despite any current bitterness I display, I did have quite a lot of fun with that game)

Games I've played that I've loved a lot:

1. Spirit of the Century
2. Rules Cyclopedia D&D
3. Call of Cthulhu
4. The bizarre mixture of Rules Cyclopedia, 1ed and 2ed that I played as a kid in which most everything was ignored except class information, spell lists, weird magic items and monster stats and in which the DM had never read more than half of any DMG. It was exceedingly awesome.

1. Hunter: the Reckoning - as my longest running and most successful campaign, it's still on top.

2. Toon - absolutely one of my favorite RPGs ever. Still a perfect pick up and play game.

3. Vampire: the Requiem - also one of my longest running campaigns. This is the definitive horror game. WoD is almost a flawless ruleset.

4. Star Wars Saga Edition - D&D 4e should have been more like this and less like what it actually was. scratch built for to play Star Wars games, and it does it better than any other system.

5. Pathfinder - Pretty much replaced D&D 3.5 on this list, Still not perfect, but slightly improved continuation of the incredible D20 legacy.

6. TMNT&OS - My introduction to the Palladium system which proved  to me it ain't half bad. It then showed me how awesome and fun it truly was. Best character creation ever.

7. Traveller (Mongoose) - Second best character creation ever. The best GM section and probably the most complete game ever provided in a single book.

8. AD&D - The game that brought me in to the hobby over 20 years ago. I'm still here, and I play it every year in tribute to Gary and Dave. It's still just as fun as it ever was.

9. Unknown Armies - This game was written specifically for me, or at least it seems that way. This would absolutely be #1 on my list if I could find more people interested in playing my weirdo games.

10. Reign - Loved the system in the one game I played and I would love to play more.

Honorable Mentions - Two Fisted Tales, Low Life (Savage Worlds), Gurps 4e, BESM 3e : all these games and systems seem awesome I've just played them too little (or not at all in the case of Low Life) to be able to put them up on the list.

My obligatory filthy hippie answers in a rough kind of order:

Prime Time Adventures - the best! fan mail is awesome.
Burning Wheel/Empires - despite its baroque complexity it has so much that I like
The Grey Ranks - only playtested, but an amazing, intense game.
D&D 4e - for playing like 3e except fun.
Kagematsu - only played once at a convention, but hot damn! it was good!
Sorcerer
Dogs in the Vineyard
In A Wicked Age - if only for the Oracle and the We Owe list.
The Shadow of Yesterday
Artesia - only for the character generation rules.

The mechanics look interesting, but the whole focus on the cross-gender play for Kagematsu bugs me.  I'm not sure I dig the whole "social experiment" thing.

Me too!

1. Call of Cthulhu (and BRP in general)
2. Stormbringer/Hawkmoon
3. Gamma World (1st)
4. WFRP (1st cause I never played 2nd)
5. Traveller (classic or GURPS)
6. The Whispering Vault (I would put this higher but I don't get to play it enough).
7. Kult (though I've only played the setting using BRP rules)
8. Fading Suns/Rogue Trader/Dark Heresy (FS was our 40K RPG before DH).
9. GURPS
10. Noumenon (more like a strange dungeon setting but it has its own unique rules... which I like despite them being 'gimmicky')

This would seem top ten of games of all time, not just those that have come out recently. I'm not sure about the order:

1. Feng Shui, the ultimate pick up and play game.
2. All Flesh Must Be Eaten, for being a really good zombie game self contained and well done.
3. Golden Heroes, for being a really solid SHRPG and boxed and British (keep your Justice League, johnny foreigner!)
4. Star Wars RPG, the force was with it (d6 version).
5. Marvel Saga, for being different and readable though i've never played it (because i've lost the cards somehow).
6. Castle Falkenstein, for being original and atmospheric.
7. In Nomine, because it actually works really well and is also easy to get going despite all the critics who hated it's organisation and apparent brokenness.
8. Adventure! because Guy Davis does the art and it has some good ideas (though the dramatic framing rules or whatever they were called were painfully contrived).
9. WFRP 1e (the only edition i've ever played) for being a unique and atmospheric fantasy horror game.
10. Star Frontiers, because it's Star Frontiers.

In the totals, I would tweak one or two things.

BX/OD&D should be separated. They are as different as any other edition of the game.

I would group together all the B/X games, including: B/X, BECMI, Moldvay, Mentzer, RC although some might ar

Rolemaster 2 = Rolemaster = Rolemaster Classic. RMSS is moderately different.

Just a few suggestions, great work so far!

Not sure if I am too late, but here are my 'top ten' (with the caveat that the exact order will change on any given day).

1. OD&D/S&W
2. MERP
3. Call of Cthulhu [BRP]
4. Elric!/Stormbringer (5e) [BRP]
5. Basic/Expert D&D/LL
6. AD&D (1e)/OSRIC
7. MRQII/OpenQuest
8. Angel/Buffy (Cinematic Unisystem)
9. Rolemaster 2e/Rolemaster Classic
10. RQ2 (Chaosium)

In the spirit of Gunslinger's method three years ago...

Quote from: Gunslinger;70255Took the question as my top 10 games I would save from a fire to my bookshelves.  I haven't even played all of them but each system gives me something I admire.  An old school nostalgia mixed with a doe eyed wonderment of how other systems approached the hobby.

1. Dragon Warriors (Corgi Books edition)
2. Swords & Wizardry (Core Rules) *
3. dK (here I can't decide between dK System and dK2 - second edition is more refined but first was a better read)
4. Traveller (LBB, preferably the digest sized QLI reprint)
5. Lord of the Rings Adventure Game (the I.C.E. boxed game, not the Decipher version using the same name)
6. Dungeoneer - Advanced Fighting Fantasy
7. Sovereign Stone (Revised Ed) **
8. Dragonlance 5th Age (SAGA)
9. Big Eyes Small Mouth (2nd Ed) **
10. Tribe 8

* Three years ago this spot would have been taken by D&D Rules Cyclopedia or Red Box D&D
** I honestly think that Savage Worlds combines the best traits of both of these into an even better system - but I am irrational. Out of a burning bookshelf I'd rather save the raw, uncut gems.

If there was more time I'd try to save as well (aka, honorable mentions):
Darkurthe Legends
Barbarians of Lemuria
SimulacreS
(preferably Casus Belli HS 1)
Chroniques Oubliées (after almost a decade finally a version of 3.x I can stand, even like)
Myriad
Talislanta
(4th Ed)
Warhammer FRP (1st Ed hardcover, typos and all)
In Nomine
Midgard
(1st Ed) (or Abenteuer in Magira?)

And I have a hunch that Stone Horizons would at least make the honorable mentions list, if not kick another one from the Top 10 list. If it just was available!

I don't know the exact details/methodology of the scoring/tabulation, but the "OD&D/S&W" and "D&D3.x/Pathfinder" method of voting is the worst kind of cheating/stacking the the deck/Forge-styled viral marketing all wrapped up in one/several bullet point/s.

Take a stand and pick a game/ruleset.

I kind of thought they did. I just counted it as two votes. If 0D&D/S&W was the first choice, each game received 10 points...

People are talking about (and giving a plug for), their favorite games. Early on, they might have played 0D&D, and now play S&W, but that is their favorite incarnation of the game.

So it was voted. So it was counted.

Still haven't counted the last three or four entries, but will do that on Saturday sometime, and will breakout the BX D&D from the 0D&D, as well as tallying total counts for each game regardless of edition.

You'll see the D&D CoC, and AD&D easily carries the most points, but Warhammer, and the other games with multiple editions will move up the popularity chain a bit further, and GURPS and a few other games will also move up firmly into the top 20 list.

Oh waaah.  Sure, and let's count every of the 6 (7?) versions of Call of Cthulhu separately too.  And don't forget to break out separate printings of the games too, since they sometimes fix errata and stuff and even change cover art which as we all know is dreadfully important - D&D 2e thus has two versions based on printing.  Feng Shui had two versions, the Daedalus and Atlas ones (in fact, it had a color and B&W Daedalus versions, so that's 3 different games total!)

Oh wait, that's retarded, because they're basically the same game.

That's what these "forgey" (you forgot to add "socialist" in your random insult list) votes are trying to get across - there are many games that are the same game to within a standard deviation.  In some cases that's edition to edition (CoC, Feng Shui), in some cases it's most editions with specific exceptions (Paranoia, Runequest), and sometimes it's subsequent remakes (PF/3.5, OD&D/S&W), etc.

Since we're imputing motives to people (cheating, etc.) - I'm sure you know this, it's just that you figure whatever your beloved game is will rate higher if other games are fragmented down into smaller buckets.  Nice try.

The differences between Pathfinder and D&D3.5 are by an order of magnitude when compared to the differences between CoC 3 and CoC 6. PF and 3.5 are separate, if compatible, games; if they aren't then you should may as well have just voted d20 as your favorite game. Doubling up your votes is Forgey in the sense that it's viral marketing and advertising; it's not as subtle as the Forge tried to be, but its there. It seems like its never enough to simply to say you like Pathfinder on its own merits, but you have to make sure you have to associate it with the lineage it comes from.

Considering that I rated D&D4 as my top game, I have no doubt that even if people were to list games on their merits and not on their lineage and associations, 4e will still probably be the most hated and considered the worst game on this board. So no, I have no motive here except what anyone else's motive is here: to state an opinion in strong language....

Pathfinder and 3.5 - Hmm, I'd say those deserve to be different games.

AD&D/OSRIC
OD&D/S&W
BD&D/Labyrinth Lord

are pretty much the same games.  I mean there's a reason they call them retroCLONES. :)  You need to make those three categories though, not double up Original and Basic for example.

Basically. That's where IMO some license should be required, with an actual knowledge of the games in question. OD&D and S&W are basically the same game, no matter how you cut it. OD&D and AD&D are not. AD&D and 3rd Ed are not the same game. 3rd ed and 4E are not the same game.

AD&D and AD&D2 could be a point of contention, but for most people I know, these aren't the same games either (to me, they are not the same games).

Pathfinder and 3.5 are IMO the same game.

Moldvay/Cook, Mentzer and Rules Cyclopedia D&D could be assumed to be very close from each other, and thus the same game. Alternately, Holmes could be counted as part of AD&D, or in the same vein as the Moldvay/Mentzer/RC branch, depending on the point of view.

All versions of CoC Chaosium are more or less the same, but for a few fixes here and there. As for CoC Chaosium and CoC d20, say, these are two different games. And so on, so forth.

Let's not be retarded, here. If you don't know the games we're talking about, that's fine. But accusing people of viral marketing and such, *this* is definitely retarded.

This kind of underlines the trouble I had compiling the votes in the Bottom 10 games thread.

Part of the trouble is that, no matter how experienced a gamer you are, there's no way you're going to know the full details of which editions of which games were mere tweaks and which were major rehauls (like WFRP 3E) or serious fuckups (like Paranoia 5th... and WFRP 3E). So it's not exactly easy to make the call when you're dealing with games you don't know very well.

But your post was the fucking bomb. You ought to do the vote-counting for the polls from now on. ;)

I agree that it's sometimes a tough call whether to treat separate editions as separate games or the same game. The borderline is probably somewhere around seeing Stormbringer 1e-3e as the same game vs. seeing Chaosium RQ 2e and AH RQ 3e as different games.

Rpggeek (http://rpg.geekdo.com) has made a pretty good attempt at judging these sorts of cases, though, so they could be used as a guide now and/or in the future. Conceptually they have "families" of games, and then "RPGs". They also sometimes have a category of "system". So e.g. Chaosium's Stormbringer games are a "family" that uses the "BRP System" (as do some other  families and/or RPGs such as CoC), but the actual "RPGs" within the SB family are broken down into SB 1e-3e, SB 4e, Elric!, and SB 5e.

IMO this is slightly erroneous, as Elric and SB 5e are really the same, and I just submitted a correction to reflect this. Nevertheless the mappings over there are the first attempt I've seen to regularize the categorization of editions as minor edits vs. wholesale revisions.

Heh, thanks, but if I did I might make people cry.  And no one wants that.

Yeah, it is a difficult problem.   In general we're willing to be more picky the more familiar we are, and since most of us are familiar with D&D, we all "know they're all different."  But some amount of genericity is important.  When we talk about our favorite "game" as opposed to a more picky "what single gaming *product*", we have to find a level of generalization that makes sense to both aficionados and non-aficionados.

I think the simple way is just for everyone to step back and try to let the prima donna-ness slip away, and say "really, are these 90% or more the exact same?"  D&D 3.0 and 3.5 are 95% the exact same game.  D&D 3.5 and Pathfinder, same deal.  Of course people don't put out a new version (clones excepted) unless they say it's all better and changed sufficiently for you to toss out $50 for it (except for CoC, which just puts out new versions for kicks, apparently).  But in many cases, to an untutored outsider, they're pretty much the same.  Sure, one may be slightly better, but it's under the same rubric.  It's like "which of the 20 Lord of the Rings boxed sets should I get" - there's differences but to an outsider it's "Lord of the Rings."  (Or even better, anime series, where you can fret over sub vs dub and stuff like that.  You are still a big femme for watching Sailor Moon, even if it's in Japanese and sailors Uranus and Vajayjay are lovers.)

So most games are just "the game," with the occasional example of someone who drastically changed direction with a version.  I think that the aficionados voting usually identify these for you, though.  "I love Paranoia except for that 5th edition crap!"

D&D is a special case in that most of the time it drastically changes with every major version.  I mean, it's still about orc genocide each time, but a 2e character and a 3e character aren't much more similar to each other than to a character from any of the 30 other games out there that basically use STR/DEX/CON/etc.  And the core mechanics change each time (tables vs thac0 vs bab vs monopoly).  Though really at some level the answer really might should be "D&D" or "other," as to someone who hasn't played D&D it's all rolling d20s and hooting like monkeys regardless of version.  (Or maybe two options - "I always play the current version of D&D because I lack critical thinking skills" and "I play an older version of D&D because I am a curmudgeon who is trying to recapture my lost youth  instead of meeting girls."  Discuss!)

Of course it also comes down to how much you value the rules vs the setting.  Are all BRP games the same (exact same rules) or are they all different (different usually-licensed properties?)   In other words, my favorite game system or my favorite "line"?

I mean, I do sympathize with Pete, in that for myself as well there are games I find more interchangeable and games that, though technically very similar, were somehow a dealbreaker to me.  Like Spycraft 1.0 to 2.0 - I don't really want to claim they are different games, but personally I loved the heck out of 1.0 and didn't like 2.0.  But I can step back and say "you know, from a high level POV, let's just say I like Spycraft and be done with it."  Because liking games is like anything else.  If we did a list of "women you love," I reckon I'd put on it both "Michelle from ninth grade" and "every tattooed girl with daddy issues who needs me to turn her crank."  Some are very specific things and others are interchangeable sets.

One suggestion...

You should have an OD&D(any) category that combines
OD&D 80 9
Swords and Wizardry 76 9

that would make OD&D (any) 156 18 or 5th on the list.

Seems like if you let the 'best' and 'worst' lists cancel each other out then D&D sinks while Traveller and Call Of Cthulhu rise to the top... where they rightfully belong.

Also, some of the Runequests might be put together. I notice there's a general category for RQ, and then a couple of separate entries for various versions.

The mechanics look interesting, but the whole focus on the cross-gender play for Kagematsu bugs me.  I'm not sure I dig the whole "social experiment" thing.

Yeah, I was kind of hesitant about it going in for exactly this reason, but the gender issue almost immediately revealed itself to be a non-issue and it was just a great game.

Hm, maybe non-issue isn't exactly the right way to describe it, but it wasn't something that hindered play or made it uncomfortable.

Did anyone vote for both of them in their list? If so, that'd be letting those people double-vote.

There aren't. I just checked. You will find most votes are for "OD&D/Swords & Wizardry", "Swords & Wizardry" (either Core Rules or White Box or without mention), or, interestingly enough, some people who voted for a "Basic/Classic D&D" section dumping OD&D and/or Swords & Wizardry, Holmes, Moldvay, Mentzer, Rules Cyclopedia in the same broad vote. Interesting.

That's #14 on the points list and #12 on the votes/mentions list. All of the RQ put together.

If we put all the D&D together, then Stormbringer, Pathfinder, Gamma World, BRP, & Marvel Superheroes also make the top 20.

Quote from: mxyzplk;371680D&D is a special case in that most of the time it drastically changes with every major version.

Depends on what you want to call a major version, I guess.  I don't think I would have any problems running a game where one player used OD&D, another player used Basic/Expert, a third player ran an AD&D 1st edition character, the forth used BECMI and the fifth used 2nd edition AD&D.  My Bandit Kingdoms campaign featured an Unearthed Arcana cavalier and a 2nd edition bard as the two longest running PCs.  Usually no one could really tell when I was using the 1st edition version of a magic item or monster as opposed to the 2nd edition version.

If your point was that all the editions that TSR did were drastically different from the two and a half editions WotC has produced so far, then I suppose I agree.

Quote from: jrients;371983Depends on what you want to call a major version, I guess.  I don't think I would have any problems running a game where one player used OD&D, another player used Basic/Expert, a third player ran an AD&D 1st edition character, the forth used BECMI and the fifth used 2nd edition AD&D.

I've done that with no real problems. I can use adventures for any of the TSR editions with any other TSR edition (or a clone) and do what little conversion is needed on the fly as well.  There wasn't nearly as much difference between any of the TSR editions of D&D as there are between any TSR edition and either of the WOTC editions.

When AD&D came out, I incorporated the books into my ongoing game as they were released - first the Monster Manual, then the PHB, then the DMG, IIRC. Same with second edition AD&D. Phased in as we went along.

That's what my group did, only we left out all the parts of AD&D we didn't like. Our D&D was OD&D plus what we liked from AD&D, Arduin, etc. The AD&D books became the primary reference once all three were finally out, but what we played wasn't anything like RAW.

Same here. I was stripping out rules and making house rules before I ever played or ran the game. Then again I was a long time war gamer, and that's how we did it back then. :D
